Evening prayers will be prayed at 5:30 PM. Sign up sheets at the side entrance of the church. SEDER MEAL- On Wednesday, April 12 th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM we will be hosting our traditional Passover Meal. It will include scripture and music, the ceremonial plate and a complete chicken dinner. We are cooking here at the church and would love to have some assistance with cooking, setup and clean up. Reservations must be made by April 7th. Please call Elaine Arvidson at to reserve a spot or to volunteer. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Elaine Arvidson and Marie Altenau are looking for one or two volunteers to shadow them at this year s Seder Meal. After many years of co-chairing this celebration, they are seeking someone to replace them. In-Pew Commitment Weekend will take this weekend, March 18/19th. STATIONS OF THE CROSS- Will take place here at St. John s every Friday evening during Lent at 7:00 PM. HISPANIC MASS A Spanish-language Holy Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary s Chapel on Sunday, March 19th at 10 AM. All are invited to celebrate this Holy Mass with our Hispanic brothers and sisters. Light refreshments will follow. LITURGY MEETING-There will be a special Liturgy Meeting on March 19th after the 10:30 AM Holy Mass. RECONCILIATION MONDAY Confessions will be heard on April 10th from 3 to 9 PM. COMEDY NIGHT St. John s will be having a Comedy Night (two professional comedians provided by Mike Speirs) on April 29th at 8:30 PM at the Saugerties Knights of Columbus. Tickets will also go on sale after all Holy Masses beginning the weekend of March 25th & 26th. THE JACK ROSE MEMORIAL BEATITUDE SCHOLARSHIP- If you are graduating from High School, plan to further your education and are a member of St. John s Parish, you can apply for Mrs. Renner s 4 th Grade Religious Education Class Beatitude Scholarship. Scholarship applications are available at either the church or rectory office. All applications must be returned by April 1 st. Also, continue to drop your loose change in the containers at the doors of the church. Our class appreciates your support in this project. GOLDEN ANNIVERSARIES- Couples celebrating their 50 th Wedding Anniversary during 2017 are invited to attend the Golden Wedding Jubilee Mass with Cardinal Dolan at the Cathedral of St. Patrick on June 11th at 2 PM. Pre-registration is required. Register by May 12th. Our parish will be honoring all who will be celebrating 25 or 50 years of marriage during 2017 at a special Mass in June. 3 THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT My Dearest Sisters and Brothers in the Transfigured Lord Jesus, The Advisory Committee for Parish Development is also sponsoring the upcoming Comedy Night on Saturday, April 29 th, at 8:30 P.M. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in the Village of Saugerties. Tickets will start to go on sale during the weekend of March 25 th and 26 th. It should be another fun/fund raiser. Stations of the Cross continue to be on the Fridays of Lent as Deacon Bob and I will alternate Fridays; it starts at 7 P.M. For the sixth year in a row, we are the first parish of the sixteen parishes in Ulster County Deanery to surpass our parish goal for the Cardinal s Appeal. Furthermore, we were the second parish of the 294 parishes in the Archdiocese of New York to do that. At the end of Holy Masses this weekend, I will give you the updated figures. The great news about going over the goal is that 60% of the monies paid that exceed the goal will be rebated to our parish as part of next year s budgeted income. NEXT WEEKEND, MARCH 18 th AND 19 th, AT ALL THREE OF OUR WEEKEND HOLY MASSES, WE WILL HAVE THE ANNUAL IN-PEW PORTION OF THE CARDINAL S APPEAL FOR THIS YEAR. Cardinal s Appeal envelopes and pencils will be in the pews and on the seats for your TEEN RETREAT Will take place at Holy Trinity in Poughkeepsie from March 31st to April 2nd. Many dynamic speakers. Then we realized that the lights were the reflections off all the eye-glasses in the audience.

5 MARCH 19, 2017 WANNA BORROW A JACK? One day I went to a lawyer friend for advice. "I'm in real trouble" I said. "My neighbors across the road are going on vacation for a month; and instead of boarding their dogs they are going to keep them locked up and a woman is coming to feed them, if she doesn't forget. Meanwhile they'll be lonely and bark all day and howl all night, and I won't be able to sleep. I'll either have to call the SPCA to haul them away or I'll go berserk and go over there and shoot them and then when my neighbors return, they'll go berserk and come over and shoot me. My lawyer patted back a delicate yawn. "Let me tell you a story," he said. "And don't stop me if you've heard it before." "A fellow was speeding down a country road late at night and BANG! Went a tire. He got out and looked but he had no jack. "Then he said to himself. 'Well, I'll just walk to the nearest farmhouse and borrow a jack.' He saw a light in the distance and said, 'Well, I'm in luck; the farmer's up. I'll just knock on the door and say I'm in trouble, would you please lend me a jack? And he'll say, why sure, neighbor, help yourself, but bring it back.' "He walked on a little farther and the light went out so he said to himself, 'Now he's gone to bed, and he'll be annoyed because I'm bothering him so he'll probably want some money for his jack. And I'll say, all right, it isn't very neighborly but I'll give you a quarter. And he'll say, do you think you can get me out of bed in the middle of the night and then offer me a quarter? Give me a dollar or get yourself a jack somewhere else.' "By the time he got to the farmhouse the fellow had worked himself into a lather. He turned into the gate and muttered. 'A dollar! All right, I'll give you a dollar. But not a cent more! A poor fellow has an accident and all he needs is a jack. You probably won't let me have one no matter what I give you.' "Which brought him to the door and he knocked angrily, loudly. The farmer stuck his head out the window above the door and hollered down, 'Who's there? What do you want?' The fellow stopped pounding on the door and yelled up, 'You and your stupid jack! You know what you can do with it!'" When I stopped laughing, I started thinking, and I said, "Is that what I've been doing?" "Right," he said, "and you'd be surprised how many people come to a lawyer for advice, and instead of calmly stating the facts, start building up a big imaginary fight; what he'll say to his partner, what she'll say to her husband, or how they'll tell the Old Man off about his will. So I tell them the story about the jack and they cool off. "The next time I hear from them, one tells me that the partner was glad to meet him halfway; the gal says she can't understand it, her husband was so reasonable she thought she must have gotten somebody else on the phone; the relatives found out the Old Man had already been asking a lawyer how he could give everything to them before he died, to save them inheritance tax." I thought, "How true! Most of us go through life bumping into obstacles we could easily bypass; spoiling for a fight and lashing out in blind rages at fancied wrongs and imaginary foes. "And we don't even realize what we are doing until someone startles us one day with a vivid word like a lightning flash on a dark night." Well, the other night I was driving home. I was late for dinner and I hadn't phoned my wife. As I crawled along in a line of cars, I became frustrated and angry. I'll tell her I was caught in the heavy weekend traffic and she'll say, "Why didn't you phone me before you left town? "Then I'll say, "What difference does it make anyway, I'm here!" And she'll say, "Yes, and I'm here, too, and I've been here all day waiting to hear from you!" And I'll say, "I suppose I haven't anything else to do but call you up every hour on the hour and make like a lovebird!" And she'll say, "You mean like a wolf, but you wouldn't be calling me!" By this time I am turning into the drive and I am plenty steamed up. As I jumped out and slammed the car door, my wife flung open the window upstairs. "All right!" I shouted up to her, "Say it!" "I will," she cooed softly. "Wanna borrow a jack?
