RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS- Registration has begun for our Religious Education Program. Our program is open to all children from 4 years of age through 9 th grade. Please stop by the church or rectory office for a registration form or call Joan Corton at for more information. Our program will be meeting on Mondays from Grade Pre K-6 from 6:05 to 7:35 PM. Seventh and Eighth Graders will continue their program in modular form. Come join us! LETTER FROM PIME MISSIONARIES- This letter is to inform you that Fr. Bruno Piccolo, PIME, will be coming to your parish to present the mission appeal on behalf of the Archdiocese of New York on the weekend of August 12th & 13th. Fr. Piccolo was ordained a PIME Priest in Italy in After his ordination Fr. Bruno worked at PIME s Minor Seminary in Oakland, NJ through 1969 and that year he was assigned as a missionary to the Philippines. He returned in 1977 and worked in vocations and formation for students attending CTU in Chicago ( ) and then as Pastor of St. Patrick s Parish in Los Angeles ( ). In 1994 he worked as a missionary in PIME s mission in Cuanacaxtitlan, Guerrero, Mexico and returned to the U.S. in In 1995 he was elected U.S. Regional Superior of PIME and served in this position through After 2005 Fr. Bruno returned to Italy working at PIME s Mission Center in Naples, Italy; as the Regional Superior of PIME s Italian Region and as Rector of the House working in youth lay missionary ministry in Villa Grugana, Italy. Sunday, August 13th at the 10:30 Holy Mass we will be anointing those who need the strengthening power of Jesus and the grace of the Holy Spirit in their time of sickness or notable weakness. Elderly people (those over 60) may be anointed if they are notably weakened even though no serious illness is present. This Sacrament can be received by all baptized who are physically, emotionally, or spiritually sick; especially children. This Sacrament is used to comfort the sick in time of anxiety and to encourage them to fight against illness and perhaps, restore them to health. The concern of Christ for the bodily and spiritual welfare of those who are ill is the common responsibility of all Christians. All can pray and through these prays of encouragement and faith help the sick to unite themselves with the sufferings of Christ for the good of God s people. These prayers may also lead to healing physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The letter of St. James states that the sick are to be anointed in order to raise them up and save them. By the grace of the Holy Spirit the whole person is sustained by trusting God and strengthened against the temptations of the evil one and against anxiety over death. This is a Sacrament to help people live fuller lives as Jesus said that He came so that we might have life to the full.

3 THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD My Dearest Brothers and Sisters in the Most Gracious God, This weekend s letter and next weekend s letter to you are being composed by me on Monday afternoon, July 31 st, because of scheduling matters. These two letters to you will be relatively brief but they will carry some important information that I want to let you know. As promised in my last letter, I am letting you know that my five and a half day vacation was very restful and peaceful. The first three days, I stayed at my brother s and sister in law s Gettysburg address. Both Gene and Connie have MS but my brother can t be medicated anymore. Gene walks extremely slowly with a cane so that he doesn t fall. He is blind in his right eye; he has tremors in the upper part of his body; he continues to have labored speech and occasionally says things that don t make sense. However, Gene doesn t have any pain and he is grateful to God for that blessing which is a real answer to prayer. Connie moves slower these days but is otherwise reacting well to the medicine she takes to slow the progression of her MS. She takes good care of Gene and she is able to work at home most of the time for the American Cancer Society of Adams County, PA. On the happy side of things, my new great niece was born while I was there; her name is River Hazel Grant; she is the daughter of my niece Amanda and nephew in law Robert. River Hazel was 8 pounds and 1 ounce and she was 21 and a half inches long. She is a healthy baby and her 8 year old sister, Samantha Anne, was all kinds of excited when the news came. Her birth was an answer to prayer in that between Sami and River, there were three stillborn babies who were baptized by the nurses; it was a great relief to everyone that River Hazel is as healthy as Sami. I want to thank you for your prayers for my family. We also had a big family reunion two nights before the birth of the baby. The other two and a half days were spent by me hanging my hat at the Cardinal Egan Pavilion for some of our retired men who need assisted living care all 24 hours. CONGRATULATIONS TO DEACON BOB- I write to grant you the preaching faculties of the Archdiocese of New York. You have fulfilled all of the requirements including appropriate courses and recommendations that qualify you for the solemn duty of preaching. Under the supervision of Rev. Although he has problems with his legs, he is always Father Sunshine with his winning personality. We are all grateful to my two living predecessors, Father Al and Father Bill, for all they did for us and what they continue to do for us by the power of their prayers. This Sunday, August 6 th, from Noon until 1 P.M., I will hold the Instructional Prayer Meeting as I present the topic: The Holy Mass. I will describe what we do and why we do what we do. You are most welcome to the Chapel for the presentation. ALL MEMBERS OF COMMUNITY ACTION/FOOD PANTRY ARE URGED TO COME TO A SPECIAL MEETING ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 8 th, STARTING AT 1:30 P.M. IN THE CHURCH HALL. Anyone else is most welcome to attend as well. Next weekend, August 12 th and 13 th, we will welcome Father Bruno of P.I.M.E. Missionaries to our parish for the annual Mission Cooperative. Father will be the homilist at all three Holy Masses and the special second collection will be for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith. I wish to thank you in advance for your generosity to the missionary work of the Church as well as for your prayers for that work of the salvation of souls. Next Sunday, August 13 th, at the 10:30 A.M. Holy Mass, I will be honored to do the annual Anointing of the Sick Sacrament for those folks who are seriously ill in one way or another. Please spread the good word about the availability of that Sacrament, particularly if one is suffering from the ill effects of aging. Next Saturday, August 12 th, at 12:30 P.M., in the Chapel, Deacon Bob will minister the Sacrament of Baptism for the first time as a Permanent Deacon: congratulations to Deacon Bob. 4 AUGUST 6, 2017 PRAYER FOR LIFE Jesus, Mary and Joseph we love you very much. Help us spiritually adopt and protect all human life from preborn to natural death. Amen. - MAKING ALL THINGS NEW God our Father, through the Gospel and the Eucharist, You bring us together as Your Church in the Archdiocese of New York. Send us Your Holy Spirit, to enlighten our minds and guide our actions as we plan for the future of parish life in this Archdiocese. Help us learn new ways to strengthen and revitalize our parish communities, and to be good stewards of the spiritual and material gifts that sustain them. Bless our work, so that our parishes may continue to witness to the truth of the Gospel, and be a sign of Your love for all people. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. A man got a job as a night watchman at a factory where there had been a lot of thefts by the workers on the night shift. Every morning when the night shift workers passed through his gate it was his job to check their bags and pockets to make sure that nothing was being stolen. Things were going along very well the first night on the job until a man pushing a wheelbarrow of newspapers came through his gate. Aha, he thought, that man thinks he can cover up what he is stealing with the newspaper. So he removed the paper only to find nothing. Still he felt that the man was acting strangely, so he questioned him about the paper. I get a little extra money from newspapers I recycle, so I go into the lunchroom and pick up all the ones people have thrown away. The guard let him pass but decided to keep a close eye on him. The next night it was the same, and the night after that. Week after week it went on. The same guy would push the wheelbarrow of newspapers past the guard s checkpoint. The guard would always check and find nothing. Then one night, about a year later, the guard reported for work only to find a message had been left for him telling him to report to his supervisor. He walked into the supervisor's office and before he could say a word, the boss said, You're fired! Fired? he asked in total surprise. Why? What did I do? It was your job to make sure that no one stole anything from this plant and you have failed. Wait a minute, what do you mean failed. Nobody ever stole anything from this place while I was on guard. Oh, really, the boss answered. Then how do you account for the fact that there are 365 missing wheelbarrows?.

I don t think He should have to ask me to share the blessings I would never have had without help. PASTOR S COMMENT Some folks gauge their giving by what others give. Some, moved with zeal for God and His work, lead the way with spontaneous, generous, cheerful giving. Thank God for this kind of people in the church. Remember St. John s in Your Will!
