Bruno Piccolo, PIME this weekend. Fr. Bruno has come to our parish to present the mission appeal on behalf of the Archdiocese of New York. Thank you in advance for your generosity. THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY The church has always held to the belief that Mary was assumed, body and soul, into a heavenly state, even though the belief was not declared as dogmatic until The early church had a robust tradition of revering relics from the saints of the day, and their complete lack of relics from the Mother of Jesus was seen as evidence of this Marian belief. The celebration of the event as a feast dates back to the fourth century in the East and the seventh century in the West. Since Mary was untouched by the stain of sin, she was unable to experience the "wages of sin," which is death. But her Assumption also says something about humanity as well. Sin only has power over us if we allow it. Mary was freed from this power in her Immaculate Conception, and when she responded "yes" to God. We were freed from that power when Jesus died and rose, conquering death. Now, we must respond "yes" to claim the victory that was already won for us. On this feast, we should not only celebrate the great works God has done for us through Our Lady, but also celebrate the truth that we have the opportunity to one day spend eternity with her and her Son, Jesus. This is a Holy Day of Obligation. There will be a 7:00 PM Holy Mass on Monday, August 14th and both and 8:30 AM and 7:00 PM Mass on Tuesday, August 15th. PARISH APPRECIATION PICNIC Will take place on Sept. 10th at 1 PM at the Centerville Firehouse. This event is entirely free. It is Fr. Bill s way of showing his appreciation to everyone for all we do and for who we are. To make your reservation, call Denise Dudzic at ARE YOU IN NEED OF THE HEALING POWER OF JESUS? This Sunday, August 13th at the 10:30 Holy Mass we will be anointing those who need the strengthening power of Jesus and the grace of the Holy Spirit in their time of sickness or notable weakness. Elderly people (those over 60) may be anointed if they are notably weakened even though no serious illness is present. This Sacrament can be received by all baptized who are physically, emotionally, or spiritually sick; especially children. This Sacrament is used to comfort the sick in time of anxiety and to encourage them to fight against illness and perhaps, restore them to health. The concern of Christ for the bodily and spiritual welfare of those who are ill is the common responsibility of all Christians. All can pray and through these prays of encouragement and faith help the sick to unite themselves with the sufferings of Christ for the good of God s people. These prayers may also lead to healing physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The letter of St. James states that the sick are to be anointed in order to raise them up and save them. By the grace of the Holy Spirit the whole person is sustained by trusting God and strengthened against the temptations of the evil one and against anxiety over death. This is a Sacrament to help people live fuller lives as Jesus said that He came so that we might have life to the full. 3 THE NINETEENTH SUNDAY My Dearest Sisters and Brothers in Our Savior, I am writing this letter to you as a reminder of some upcoming events. This weekend, we welcome Father Bruno of P.I.M.E. Missionaries who is here on behalf of the Society of the Propagation of the Faith and his religious community. Father Bruno will be the guest homilist at all three Holy Masses. The special second collection this weekend is for the work of the salvation of souls that P.I.M.E. and the Society of the Propagation of the Faith do throughout the globe. I want to thank you in advance for welcoming Father to our parish family. I will minister the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick during the 10:30 A.M. Holy Mass this Sunday, August 13 th, immediately following the homily by Father Bruno. Any Catholic age 7 and older who is seriously ill and/or has the effects of old age qualifies for this Sacrament. Remember, a 60 year old may have more ill effects of aging than a 90 year old so it does not depend upon age alone. MONDAY EVENING, AUGUST 14 th AND TUESDAY, AUGUST 15 th, IS THE HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION OF THE ASSUMPTION INTO HEAVEN OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY. Holy Mass on Monday will be 7:00 P.M. and there will be Holy Masses on Tuesday will be 8:30 A.M. and 7:00 P.M. PLEASE GO TO A CATHOLIC MASS AT SOME CATHOLIC CHURCH EITHER MONDAY EVENING OR DURING THE DAY/EVENING OF TUESDAY. I am pleased to announce that next Saturday afternoon at 1 P.M., August 19 th, our Bishop Vicar, Most Rev. Dominick Lagonegro, will minister the Sacrament of Confirmation to Mackenzie Feeney in our Church Chapel. I have had the joy of EUCHARISTIC ADORATION- Will take place next weekend after the 10:30 Mass and continue until the 8:30 PM Benediction. Evening prayers will be prayed at 5:30 PM. Sign up sheets at the side entrance of the church PROGRAMS Program 1: The Great Adventure Genesis to Revelation Tuesdays: 6:30 to 8:30 PM August 29th to November 14th. Program 2: Revelation Thursdays 6:30 to 8:30 PM August 31st to November 16th. All classes will be held at Immaculate Conception School in Kingston. For more information, call RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS- Registration has begun for our Religious Education Program. Our program is open to all children from 4 years of age through 9 th grade. 4 AUGUST 13, 2017 PRAYER FOR LIFE Jesus, Mary and Joseph we love you very much. Help us spiritually adopt and protect all human life from preborn to natural death. Amen. - MAKING ALL THINGS NEW God our Father, through the Gospel and the Eucharist, You bring us together as Your Church in the Archdiocese of New York. Send us Your Holy Spirit, to enlighten our minds and guide our actions as we plan for the future of parish life in this Archdiocese. Help us learn new ways to strengthen and revitalize our parish communities, and to be good stewards of the spiritual and material gifts that sustain them. Bless our work, so that our parishes may continue to witness to the truth of the Gospel, and be a sign of Your love for all people. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. RAGS AT THE BANQUET Once upon a time a man lived in the streets, clad only in the dirtiest and worst of rags. One day a person from the Palace saw him, and approached him. There was going to be a banquet at the Palace, and he had instructions to come and invite people from the highways and byways. Would he like to come? The man was indeed interested. However, he could not attend a banquet dressed in his rags. The Palace representative assured him they would exchange his rags for some suitable finery to wear to the banquet. All was in order. The two arrived at the Palace where they went directly to the dressing chambers of the King. Servants took the filthy rags, bundled them in a little package, and proceeded to rub, scrub, and clean the man. He was then allowed to choose his robes from the closets of the King. He was told that whatever he picked he would be able to keep. He chose an exquisite inner garment of purest silk, and an outer robe of finest purple satin. He was ready for the banquet! As they left the dressing quarters, the man grabbed his old rags. The servants told him to just leave them, because he wouldn't need them anymore. However, he insisted on taking the bundle with him. In the Palace banquet hall, the festivities were about to begin. Nearly everyone was there, including the King himself. The man was seated. He hid his bundle of rags on his lap, underneath the tablecloth. The banquet was not to be believed! There was music and dancing, and every kind of delicacy imaginable. As the trays were passed, the beggar had difficulty getting the food onto his plate. He was constantly juggling the package of old rags on his lap, balancing it so it wouldn't fall off. It constantly distracted him from what was going on in the grand hall. Eventually the evening ended and the great gala event was over. Everyone was stuffed to the gills except for the man clinging to his rag bundle. He was as hungry as when he had come in. He never had eaten even one morsel of the food. He had been too busy fixing and holding on to his old rags. Jesus invites all of us to God's great banquet, to leave our old ways and old rags, and to say, "Yes!" to Him and to a new and glorious way of living. That is good news!
