TEXAS ROADHOUSE- Our church will be having a Fundraiser night at Texas Roadhouse in Kingston on Tuesday, November 29th from 4 to 10 PM. Coupons for this cause are available at the doors of the church. St. John s will receive 10% of your total food purchases. Parishioners will be in the lobby of Texas Roadhouse that evening with additional invitations. BREAKFAST WITH SANTA- This year s event will be on December 3 rd from 12 2 PM. Proceeds will be donated to the Down Syndrome Association of The Hudson Valley and local families in need. SCRATCH-OFF LOTTERY TICKETS- Altar Rosary will be selling chances to win $100 worth of Scratch-Off Lottery Tickets. Chances are $1 each or 6 for $5. YARN NEEDED Maria Granda is collecting yarn for a volunteer that will be making blankets. Drop your donations in the Food Pantry Box at the side of the church. ADOPT-A-SENIOR FOR CHRISTMAS- Please take note that all presents for the Adopt a Senior for Christmas program must be returned to the church no later than the weekend of December 3 rd and 4 th. Make sure your package is labeled with your senior s number. FMI, contact Maria Granda at ADVENT WALK Will take place on Sunday, November 27th. This year s Walk will begin at 3 PM at the Atonement Lutheran Church on Market Street. From there it will proceed to the following churches: First Congregational, Saugerties Reformed, Saugerties United Methodist and ending at St. Mary of The Snow. Those participating in the walk are asked to bring a child s gift for abused children of Ulster County. Please mark on the outside of the gift, what it is, if it is for a girl or boy, and if it is clothing, what size. Monetary gifts will be gratefully accepted and the monies used to buy additional presents. Please make checks payable to the Saugerties Area Council of Churches. A light reception will be held immediately following the service at St. Mary of The Snow. Each congregation is asked to help by donating cookies, brownies, and/or other suitable finger foods. These may be brought to Atonement Lutheran Church so that they may be transported to St. Mary of The Snow, or you can bring them directly to St. Mary s. 3 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT My Dearest Brothers and Sisters in the Long Expected Jesus, Today begins the Church s New Year and the Holy Season of Advent. The word Advent means coming and we celebrate the two comings of Christ from now through December 16 th. From December 17 th through the 24 th, we then prepare proximately for the celebration of the anniversary of the Birth of Jesus. Our Lord Jesus Christ is both true God and true man; He is the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity as true God from all eternity Who took on a human nature at the Annunciation celebrated on March 25 th and nine months later was born on Christmas Day. If you have brought your family Advent Wreath, I will happily bless all the Advent wreathes at each of the Holy Masses this weekend. I will be continuing to hear Confessions of the balance of the 3 rd through 6 th graders in the parish s Religious Education (Faith Formation) Program this Monday evening, November 28 th. It is a great joy to do this ministry for the children. Please go to Texas Roadhouse this Tuesday, November 29 th, for dinner as our parish will receive 10% of whatever you spend on the meal. The 20-Week Club Committee will meet this Wednesday, November 30 th, at 5:30 P.M. at the Church Hall. The five priests of our Making All Things New Cluster will meet at Father George Hommel s Rectory this Wednesday evening November 30 th, at 7:00 P.M. to start the ball rolling for the parishes in Centerville (that is us), Saugerties/Glasco, Lake Katrine/East Kingston, West Hurley-Woodstock, and Phonecia to POSTER CONTEST- The Knights of Columbus has introduced the Keep Christ in Christmas poster contest. Open to ages 5 to 14. Please contact Will Myers at to obtain an application and poster supplies. PRAY THE ROSARY Thanksgiving Day is only a few days away. We of the parish are reminded that last year at this time we asked you to begin a prayer challenge that is to pray the rosary for the unborn babies from Thanksgiving Day, every day until January 22nd the anniversary date of the infamous Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. On that day, thousands of people will protest at the March for Life to bring an end to abortion. Last year over 50 people of this parish signed up, and our hopes are that we can improve on that number. Sign-up sheets will be at both exits of the church today. Free rosaries and instruction pamphlets will also be available. ALTAR ROSARY CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON Will be held at Mirabella s Restaurant on December 11th at 1 PM. It will consist of four courses. Prepaid reservations are due by December 7th with your choice of one of the following: Eggplant Rollatini with Penne Pasta, Chicken Francese over Angel Hair Pasta; Tilapia Oreganta with Wild Rice; or Sliced Garlic Steak with Horseradish Mashed Potatoes. Breakfast/Brunch with Santa will be next Saturday, December 3 rd, from 12 Noon until 2:00 P.M. in the Church Hall. You are most welcome to attend it. I want to thank Vanessa Loviza for spearheading this very fun event. Next Sunday, December 4 th, will be the Family Mass at the 10:30 A.M. Liturgy. From Noon until 1:00 P.M., yours truly will lead the Instructional Prayer Meeting with the topic: Saint Paul s Letter to Saint Titus; it will be the third of the Pastoral Epistles that we will have examined over these past three monthly sessions. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION, IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY WILL BE ON THE EVENING OF DECEMBER 7 th AND ON DECEMBER 8 th. Also, our first Holy Mass in Spanish will be on Sunday, December 11 th, at 12 Noon in our Church; we hope to offer it monthly thanks to the ministry of the local Redemptorist priests. Soup and sandwiches available on Sunday. HISPANIC MASS A Spanish-language Holy Mass will be celebrated here at St. John s on Sunday, December 11th at 12 noon, celebrating Our Lady of Guadalupe. All are invited to celebrate this Holy Mass with our Hispanic brothers and sisters. Light refreshments will follow. I know the cost of running a home is constantly rising. I believe that tithing is the only way for me to do my fair share. PASTOR S COMMENT It is only the hand that is open to give that is open to receive. God cannot give us what we refuse to take and God cannot give to us when our hands and hearts cling to things. 5 NOVEMBER 27, 2016 PRAYER FOR LIFE Jesus, Mary and Joseph we love you very much. Help us spiritually adopt and protect all human life from preborn to natural death. Amen. MAKING ALL THINGS NEW God our Father, through the Gospel and the Eucharist, You bring us together as Your Church in the Archdiocese of New York. Send us Your Holy Spirit, to enlighten our minds and guide our actions as we plan for the future of parish life in this Archdiocese. Help us learn new ways to strengthen and revitalize our parish communities, and to be good stewards of the spiritual and material gifts that sustain them. Bless our work, so that our parishes may continue to witness to the truth of the Gospel, and be a sign of Your love for all people. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. CRYING OVER EXPLODED MILK By Rhonda Rhea With a houseful of teens, it would totally frighten you to know how much milk I have to buy in a week. When you buy so many gallons at a time, one of them is bound to get missed somewhere along the way. That "somewhere along the way" happened at exactly the wrong time of the year. A few months ago we had loaded about eight gallons of milk into the car, but never noticed that only seven made it into the house. That lost gallon was in the floor of the minivan under the last seat, lurking and plotting its evil attack. It was in the hottest days of summer and, of all times for the minivan to need a repair or two, that happened to be the week we had to put it in the shop. Three days in the shop. Three days of temperatures over a hundred degrees. The milk swelled up and- horror of horrorsexploded all over the car! Oh, the humanity. It lobbed milk shrapnel all over the entire back seat. Milk? No, maybe it was closer to CHEESE. And the smell! It made its way into every single nook and cranny of the vehicle. The milk/cheese cleanup was nothing compared to the stench fallout we had to deal with for weeks. My eyes are watering just thinking about it. Oh well, there's no use in crying over spilled cheese. There's a certain cool driving look. All the windows are down, the left elbow edges just outside the window; the right hand hangs casually over the steering wheel. Of course, it's not nearly as cool when you're in a MINIVAN. But we still got plenty of chances to get the cool look down. We're talking about a lot of time riding with the windows down. Taking care of sin issues in our lives is even more important than taking every gallon of milk inside the house. When left to simmer, they can explode all kinds of ugliness in our lives, and it can spill right over into the lives of those around us. God is so gracious and forgiving when we confess even the biggest sin detonation in our lives. Psalm 51:1-2 says, "Generous in love - God, give grace! Huge in mercy-wipe out my bad record. Scrub away my guilt, soak out my sins in your laundry." (TM) Nope, holding onto sin is definitely not cool. Letting Him scrub away that stench is glorious - it's better even than that new car smell! Now that's cool! As for us, we're still exercising a lot of "coolness" riding with the windows down. It's still cold out. We're a little too cool.
