Williams 131 Rymrock Road #42, Kingston, NY ARE YOU IN NEED OF THE HEALING POWER OF JESUS IN THE SACRAMENT OF THE SICK? Sunday, August 21st at the 10:30 Holy Mass we will be anointing those who need the strengthening power of Jesus and the grace of the Holy Spirit in their time of sickness or notable weakness. Elderly people (those over 60) may be anointed if they are notably weakened even though no serious illness is present. This Sacrament can be received by all baptized who are physically, emotionally, or spiritually sick; especially children. This Sacrament is used to comfort the sick in time of anxiety and to encourage them to fight against illness and perhaps, restore them to health. The concern of Christ for the bodily and spiritual welfare of those who are ill is the common responsibility of all Christians. All can pray and through these prays of encouragement and faith help the sick to unite themselves with the sufferings of Christ for the good of God s people. These prayers may also lead to healing physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The letter of St. James states that the sick are to be anointed in order to raise them up and save them. By the grace of the Holy Spirit the whole person is sustained by trusting God and strengthened against the temptations of the evil one and against anxiety over death. This is a Sacrament to help people live fuller lives as Jesus said that He came so that we might have life to the full. 100-MILE POWERWALK- Feel free to sponsor Fr. Woodruff in his 100-Mile Power Walk. (July 1st August 30 th ) Sponsorship money can be given directly to Fr. Bill, or you can drop it in the collection basket with a note indicating the 100-Mile Walk. Checks are to be made payable to St. John The Evangelist Church with the memo stating 100-Mile Walk. All monies will be used to offset this year s budget deficit. 3 TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME My Dearest Brothers and Sisters in the Good Lord, This Sunday, at the 10:30 A.M. Holy Mass, following the Homily, I will have the pleasure of doing the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick for those who qualify to receive that Sacrament of Healing and Forgiveness. The qualifications for this Sacrament are the following: 1) a Baptized Catholic who is at least the Age of Reason (at least seven years of age) who has a SERIOUS illness; 2) a Baptized Catholic who is suffering from the infirmaries of old age; 3) a Baptized Catholic who is in danger of death. If one of the above applies to you, then you are eligible to receive this Sacrament. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick always forgives any and all venial sins upon the soul; if there are any mortal sins upon the soul, they can be forgiven PROVIDED THAT THE PERSON IS UNABLE, THROUGH NO FAULT OF ONE S OWN, TO DO THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE. Otherwise, one would need to go to the Sacrament of Penance within a reasonably brief period of time (usually within one week). Also, after the 10:30 A.M. Holy Mass, Deacon Bob will do the Exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament; the monthly All -Day Adoration of Our Lord will take place until Deacon Bob conducts the Rite of Benediction and Reposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament at about the 8:30 P.M. time. My Holy Hour will be about 7:15 until about 8:15 P.M.PLEASE BE MOST WELCOME TO MAKE A VISIT TO THE LORD IN THE HOLY EUCHARIST SOMETIME DURING THIS SUNDAY, AUGUST 21 st. We are looking to plan fun/fund raisers as we kick off the proverbial Fall following Labor Day weekend; one of which is the Fourth Annual Parish Appreciation Picnic starting at 1 P.M. on Sunday, September 11 th, at the Centerville Firehouse grounds. I am most grateful to the Firefighters at the Centerville Firehouse for permitting us to use the facilities. Please pray for lovely weather for the fourth year in a row. If you plan to be there, please call Denise Dudzic at RECOVERY SUNDAY-SEPTEMBER 4 TH - Addiction is an illness. It is not a bad habit or a sign of weakness. It is a treatable illness that kills people. How many times do we say, I will pray a prayer when we hear of a neighbor or a family member who is seriously sick? Do we pray a prayer when we hear of someone who has an addiction? Yes, we do. Our church has a day of prayer for all those affected by addictions. Please come and join us in prayer on September 4 th. MOBILE HEALTH CENTER We would like you to join us at St. Joseph s School on Wednesday, August 24th starting at 9:30 AM for the first visit of a new Mobile Health Center. Sponsored by Archcare, Hudson River Healthcare, and the Archdiocese of NY. This visit will provide health screenings to those of whom do not have healthcare coverage, children and adults. So far, sponsorships have totaled about $3,500; I always appreciate your generosity to your parish. God willing, by the time you read this letter, I will have walked 84 miles with 16 miles remaining in my quest for the parish. Next Sunday, August 28 th, Father John Kearney will be so kind as to offer the 8:30 and 10:30 A.M. Masses while I go visit my sick cousin, Bob Nealon, in Pittsford, NY and visit my sick brother, Gene, in Gettysburg, PA from that day until Friday, September 2 nd. Speaking of vacations, Bob Gauvraeu will return from his well-deserved 12-day vacation this Wednesday, August 24 th. I want to thank both Deacon Bob and Joe Defino, Sr. for filling in for Bob G. while he has been vacationing. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again. To which the gentleman said, Oh, I haven t told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I ve changed my will three times!
