3 Dear Friends, FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME I hope that you have been able to enjoy a quieter pace these days. A few extra minutes reading a book or taking a walk or lingering over a cup of coffee without rushing to the next thing can be quite restorative. We also can manage more time for prayer. Take advantage! I d like to give an update about the Faith Formation program here at St. Paul s. I am very pleased to announce that Catherine Barilleaux has accepted the position of Faith Formation Director for grades K-8. Catherine is an active member of the parish and has been involved as a well respected teacher in the program for the past several years. She will be in touch with families and parishioners soon about schedules, registration, and opportunities for volunteers. I am also grateful to a new team that has been formed to lead our very important RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program. As the primary process for welcoming folks into full communion with the Catholic Church, this is a significant ministry in our parish. Under the leadership of Mareike Bues, with a group of committed parishioners and the three priests here, we look forward to an exciting and engaging year. Finally, we are in the midst of searching for a director of the Confirmation Program, which serves both our High School students and, in a different track, those adults who seek to receive this sacrament. With several interviews scheduled, we are still happy to receive inquiries from potential candidates. Thanks to Catherine, Mareike, and all those assisting in this crucial work of evangelization and catechesis. New Head of School Dr. Tom Haferd is hard at it! The Choir School has hired two new teachers and we continue to interview students from grades 3-8 who might join us in the fall. There are parish events in the works, as well, with final details being worked out before things are announced. I want again to welcome our summer parishioners who are joining us at St. Paul s for a week, a month, or longer. We are so blessed to have people from all over the world who become important members of our community. Your experience of faith and the church from throughout the globe enrich our experience of God. If there is anything anyone here can do for you, please let us know! Fr. Patrick s invitation to students to come on Monday nights for prayer and as a social has met with great success. We are also grateful for those parishioners who come for Eucharistic Adoration on Friday mornings in the Chapel of the Women Doctors of the church. Also, the new stained glass window of St. Paul has been installed in the chapel. Come by and see it. We are thrilled! This week, we began putting up the scaffolding in the church to address the first phase of plaster repair. The main areas are in the choir loft and along several sections of the walls. As I ve mentioned in earlier letters, the cost of the scaffolding alone is over $20,000, not including the actual repair work. It is not just a matter of re-plastering flat walls, but also re-creating the decorative molding and Stations of the Cross that have suffered damage. I will keep you posted about progress, costs and next steps. Remember that all weekday and Sunday Masses are in DiGiovanni Hall throughout the summer, with the exception of Sunday at 9:30am and 11:00am. God bless, Fr. Kelly SECUREGIVE APP INSTRUCTIONS The SecureGive App is available for use for your regular offertory contribution! Calendar listings and more information can be found on our new website: GOSPEL MEDITATION July 15, 2018 "He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two." This Sunday we read the first sending of the Apostles to preach, teach, and heal. For many of us, it can be easy to think we "just don't have enough" to be disciples and evangelists ourselves. We don't have enough education and training. We don't have enough experience talking to people about Jesus. We don't pray enough. We don't have enough faith. If you look at the Apostles in today's Gospel reading, they didn't have much either. "No food, no sack, no money in their belts." They didn't plan out their itinerary or book their lodging in advance. From what we know of the Apostles, they were not the religiously trained and educated ones. They were fisherman, tax collectors, and political activists. But what does being a fisherman require? Someone like Peter needed a strong work ethic to rise at strange hours. He needed patient calm to wait for the catch. Once ashore, he needed a savvy mind to fetch a good price for his labors. As Peter became a fisher of men, he would need diligence to persevere through the hard journeys, long days, and persecution that awaited him. He would need patient calm with those who disagreed with him. As the leader of the Apostles, he would need a savvy mind to navigate challenges facing the early Church. From one perspective, Peter has nothing to offer the mission of Jesus. Thinking more creatively, one can see that -- joined with faith and love -- perhaps Peter had everything he needed. Jesus sends you as well. As you take stock of your own talents, consider how they might be offered as a gift to others. Maybe you already have more than enough. HAPPY SUMMER!
