3 Dear Friends, TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The weather has been of biblical proportions at some moments this week! I hope that you have not been overly burdened by the rain and heat. Every three to five years, the Archdiocese initiates an audit of every parish. We have begun this process this past week. It is always an eye opener for our auditors to see the complexity of our operations here! My meetings have gone well and they will be finishing up their work soon. I am grateful to our Director of Finance and Operations, Mr. Tom Hogan. He not only oversees the financial life of the parish, Harvard Catholic Center and the Choir School, but also directs all the care of the physical plant (think, this week: fire alarm testing, school painting, malfunctioning AC systems, and plaster repair in the church, to name but four items). When the results of the audits are available, we will fill you in on the commendations and recommendations. A reminder about the lecture being offered by noted Biblical Scholar Scott Hahn on Friday, September 14. If you would be interested, and able, to help with any aspect of the evening, please contact the office or Parish Council member Martin Etcheverry. We had our interviews for the position of Assistant Music Director this past week. I am grateful to those who helped with the process and will let you know the final decisions when they are made. We are blessed to have many guests at St. Paul s rectory. We are very happy to welcome Fr. Matthew Lambert, OSB. He is a monk of St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, PA. I have friends in that community and have given a retreat and made my own personal retreats at their seminary. Fr. Matthew is doing biblical studies in Rome but is staying with us until late September for some research in area libraries. You may see him at various Masses and around campus. Keep up the prayers for the artisans working on the plaster in the church during these hot days. So far, the cost of repairs and scaffolding is about $65,000. We still have a way to go as new areas of decay are discovered. We will have conversations soon about how we will approach these unanticipated costs. Please pray for Bernard Burke whose funeral Mass was celebrated last week. Please keep Bernard and his family and friends in your prayers. PARISH SUPPORT AND FINANCES Our offertory this weekend, August 18/19 has one collection, our regular parish offertory. Thank you for your generosity. As always, thank you to past and present benefactors. SECUREGIVE APP INSTRUCTIONS The SecureGive App is available for use for your regular offertory contribution! Please follow these easy instructions: Go to App Store (or other name if on different phones) Type or go to SecureGive App Click on Install or Download Click on Accept Click on Open Screen with nearby Organizations will come up Click on St. Paul Parish Cambridge Click on Set Organization Home Details Click on Make Donation At this point you can decide to create an account for a onetime donation or for continuous giving or for a onetime anonymous donation. PARISH MOVIE NIGHT! Come one, come all! The Saint Paul Parish movie group will be screening 'A Man for All Seasons' in the Multimedia Room on Monday, August 20, at 7:00pm. This 1966 film, starring Paul Scofield, Robert Shaw and Vanessa Redgrave, documents the events around the martyrdom of Saint Thomas More by King Henry the Eighth for his refusal to support Henry's demand of an annulment from his wife Catherine of Aragon. This classic was nominated for eight Academy Awards; it won six. Contact Edward Miller at phileib@yahoo.com with any questions. God bless, Fr. Kelly

4 THE NINETEENTH OF AUGUST, TWO THOUSAND EIGHTEEN CHECK OUT WHAT S HAPPENING AT ST. PAUL S FOOD PANTRY With many parishioners enjoying vacations over the summer, donations to the food pantry have been somewhat variable. We especially need white rice (2 lb. bags), granola bars or cereal bars, cold cereal, canisters of oats, jelly or jam, complete pancake mix, juice (64 oz. bottles), crackers, nuts, flavored tea, and coffee. One of the wonderful things about the food pantry is the diverse group that we serve. Regular guests range from graduate students and postdocs from South America trying to support their young families to older Chinese residents who come with their requests written in both English and Chinese. Although we are not assisting the neediest members of the community, it is like preventative medicine. We offer a dignified way for people to stay afloat so they don't become the poorest of the poor. K-8 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Attention St. Paul s families: This coming fall the religious education program is moving to Sunday mornings following the 9:30am Mass. Registration will be at 10:30am on Sunday, September 9, and first classes will begin Sunday, September 15. Stay tuned for more details. If you have question in the meantime, contact Catherine Barilleaux (catherinebarilleaux@gmail.com). SUMMER CHAPEL AT ST. PAUL S The Summer Chapel is open in the air conditioned DiGiovanni Hall through Friday, August 31. All weekday and weekend Masses will be celebrated in DiGiovanni Hall except the Sunday 9:30am and 11:00am. MASS INTENTIONS AT ST. PAUL S Mass Intentions for daily and weekend Masses are being accepted. Masses may be offered to remember those who have died, for those who are ill, as well as in thanksgiving for a birthday, anniversary or for a special intention. Please contact the Parish Office, (617) for details and to reserve a particular Mass. SANCTUARY LAMP The Sanctuary Lamp, which burns for eight days and nights at the tabernacle, symbolizes the presence of Christ and marks the boundaries of holy space in the Church. If you are interested in learning how to donate a Sanctuary Lamp, contact Nancy at (617) ext MAKE AN INTRODUCTION & CHANGE A LIFE Alumni (including our pastor, Father Kelly!) from every era of Saint Paul s Choir School have described how the school positively transformed their life s trajectory. Might you know a family with a boy in grade 2 through 7 that you could introduce to us? We are seeking boys who love to sing, and parents who would like a rigorous academic and Catholic education for their son, who may be exploring the benefits of an all-boys school environment, who may be attracted by the school s location in Harvard Square, who may desire that their son attend an elite high school eventually, and who may have mentioned that their son s current school isn t challenging enough or an ideal fit. To make an introduction, please contact Dianne Flaherty (admissions@saintpaulschoirschool.us). We appreciate every introduction - thank you! PASTORAL CARE St. Paul s ministry to those who are sick and homebound has grown into a vibrant part of our parish community. There are three ways your help is needed. First, please consider volunteering to visit those who are sick and homebound. Second, if you, or anyone you know, is in need of a visit, please contact us. Third, please include this important ministry in your prayers, as well as our friends who are sick and homebound. For more info contact Carolyn O Hara at StPaulsCaring@gmail.com or (617) , ext CENTERING PRAYER The Centering prayer group meets on Thursdays from 6:30-8pm in Room 202. Our meetings include lectio divina or readings from Fr. Keating or the Christian mystics, followed by a period of centering prayer. We are currently reading A Sunlit Absence by Martin Laird. Readings are provided. All are welcome. For more information, please contact Susan or Janice (stpaulcentering@gmail.com). CARING FOR THE SOUL Caring for the Soul meets on the first Monday of the month at 5:30pm in Mary s Room (Room 202). Caring for the Soul supports those whose lives have been affected by mental illness, and is working to make our religious communities places of compassion, healing and acceptance. All are welcome. Group leader is Dr. Nancy Kehoe, RSCI.

These are words that can be heard on the lips of anyone struggling with faith. Perhaps, they are heard on yours. Physical tests will reveal no difference. The difference is seen through faith. In one sense, it is simple. Either we believe that the risen Christ is present -- soul and divinity -- or we do not. The fruits of faith are the proof. In the Eucharist, God enters into the very depths of who we are. However, it is our choice whether we ignore what He does or act fully upon it. The Eucharist can change us. When people see that we are different, they in turn will themselves believe.
