3 SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD My Dearest Brothers and Sisters in The Infant Jesus, I am writing this letter to you on Thursday, December 22nd, and my letter will be relatively brief. We of course are celebrating this Solemnity of Mary, The Mother of God this weekend because Christmas was last Sunday and therefore, the Octave or eighth day of the Christmas Season also falls on a Sunday. We also celebrate this day as World Day of Prayer for Peace as Blessed Pope Paul VI designated this day be perpetually known as of January 1, In the secular realm of our world, this is also New Year s Day; it is a time for all of us to make good spiritual resolutions for the sake of the salvation of the soul God gave to each of us folks. If you want or need advice as to what spiritual resolutions to make for 2017 and beyond this year, feel free to seek my advice; after all, the reason I am your Pastor or Parish Priest is to help all of us, including myself, to avoid Hell, shorten Purgatory, and obtain Heaven for all eternity. Our Finance Council of the parish will meet in the Rectory on Tuesday afternoon, January 10th, at 4 :00 PM. Also the Advisory Committee for Parish Development will be meeting in the Church Hall on Wednesday, January 11th, at 6:30 PM and everyone is most welcome to attend and participate in the Advisory Committee meeting on January 11th. Please pray that both meetings will go the way the Good Lord would want them to occur. Please note that there will be no Instructional Prayer Meetings this Sunday, January 1st, because of the national three PRAY THE ROSARY Take the Prayer Challenge that is to pray the rosary for the unborn babies from today, every day until January 22nd the anniversary date of the infamous Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. Free rosaries and instruction pamphlets will also be available. YOUNG ADULT RETREAT February 10-12th at the Marianist Family Retreat Center, Cape May Point. The Church Store hours will be from 3:30 until 5:00 PM and after the 5 PM Holy Mass on Saturday, January 7th and after the 8:30 and 10:30 AM Holy Masses on Sunday, January 8th. In fact, thanks be to Elaine Arvidson, the Church Store will remain open until after the conclusion of the Holy Mass in the Spanish language which will be on Sunday, January 8th, at 12:00 Noontime. I want to thank Deacon Bob for spearheading this outreach to our Spanish speaking brothers and sisters in the Catholic Faith and Life. I am also deeply grateful to the Redemptorist priests who are kind enough to offer the Holy Mass in Spanish for our fellow parishioners. Speaking of things that Deacon Bob is spearheading, one of the Sundays in mid to late July later this year, there will be an outdoor Christian Music Concert on our front lawn from approximately Noon until at least 6 PM. More information will be forthcoming and if you have any questions, please ask Deacon Bob since he is handling all of the details. God bless him for doing this and all people are most welcome to attend the spiritually uplifting event. Well, that is all for now. Happy and Holy New Year to all of you! Sincerely, with prayers, Father Bill Woodruff CHILD ABUSE AWARENESS- Every day in this country, nearly 9,000 children are reported abused and neglected, over 170 in Ulster County alone. Many of these children are eventually placed into the foster care system. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Ulster County is helping to make a positive impact in the lives of these children by training volunteers to speak on behalf of their best interest. By working one-on-one, volunteers become well-acquainted with each child s situation and present recommendations to the court for placement, ensuring that judges are equipped to make informed decisions. This is your chance to make a difference in the life of a child living in your community. All you need is hours a month and a willing heart. If you are interested, please contact DAYTOP- A son, a daughter, a father can readily fall prey to the pitfalls of drugs and alcohol! What you do will chart your family s future! Father O Brien s 40-year old Daytop is as close as your telephone! Daytop, Rhinebeck, P.O. Box 214, Rhinebeck, NY 12572, , Hotline# Daytop. OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES A nursery school teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She would occasionally walk around to see each child s work. As she got to little Sarah who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. Sarah replied, I m drawing God. The teacher paused and said, But no one knows what God looks like. Sarah replied, They will in a minute!

4 JANUARY 1, 2017 When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child. All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds. And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. - Lk 2:17-19 Please Pray For All Bishops, Priests, Deacons & Religious! 5 DECEMBER 18, 2016 PRAYER FOR LIFE Jesus, Mary and Joseph we love you very much. Help us spiritually adopt and protect all human life from preborn to natural death. Amen. THE STORY BEHIND THE PRAYING HANDS Back in the fifteenth century lived a family with eighteen children. In order merely to keep food on the table, the father worked almost eighteen hours a day. Despite their seemingly hopeless condition, two of Albrecht Durer the Elder's children had a dream. They both wanted to pursue their talent for art, but they knew that their father would never be financially able to send them to Nuremberg to study at the Academy. After many discussions at night in their crowded bed, the two boys finally worked out a pact. They would toss a coin. The loser would go down into the nearby mines and, with his earnings, support his brother while he attended the academy. Then, when that brother who won the toss completed his studies, in four years, he would support the other brother at the academy, either with sales of his artwork or, if necessary, also by laboring in the mines. They tossed a coin on a Sunday morning after church. Albrecht Durer won the toss and went off to Nuremberg. Albert went down into the mines and, for the next four years, financed his brother, whose work at the academy was almost an immediate sensation. By the time he graduated, he was beginning to earn considerable fees for his commissioned works. When the young artist returned to his village, the Durer family held a festive dinner on their lawn to celebrate Albrecht's triumphant homecoming. After a long and memorable meal, punctuated with music and laughter, Albrecht rose from his honored position at the head of the table to drink a toast to his beloved brother for the years of sacrifice. His closing words were, "And now, Albert, blessed brother of mine, now it is your turn. Now you can go to Nuremberg to pursue your dream, and I will take care of you." All heads turned in eager expectation to the far end of the table where Albert sat, tears streaming down his pale face, shaking his lowered head from side to side while he sobbed and repeated, over and over, "No...no...no...no." Finally, Albert rose and wiped the tears from his cheeks. He glanced down the long table at the faces he loved, and then, holding his hands close to his right cheek, he said softly, "No, brother. I cannot go to Nuremberg. It is too late for me. Look... look what four years in the mines have done to my hands! The bones in every finger have been smashed at least once, and lately I have been suffering from arthritis so badly in my right hand that I cannot even hold a glass to return your toast, much less make delicate lines on parchment or canvas with a pen or a brush. No, brother... for me it is too late." More than 450 years have passed. By now, Albrecht Durer's hundreds of masterful portraits, pen and silver-point sketches, watercolors, charcoals, woodcuts, and copper engravings hang in every great museum in the world, but the odds are great that you, like most people, are familiar with only one of Albrecht Durer's works. More than merely being familiar with it, you very well may have a reproduction hanging in your home or office. One day, to pay homage to Albert for all that he had sacrificed, Albrecht Durer painstakingly drew his brother's abused hands with palms together and thin fingers stretched skyward. He called his powerful drawing simply "Hands," but the entire world almost immediately opened their hearts to his great masterpiece and renamed his tribute of love "The Praying Hands."
