Those who are facing surgeries or very serious health issues can see the priest after the Mass. The Anointing will take place near the Statue of Mary at the front left of the Church. The oils are reserved in the Olea Sancta Repository (Holy Oils) near the Baptismal Font. Family and friends are most welcome to be present together during the Anointing. SUMMER CHAPEL AT ST. PAUL S The Summer Chapel is open in the air conditioned DiGiovanni Hall through August 31. All Masses will be celebrated in DiGiovanni Hall, Sunday 9:30am and 11:00am Masses will be celebrated in the Church. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA) The parish is always ready to receive adults into the process of preparation for baptism or reception into Full Communion with the Roman Catholic Church. Please call (617) for information. PARISH FOOD PANTRY Non-perishable food is received before every Mass for the pantry, which is open Saturdays from 11:00am to 11:30am., or may be left in the parish office. CHURCH ACCESS FOR THE DISABLED Take elevator from the Parish Center Lobby at 29 Mount Auburn Street. Restrooms, handicapped accessible, are located on 1 st & 2 nd floors of the Parish Center. PARKING FOR MASS ON SATURDAY & SUNDAY Free parking at the Cowperthwaite Garage is available by permit only for those attending Mass on weekends only. 3 Dear Friends, THE FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME I hope everyone enjoyed their Fourth of July. For those of us at Mass here, we were treated to a very fine homily by Fr. Murphy on the importance of religious liberty for the health of our nation. Keep alert and prayerful for this important cornerstone of our lives. We priests joined with the priests of St. Mary s in Cambridge for a cookout, which was a fine time. You may have seen the article in the Boston Globe regarding Catholic parishes and the initiatives that have been undertaken regarding care for the environment. Though St. Paul s was contacted for the piece, I m afraid our achievements ended up on the cutting room floor! That is a shame! Just to update you: since Pope Francis published his encyclical on the environment (Laudato Si), there has been lots of activity here. Under the initiative of the current President of the Harvard Catholic Student Association, Catherine Culbertson, an active committee comprised of students and parishioners has been hard at work. Building on earlier initiatives, our facilities (Church, Parish Center and Choir School) are now 80% LED lighting. We have increased the number of recycling bins (with more to come). Our new, energy efficient church boiler had a good first season, and our broken washing machine and dish washer have been replaced by green certified appliances. We are also well ahead of the curve in investigating the future possibility of solar panels powering the Church, Parish Center and Choir School. Our celebration of Earth Day was not as robust as we had originally intended due to conflicting schedules, but it was noted in the Prayers of the Faithful and hymns of the day. Finally, the Committee is looking into ongoing education opportunities (seminars, lectures) for the parish. Thanks to all who are doing so much. Please keep the many initiatives being worked on in your prayers. Watch the website and bulletin for updates. I will be away for the last two weeks of July for vacation with family and friends. All of us at St. Paul s hope that you have a restful and enjoyable summer season! As you head off from Harvard Square, please remember St. Paul s. Although more relaxed, the good work of proclaiming Jesus Christ very much continues here the sacraments are celebrated, outreach continues, visitors are welcomed and yes, the regular expenses continue. Your weekly offertory contribution is of great help during the summer while you are away you can set a recurring gift through our on-line giving portal on the parish web site or by using the Giving Kiosk in the vestibule of the church. Thank you for remembering St. Paul s while you are away! PASTORAL CARE St. Paul Parish has expanded its ministry to those who are sick and homebound. There are three ways your help is needed. First, please consider volunteering to visit those who are sick and homebound. Second, if you, or anyone you know, is in need of a visit, please contact us. Third, please include this important ministry in your prayers, as well as our friends who are sick and homebound. PAUL CLIMATE JUSTICE INITIATIVE The St. Paul Climate Committee is focused on the issue of climate justice, answering our Holy Father s call in Laudato Si. We will provide a community of support and accountability for those desiring to take action in their own lives to reduce their carbon footprint, and to advocate & spread awareness for our cause in our parish community and beyond. 4 CHECK OUT WHAT S HAPPENING AT ST. PAUL S MASS INTENTIONS AT ST. PAUL S Mass Intentions for daily and weekend Masses are being accepted. Masses may be offered to remember those who have died, for those who are ill, as well as in thanksgiving for a birthday, anniversary or for a special intention. Please contact the Parish Office during the week for details and to reserve a particular Mass. FOOD PANTRY With Fair Foods closed for vacation, we were prepared to give out canned green beans and pasta instead of fresh produce on July 8. Instead, or rather in addition, we had blueberries, eggplant, corn, tomatoes, onions, and potatoes, thanks to the generosity of three vendors at Haymarket and one of our volunteers who was able to coordinate the donation. Our current needs include shelf-stable milk (both dairy and soy or almond milk), dried fruit, fruit cups, nuts, crackers, pasta sauce, juice, jam or jelly (other than grape), decaffeinated coffee, and granola bars or cereal bars. We are also looking for another volunteer to do bread pickups approximately once per month at Hi- Rise Bread Company. This role entails going to the bakery on Friday evening just before they close and bringing the bread to the church on Saturday morning. Your car will be blessed with the aromas of fresh bread. ST. PAUL S GIVING KIOSK The St. Paul Giving Kiosk - located in the vestibule! The device offers parishioners, and visitors, a means by which to make offertory donations via credit card. All donations made through the kiosk are credited to parishioner accounts. Check it out today! SANCTUARY LAMP The Sanctuary Lamp, which burns for eight days and nights at the tabernacle, symbolizes the presence of Christ and marks the boundaries of holy space in the Church. If you are interested in learning how to donate a Sanctuary Lamp, contact Nancy at (617) ext MONDAY PRAYER GROUP Join fellow parishioners for scripture study and prayer, following the 12:10pm Mass, on Monday s in the Mary Room. JULY 16, TH & 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERARY MASS This year's Golden and Silver Wedding Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday, November 19 at 3:00pm at Holy Name Parish, 1689 Centre Street, West Roxbury. Cardinal Seán O'Malley, O.F.M. Cap. invites all couples of the Archdiocese of Boston who are marking their 25th and 50th wedding anniversary to join him for the annual celebration. Please contact Emily Elliott at eelliott@rcab.org, or (617) for more information. Mass will include a renewal of marriage vows by all participating anniversary couples. Family members and friends of the participating couples, as well as the general public, are welcome to attend. Family and friends do not need to register, only anniversary couples. A formal invitation (including general information and directions) will be mailed to the home of the anniversary couple. LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR The Little Sisters of the Poor will be hosting a Rummage Sale at the Little Sisters of the Poor, Jeanne Jugan Residence, 186 Highland Avenue in Somerville. The sale will take place on Saturday, July 14 and 15 from 9:00am 4:00pm. Books, furniture, household items, clothes and seasonal items will be available. LIVE THE LITURGY INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK We are reminded today that the seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest. What kind of soil do we have? God's word needs to take root in our lives so that we can remain faithful not only when life is easy but when it gets challenging and difficult. Anxiety, worldly cares and concerns, personal challenges, experiences of loss and death, and even fear and disappointment can prevent us from trusting God's promise. We can even find ourselves doubting God's fidelity and lose touch with his presence. Our soil can easily become rocky, hard, and unyielding. Open your eyes and ears today and let all that is around you lead you to God's presence. Then, do all in your power to cultivate and nurture a life that is eager to receive him and fertile for growing the seeds of God's kingdom.
