THE JACK ROSE MEMORIAL BEATITUDE SCHOLARSHIP- If you are graduating from High School, plan to further your education and are a member of St. John s Parish, you can apply for Mrs. Renner s 4 th Grade Religious Education Class Beatitude Scholarship. Scholarship applications are available at either the church or rectory office. All applications must be returned by April 1st. POT LUCK DINNER AUCTION- Mark your calendars for our Pot Luck Dinner Auction which will take place on March 3 rd following the 5:00 PM Mass. We are looking for new or very gently used items, services, and gift cards to be auctioned off. All items can be left in the church kitchen. If you are donating a gift cards or service voucher, please give them to Fr. Bill. Thank you for your support of this event. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS There will be NO Religious Education Classes on Monday, February 19th, in honor of Presidents Day. COMEDY NIGHT Save the date of April 28th, when St. John s will host its 2nd Annual Comedy Night at 8:30 PM at the Knights of Columbus. Two professional comedians, provided by Mike Speirs. Reservation details to be announced shortly. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION- Will take place this weekend after the 10:30 Mass and continue until the 8:30 PM Benediction. Evening prayers will be prayed at 5:30 PM. Sign up sheets are located at the side entrance of the church. ALTAR ROSARY SOCIETY- Will be meeting Wednesday, March 7th at 6:30 PM. All ladies of the parish 18 years of age or older are most welcomed to attend. Also, members that have not paid their dues for 2018 and 2017 are requested to do so at that time. There will be no refreshments served for future meetings. Also, the Memory Tree proceeds donated to St. John s Fuel Fund was $239 not the combined amount of the Lotto Tree as previously reported to me. My apologies for this oversight. JOHN S COMMUNITY SQUARE AND FAMILY DANCE We will be hosting a Community Square and Family Dance here at St. John s on Friday, April 6th from 7 to 9 PM. Fun for the whole family. Free will offering. STATIONS OF THE CROSS Will take place each Friday evening during Lent at 7:00 PM. SNOW REMOVAL- Volunteers are needed to help with the snow blowing and shoveling around the church and rectory after each snow storm. 3 FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT My Dearest Brothers and Sisters in the Fasting and Praying Lord Jesus Christ, The Holy Season of Lent began with this past Ash Wednesday and the Lenten Weekdays after Ash Wednesday. This weekend, we are embarking upon the traditional 40 Days of Lent with the First Sunday of Lent. Lent is a word that means spring ; it is not so much the Spring Season as it is the attempt by all the Faithful (both Laity and Clerics) to bring springtime to their souls (especially through Prayer, the Holy Sacraments, and Devotions such as the Stations of the Cross; Fasting such as lesser meals; and Works of Charity or Almsgiving such as the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy). It is an ideal time to bring souls back to the State of Sanctifying Grace or to increase that Sanctifying Grace in our souls. Please remember, those of us 14 years of age or older, we are to abstain from eating meat on the Fridays of Lent and Stations of the Cross are conducted on the Fridays of Lent at 7:00 P.M. by either Deacon Bob or yours truly. I received a favorable evaluation this past Monday, February 12 th, from the committee of four priests: Bishop Lagonegro, our Bishop-Vicar for Ulster, Sullivan, Orange, and Rockland County Deaneries, Father George Hommel, our Dean for Ulster County, Father Chris Berean, our Ulster Deanery representative on the Priests Council, and Father Matthew Newcomb, the representative on the Priest Personnel Board for Ulster, Sullivan, and Orange County Deaneries. I want to thank you for writing some 75 to 100 letters in support of me: I received by far the most letters of any of us priests who are being evaluated this year! I deeply appreciated your collective vote of confidence in me as your Pastor. The next step will be that Father Newcomb will compose a report for the Priest Personnel Board and that body will make a recommendation to the Cardinal. Cardinal Dolan will then make all the reappointments of incumbent Pastors by early to mid June; ultimately, it is the Cardinal who will make the decision as to whether I be reappointed for only one additional six year term that would take me to June 30 th of 2024 or moved from here to a new assignment as of July 1 st of this year. I am at peace with whatever the Good God wants as worked out through the will of 2018 BIBLE STUDY PROGRAM Will take place at the Immaculate Conception School, 471 Delaware Avenue, Kingston. Thursday, February 22nd, 6:30 to 8:30 PM Course: An Encounter with Mercy. For more information or to register, call L. Care Navigator is free of charge, and extends to questions about such things as: Housing for Seniors and Disabled Persons, Health- Related Legal and Financial Issues, Caregiver Support Groups, Access to Healthcare, Food and Nutrition, Dementia Care, Transportation Options, and Volunteer Opportunities. I want to thank you for helping me to celebrate my 62 nd birthday on February 10 th ; I deeply appreciate your care for me. Starting last weekend, and continuing for these next three weekends, there will be a flyer in your bulletin that describes about the 2018 Cardinal s Appeal on both sides of the sheet of paper stuffed in the bulletin. If all of us give a little something to this year s Appeal, we will reach our $10,000 assessment; for this year only, it is an assessment because we were in Block 3 of the Renew + Rebuild Campaign; in the future years, it will return to being a goal. Normally, with the Annual Cardinal s Appeal, if we do not make our goal, we do not have to pay the balance from our reserves; this year only, if we do not make the assessment, we would have to pay the balance from our reserves. It is for that reason that my personal contribution to the Appeal for this year is $2,500 instead of my normal $1,500. You have always far exceeded the goal in the last six years but I wanted to take some of the pressure from you by giving more of my personal money to this year s Appeal. Please help me to save souls and save lives in this year s Appeal within the 10 counties of the Archdiocese of New York; if we exceed our assessment, we will be rebated 60% of whatever is over the $10,000 and that will be in the next fiscal year. ALL DAY ADORATION IS THIS SUNDAY. Presidents Day is this Monday and there are no Religious Ed. Classes. The Raffles for the $300 Gas Card and Dinner for 2 will continue to be sold this weekend and next weekend. The 20 Week Club Dinner is next Sunday at 1:00 P.M. at Anthony s. The Liturgy Meeting is Monday, Feb. 26 th at 6:30 P.M. in the Rectory. The Pot Luck Dinner Auction is Sat., March 3 rd. BLOOD DRIVE Will be held on Sunday, February 25th from 8 AM to 2 PM at St. Mary of the Snow Hall. You may call to schedule an appointment. A SIMPLY EXPLANATION OF BASEBALL This is a game played by two teams, one out the other in. The one that s in, sends players out one at a time, to see if they can get in before they get out. If they get out before they get in, they come in, but it doesn t count. If they get in before they get out it does count. When the ones out get three outs from the ones in before they get in without being out, the team that s out comes in and the team in goes out to get those going in out before they get in without being out. When both teams have been in and out nine times the game is over. The team with the most in without being out before coming in wins unless the ones in are equal. In which case, the last ones in go out to get the ones in out before they get in without being out. The game will end when each team has the same number of ins out but one team has more in without being out before coming in.

4 FEBRUARY 18, 2018 PRAYER FOR LIFE Jesus, Mary and Joseph we love you very much. Help us spiritually adopt and protect all human life from preborn to natural death. Amen. MAKING ALL THINGS NEW God our Father, through the Gospel and the Eucharist, You bring us together as Your Church in the Archdiocese of New York. Send us Your Holy Spirit, to enlighten our minds and guide our actions as we plan for the future of parish life in this Archdiocese. Help us learn new ways to strengthen and revitalize our parish communities, and to be good stewards of the spiritual and material gifts that sustain them. Bless our work, so that our parishes may continue to witness to the truth of the Gospel, and be a sign of Your love for all people. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. WHAT HAS GOD DONE? By Tom Norvell I want to borrow one sentence from David's 66th Psalm: "Come and listen, all you who fear God; let me tell you what he has done for me". He has shown me that dreams do come true and prayers are answered. He has shown me that there is always hope, even in the most hopeless situations. He has shown me that there is joy in being at home with my family. He has shown me that people are longing for a living relationship with Jesus Christ. He has shown me that whether your team wins or loses life goes on and life is good. He has shown me that beauty is found in my wife, in my children, in my friends, and in the ordinary events of a day. He has shown me that interruptions often lead to the most rewarding events of the day. He has shown me that days filled with sunshine, warm air, and blue skies are gifts from the Lord. He has shown me that days filled with dark clouds, cold air and rain are gifts from the Lord. He has shown me that marriage is proof that God was thinking of me when He created the World. He has shown me that children are sometimes the wisest people on earth. He has shown me that words can encourage or words can discourage, and that words that encourage are better. He has shown me that the change of the season's remind us of life is always changing and God is always active. He has shown me that the ocean can soothe the soul and refresh a weary spirit. He has shown me that mountains are a place of reflection, meditation, and renewal. He has shown me that He wants to have a relationship with me, and that He wants my life to full and abundant. He has shown me that a full and abundant life is possible when I spend time reflecting on the things that God has shown me. What has God done for you?
