Pre-registration is required by May 24th. Our parish will be honoring all who will be celebrating 25 or 50 years of marriage at a special Mass on May 29th at 8:30 AM. With a reception to follow. MASTER S PLAN PROJECT We are in Mrs. Renner s 4th Grade Class and as our Master s Plan Project we are hosting a coffee shop after several of the Holy Masses. This coffee shop has been named the Helping Hands Café. The coffee shop will be opened will be after all the Holy Masses the weekend on May 21st & 22nd. We invite everyone to our Café at the rear of the church to enjoy some delicious baked goods and hot and cold beverages. All monies raised will be donated to five charities: St. Jude s Children s Hospital, The Ronald McDonald House, The American Cancer Society, The ASPCA and The Wounded Warriors. We would love to serve you as together we help to serve others. HOSPICE BEREAVEMENT CHILDREN S GROUPS One in Dutchess County at St. Francis Day Care Center, 23 Spackenkill Road in Poughkeepsie and one in Ulster County at Hudson Valley Hospice, 400 Aaron Court in Kingston. The groups include stories, discussion, arts, and crafts, music, movement, expressive writing, and other fun activities. 3 THE MOST HOLY TRINITY My Dearest Sisters and Brothers in the Most Holy Trinity, I extend, on behalf of all of us at Saint John the Evangelist Church, my heartfelt congratulations to the seven children who received their First Holy Communion on Saturday morning, May 7 th. In alphabetical order, the children were: Max Baker, Eian Cooper, Regan Kavanagh, Anthony Lewoc, Viola Myers, Jillian Nowitzki, and McCoy Rothe. May we please pray that they and their families will always receive Our Lord in Holy Communion in the state of sanctifying grace upon their souls. Speaking of our Religious Education Program, the second of three Helping Hands Café weekends is after our three Holy Masses for Sunday. God bless Michele Loebbaka, Leo Loviza, Robert McDonald, Katie Nowitzki, and McKayla Weber for doing this Master s Plan Project. Next Sunday, May 29 th, features two very happy events: the Golden and Silver Marriage Couples and the Annual Corpus Christi Procession. Those husbands and wives who received the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony or Marriage either in 1966 or in 1991will be honored at the 8:30 A.M. Holy Mass with a reception to follow the Holy Mass. I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude in advance to Joe and Joan Billotti for spearheading the event. It will be my pleasure and honor to lead those couples in the Renewal of HEALING AFTER ABORTION Ocean of Mercy Entering Canaan Days of Prayer and Healing For Women. May 28th. It is a wonderfully touching sight to see these husbands and wives looking into the eyes of each other as they pledge their vows of the Sacrament of Marriage once again! At the conclusion of the 10:30 A.M. Holy Mass, we will be able to process with the Most Blessed Sacrament either outdoors, if the weather is favorable, or indoors, if the weather is inclement. The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ is a good opportunity next weekend to renew our firm belief in the Real Presence of the Lord in the Most Holy Eucharist. May the Good Lord bless us as we honor Him. I will write more about Memorial Day in next week s letter to you. Incidentally, it falls on its traditional date of May 30 th this year. Originally, it was called Decoration Day. If you are among the 45 folks slated to travel on the bus trip to Bob Cranston s Ordination as a Permanent Deacon, it is strongly advisable that you bring a bag breakfast and a bag lunch with you. The bus departs from our parking lot at 5:30 P.M. and arrives back at the parking lot by 3 P.M. If you are not going that day, but had signed one of the two yellow pads, please call me on my cell phone at In that case, we won t delay the departure unnecessarily. I visited Msgr. Williams (affectionately known as Father Bill ) on Sunday afternoon, May 15 th or Pentecost Sunday. He came as the Pastor on Pentecost 20 years ago in We chatted at his Sawkill home for a good two hours as one brother priest to the other. He welcomes anyone who wants to visit him; if you need directions to his home, I will be most pleased to give them to you. He prays for all of us in his Daily Holy Mass, his Divine Office, and the Holy Rosary. I shall visit him again in the not too distant future. I impart God s blessing upon all of you. FAMILY RETREAT-Marianist Family Retreat Center, Cape May Point, NJ. Retreat weeks start each Monday beginning June 29th through the end of August. FMI call or visit JOKE A kindergartner was practicing spelling with magnetic letters on the refrigerator: CAT, DOG, DAD, and MOM have been proudly displayed for all to see. One morning while getting ready for the day, he bounded into the room with his arms outstretched. In his hands were three magnetic letters: G-O-D. Look what I spelled, Mom! with a proud smile on his face. That s wonderful! his mom praised him. Now go put them on the fridge so Dad can see when he gets home tonight. The mom happily thought that the religious education is certainly having an impact. Just then, a little voice called from the kitchen. Mom? How do you spell ZILLA?

5 MAY 22, 2016 PRAYER FOR LIFE Jesus, Mary and Joseph we love you very much. Help us spiritually adopt and protect all human life from preborn to natural death. Amen. EYE OPENER I saw him in the church building for the first time on Wednesday. He was in his mid-70's, with thinning silver hair and a neat brown suit. Many times in the past I had invited him to come. Several other Christian friends had talked to him about the Lord and had tried to share the good news with him. He was a well-respected, honest man with so many characteristics a Christian should have, but he had never put on Christ, nor entered the doors of the church. "Have you ever been to a church service in your life?" I had asked him a few years ago. We had just finished a pleasant day of visiting and talking. He hesitated. Then with a bitter smile he told me of his childhood experience some fifty years ago. He was one of many children in a large impoverished family. His parents had struggled to provide food, with little left for housing and clothing. When he was about ten, some neighbors invited him to worship with them. The Sunday School class had been very exciting! He had never heard such songs and stories before! He had never heard anyone read from the Bible! After class was over, the teacher took him aside and said, "Son, please don't come again dressed as you are now. We want to look our best when we come into God's house." He stood in his ragged, unpatched overalls. Then looking at his dirty bare feet, he answered softly, "No, ma'am, I won't ever." "And I never did," he said, abruptly ending our conversation. There must have been other factors to have hardened him so, but this experience formed a significant part of the bitterness in his heart. I'm sure that Sunday School teacher meant well. But did she really understand the love of Christ? Had she studied and accepted the teachings found in the second chapter of James? What if she had put her arms around the dirty, ragged little boy and said, "Son, I am so glad you are here, and I hope you will come every chance you get to hear more about Jesus." I reflected on the awesome responsibility a teacher or pastor or a parent has to welcome little ones in His name. How far reaching her influence was! I prayed that I might be ever open to the tenderness of a child's heart, and that I might never fail to see beyond the appearance and behavior of a child to the eternal possibilities within. Yes, I saw him in the church house for the first time on Wednesday. As I looked at that immaculately dressed old gentleman lying in his casket, I thought of the little boy of long ago. I could almost hear him say, "No, ma'am, I won't ever." And I wept.
