3 EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME My Dearest Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus Our Lord and Savior, This Wednesday, March 1 st, is the beginning of the Holy Season of Lent with Ash Wednesday. While it is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation, it is a special day on the Christian calendar. It begins that period of time in which we recall Christ s 40 days of fasting and prayer before He began His public ministry. It also recalls the 40 years that the Israelites wandered in the desert before being permitted to enter the Promised Land. It further recalls the 40 days that Moses fasted and prayed on Mount Sinai (also called Mount Tabor) while he was given the Ten Commandments. So, with these roots in the Sacred Scriptures (the Holy Bible) in mind, Ash Wednesday begins a prolonged period of fasting, prayer, and works of charity (almsgiving). We are encouraged to practice prayer, fasting, and works of charity everyday; however, we practice these penances in an even greater way during Lent. The Season of Lent (a word from the German word Lenten which translates as spring ) lasts 44 days in total. We have Ash Wednesday and then the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday after Ash Wednesday, and then the First Sunday in Lent starts the proverbial 40 Days until the Easter Tridumm of Holy Thursday, the Easter Vigil, and Easter Sunday. As we approach the Easter Triduum, I will write to you more about that period of days after Lent concludes. May all of us practice these Lenten penances in accordance with our physical and mental abilities. Please remember NOT to be injurious to one s health and well-being as we strive to make this Penitential Season the best one that we ever had for the love of God and in reparation for sinfulness committed by other people who may not care about sinning against God and neighbor. The schedule for Ash Wednesday is as follows: 8:30 A.M. Holy Mass with the Distribution of Blessed Ashes during the Holy Mass; 4:00 P.M. Liturgy of the Word Service during which Blessed Ashes are imposed; and 7:00 P.M. Holy Mass with Distribution of Blessed Ashes during the Holy Mass. STATIONS OF THE CROSS- Will take place here at St. John s every Friday evening during Lent at 7:00 PM. BOY SCOUT RELIGIOUS EMBLEM AWARDS There will be an meeting at St. John s in Woodstock at 12:30 PM for Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Ventures, and their parents on Feb. 26th to earn their respective religious awards. THE SAUGERTIES COLUMBIETTES Would like to invite all practical Catholic women, 18 or older, to attend their Open House on Sunday, March 5th at 1 PM at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Saugerties, FMI, call Millie at CARDINAL S APPEAL Please consider giving to the Cardinal s Appeal for It saves souls and it saves lives. Thank you in advance for your generosity! Our semi-annual 20 Week Club Dinner is this Sunday, February 26 th, at Anthony s Banquet Hall just near Exit 21 of the Thruway. I look forward to joining you in this important fun and fund raiser. I want to thank, in advance, anyone and everyone who are involved with the Dinner that afternoon starting at 1:00 P.M. Please pray for good weather, safe travels, and a good community building day for our parish family and wider communities. The Dinner will have a Mardi Gras theme to help enjoy the afternoon. Speaking of fun and fund raiser events, the Advisory Committee for Parish Development is sponsoring and organizing the Pot Luck Dinner Auction, which is scheduled for next Saturday evening, March 4 th, at 6:30 P.M. (the Snow/Ice Date is Sunday, March 5 th, at 12:30 P.M.). The 5:00 P.M. Saturday Holy Mass will be held in the Chapel portion of the Church building with the partition separating the set-up from Friday, March 3 rd, in the Church Hall from the offering of the Holy Mass in the Chapel. WE VERY MUCH NEED HELP SORTING AUCTION ITEMS AS WELL AS PUTTING TOGETHER GIFT BASKETS FOR THE POT LUCK DINNER AUCTION SO PLEASE, IF YOU POSSIBLY CAN HELP ON ONE OR MORE TIMES, COME TO BARBARA RENNER S FOURTH GRADE CLASSROOM; WE MEET AT 5:00 P.M. Stations of the Cross will be every Friday at 7:00 P.M., during Lent beginning with this Friday, March 3 rd. Even though the Church Hall will be set up for the Pot Luck Dinner Auction, I will still be able to conduct the Stations of the Cross at 7 P.M. this Friday evening. 5 FEBRUARY 26, 2017 PRAYER FOR LIFE Jesus, Mary and Joseph we love you very much. Help us spiritually adopt and protect all human life from preborn to natural death. Amen. MAKING ALL THINGS NEW God our Father, through the Gospel and the Eucharist, You bring us together as Your Church in the Archdiocese of New York. Send us Your Holy Spirit, to enlighten our minds and guide our actions as we plan for the future of parish life in this Archdiocese. Help us learn new ways to strengthen and revitalize our parish communities, and to be good stewards of the spiritual and material gifts that sustain them. Bless our work, so that our parishes may continue to witness to the truth of the Gospel, and be a sign of Your love for all people. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. I WAS NOTHING Jesus... I had nothing till I met you My life was worthless Just like a piece of clay Laying on the ground before your feet. But you came and picked me up. You saw the beauty in me, The beauty you alone saw... only you..no one else, not even me. You placed me in front of you, And saw what you could make out of me. You then got ready And started working into my life. You worked your loving hands so gently And made sure I wouldn't get hurt. You molded me to an image of you And breathed life into my soul. TEAMWORK- If you ll make the toast and pour the juice, sweetheart, said the newlywed bridge, breakfast will be ready. Good, what are we having for breakfast? asked the new husband. Toast and juice, she replied.
