3 Dear Friends, NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Say an extra prayer or two for the artisans who have been laboring to fix the falling plaster high up in the church during these very hot days. The assessment and work continue! Please remember that this Wednesday, August 15, is the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary. We will have Masses in DiGiovanni Hall at 8:00am, 12:10pm and 7:00pm. There is no Vigil Mass. Celebrating this Mass is a beautiful way to punctuate the week and the day with special attention to Our Blessed Mother. We look forward to seeing you, but if you cannot make it to Mass here, be sure to go at a more convenient location! HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARIO VALDES! Thank you for all you do for the parish! I am grateful to parishioner Mr. Charles Beisch, who has made the very generous donation of a Polish woodcut print of the Crucifixion from the 19 th century (in the 16 th century style). It is now located on the second floor hallway between the Conference Room and the Reading Room. It is a great location as it fills the space nicely and also protects it from direct sunlight. Please be sure to take a look and to thank Charles for his gift to the parish. Later this week I will be making a final decision about a Director for the Confirmation program, which has two branches: the High School program and the College/Adult Program. Once that decision is made, information about the coming year will be made available. I m happy to report that plans for next years RCIA and Faith Formation for grades K-8 are well underway. More to come soon. Next week we will also be interviewing applicants for the position of Assistant Director of Music. This is a pivotal role for the entire parish music program, and especially for the Choir School and the Adult Choir. Those involved in the interview process will include representative members of all constituencies. A reminder about the lecture being offered by noted Biblical Scholar Scott Hahn on Friday, September 13. If you would be interested and able to help with any aspect of the evening, please contact the office or Parish Council member Martin Etcheverry. We have a number of August weddings this year. Please pray for all these couples and for all those preparing to be married here at St. Paul s. Keep cool! God bless, Fr. Kelly PARISH SUPPORT AND FINANCES Our offertory this weekend, August 11/12 has one collection, our regular parish offertory. Thank you for your generosity. 4 CHECK OUT WHAT S HAPPENING AT ST. PAUL S PARISH MOVIE NIGHT! Come one, come all! The Saint Paul Parish movie group will be screening 'A Man for All Seasons' in the Multimedia Room on Monday, August 20, at 7:00pm. This 1966 film, starring Paul Scofield, Robert Shaw and Vanessa Redgrave, documents the events around the martyrdom of Saint Thomas More by King Henry the Eighth for his refusal to support Henry's demand of an annulment from his wife Catherine of Aragon. This classic was nominated for eight Academy Awards; it won six. Contact Edward Miller at (857) with any questions. FOOD PANTRY With many parishioners enjoying vacations over the summer, donations to the food pantry have been somewhat variable. We especially need white rice (2 lb. bags), granola bars or cereal bars, cold cereal, canisters of oats, jelly or jam, complete pancake mix, juice (64 oz. bottles), crackers, nuts, flavored tea, and coffee. One of the wonderful things about the food pantry is the diverse group that we serve. Regular guests range from graduate students and postdocs from South America trying to support their young families to older Chinese residents who come with their requests written in both English and Chinese. Although we are not assisting the neediest members of the community, it is like preventative medicine. We offer a dignified way for people to stay afloat so they don't become the poorest of the poor. MASS INTENTIONS AT ST. PAUL S Mass Intentions for daily and weekend Masses are being accepted. Masses may be offered to remember those who have died, for those who are ill, as well as in thanksgiving for a birthday, anniversary or for a special intention. Please contact the Parish Office, (617) for details and to reserve a particular Mass. SANCTUARY LAMP The Sanctuary Lamp, which burns for eight days and nights at the tabernacle, symbolizes the presence of Christ and marks the boundaries of holy space in the Church. If you are interested in learning how to donate a Sanctuary Lamp, contact Nancy at (617) ext MONDAY PRAYER GROUP Join fellow parishioners for scripture study and prayer, following the 12:10pm Mass, on Monday s in Mary s Room (Room 202). AUGUST 12, 2018 K-8 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Attention St. Paul s families: This coming fall the religious education program is moving to Sunday mornings following the 9:30am Mass. Registration will be at 10:30am on Sunday, September 9, and first classes will begin Sunday, September 15. Stay tuned for more details. If you have question in the meantime, contact Catherine Barilleaux (catherinebarilleaux@gmail.com). MAKE AN INTRODUCTION & CHANGE A LIFE Alumni (including our pastor, Father Kelly!) from every era of Saint Paul s Choir School have described how the school positively transformed their life s trajectory. Might you know a family with a boy in grade 2 through 7 that you could introduce to us? We are seeking boys who love to sing, and parents who would like a rigorous academic and Catholic education for their son, who may be exploring the benefits of an all -boys school environment, who may be attracted by the school s location in Harvard Square, who may desire that their son attend an elite high school eventually, and who may have mentioned that their son s current school isn t challenging enough or an ideal fit. To make an introduction, please c o n t a c t D i a n n e F l a h e r t y (admissions@saintpaulschoirschool.us). We appreciate every introduction - thank you! SUMMER CHAPEL AT ST. PAUL S The Summer Chapel is open in the air conditioned DiGiovanni Hall through Friday, August 31. All weekday and weekend Masses will be celebrated in DiGiovanni Hall except the Sunday 9:30am and 11:00am. PASTORAL CARE St. Paul s ministry to those who are sick and homebound has grown into a vibrant part of our parish community. There are three ways your help is needed. First, please consider volunteering to visit those who are sick and homebound. Second, if you, or anyone you know, is in need of a visit, please contact us. Third, please include this important ministry in your prayers, as well as our friends who are sick and homebound. For more info contact Carolyn O Hara at StPaulsCaring@gmail.com or (617) , ext CENTERING PRAYER The Centering prayer group meets on Thursdays from 6:30-8pm in Room 202. Our meetings include lectio divina or readings from Fr. Keating or the Christian mystics, followed by a period of centering prayer. We are currently reading A Sunlit Absence by Martin Laird. Readings are provided. All are welcome. For more information, please contact Susan or Janice (stpaulcentering@gmail.com).

It's an uncomfortable feeling to catch people murmuring about what you did, said, or didn't do. It breeds division and exclusion. In today's Gospel, Jesus invites us to just the opposite. The reading opens with the crowds "murmuring" their doubts about Jesus after he has proclaimed himself the Bread of Life. "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? how can he say 'I have come down from heaven'?" In his response, Jesus brings up the Israelites and the manna God brought them in the desert. If you turn back to the story in Exodus, you'll see another similar word: murmuring. As the going got tough, the Israelites doubted Moses and God's plan to protect and care for them as a chosen people. Here, Jesus proposes a difficult theological concept. Jesus himself is "the living bread" and "flesh for the life of the world." GRADUATE STUDENTS FILM NIGHT Friday, August 31 at 7:00pm Pather Panchali -Satyajit Ray (Bengal, India 1955 Refreshments (including popcorn) served! hccfilmnight@gmail.com GRAD PRAYER AND SCRIPTURE GROUP: VERBUM DEI Every Sunday at 12:30pm (after 11:00am Mass) Grad students & young professionals gather each Sunday to read and reflect on the Sunday readings. alex.angstrom@gmail.com This is not an exclusive concept. "Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me." Why? Because "the Father who sent me draw[s] him." The next time you're at Mass, take a few moments to watch the communion line. Young and old, families and singles, diverse races and cultures and stories? we are all drawn to the Eucharistic table. Catholic doctrine may require faith, but it is a faith possible for anyone who seeks truth. Christianity does not hide behind locked doors in an exclusive clubhouse, whispering behind the backs of nonbelievers. Jesus compels us to share the love of God the Father for his children, that we one day be joined with Him and "live forever.
