PARISH APPRECIATION PICNIC The picnic will take place on September 9th at 1 PM under the pavilion at the Centerville Firehouse. You do not need to bring anything, it is entirely free. It is Fr. Bill s way of showing his appreciation to everyone in the parish, for all we do and for who we are. Denise Dudzic will take your reservations for the picnic, call CONTEMPLATIVE WALK We are developing a Contemplative Walk in the woods behind the parking lot (follow the wood-chip path from the rectory driveway). If anyone has an outdoor statue of a saint and would like to donate it to the walk, please contact Deacon Bob Cranston at or Fr. Bill at We only need about six statues at this point. Thank you for your donation and please come visit the walk. VOLUNTEER NEEDED St. John The Evangelist as well as other Churches in the Saugerties Council of Churches are sharing a booth at Hope Rocks, August 18th & 19th at Cantine Field. The booth will be open from 12 to 5 PM on Saturday and Sunday. We are looking for volunteers to represent St. John s by helping us to man the booth both days. It could be as little as one hour. FMI, call Marilyn Washer at INSTRUCTIONAL PRAYER MEETING- Will take place Sunday, August 5th at noon. The topic of discussion is Indulgences. Come learn more about your Catholic Faith. This discussion will be led by Fr. Bill. Question and Answer period to follow. INDECISION Is the key to flexibility! SPECIAL COLLECTION This weekend will be the annual Mission Cooperative Presentation by a missioner along with the second collection for his missionary territory that he works in. Our parish is please to welcome Father Brian P. Christensen from the Missionary Diocese of Rapid City, South Dakota. May we pray for all of his holy intentions. Thank you in advance for your generosity for the souls that he serves in South Dakota. ULTREYA- Join your Cursillo Community as we gather for Ultreya here at St. John s on August 9 th at 8:00 PM. Introduce the young ones in your family to Adoration of The Blessed Sacrament The Eucharist The True Presence of God. Featuring special prayers and songs for children. 3 THE EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME My Dearest Brothers and Sisters in the Good God, I want to ask you to save the date, please, for the Parish Appreciation Picnic, the sixth annual one, on Sunday, September 9 th, starting at 1:00 P.M. at the Centerville Firehouse. I wish to thank the fine folks at the firehouse for permitting us to use their grounds once again. I want to ask you to call Denise Dudzic at for your reservation for the picnic and I hope to see you there. It is completely at my personal expense as the least I can do to thank you for who you are and what you do for God, the parish, and yours truly. The Instructional Prayer Meeting is this Sunday, August 5 th, from Noon to 1:00 P.M. in the Chapel; the topic is Indulgences. I want to invite you to learn a little more about our Catholic Faith and Life. I wish to thank you, in advance, for welcoming Father Brian P. Christensen to our parish this weekend as the guest homilist on behalf of his missionary diocese of Rapid City, South Dakota as part of the annual Mission Cooperative program that every parish has during the year. I wish to thank you, in advance, for your generosity to the special second collection for the work his diocese does for the salvation of the souls who live there. The Safety Team Meeting will be this Monday evening, August 6 th, at 6:30 P.M. in the Church Hall. Our program is open to all children from Grades 1 st through 9 th grade. Please stop by the church or rectory office for a registration form or call Joan Corton at for more information. Our program will be meeting on Mondays from Grade 1-6 from 6:05 to 7:35 PM. Seventh and Eighth Graders will continue their program in modular form. Come join us! THE WELL THRIFT SHOP By selling clothing, small household items, toys, books, etc. at very low prices, we have been able to help individuals in need, as well as support local organizations. We depend on volunteers to sort merchandise (every weekday morning), and to sell items Wed., Thur. and Fri. afternoons from noon to 4:00 PM and on Saturdays from 10 to 2 PM. THE CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY- Will be prayed every Wednesday, here at St. John s at 3:00 PM. All are invited. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Catholic Charities Community Services of Ulster County is looking for volunteers to help with their food pantry which is open very Tuesday and Friday afternoon. Stocking and set-up start on pantry mornings at 10:30 and food is distributed from 1 to 4 PM. Clients can sign in from 12 to 3:30 PM. Volunteer hours vary and you can sign up for however long would be best for you. FMI, call WOMEN S CANCER SUPPORT GROUP- This group of women meets at St. John s in Woodstock at 7:00 PM on the last Thursday of each month. Spend a relaxing, spiritual time with other women sharing and supporting each other. JOKE A bank customer was waiting in line to cash a check when he developed a very loud case of hiccups. By the time he reached the teller s window, the hiccups had worsened. The teller took the customer s check and proceeded to run a computer verification of his account. After a minute, she looked up from her terminal with a frown and said that she would be unable to cash his check. Why not? the customer asked incredulously. I m sorry, sir, she replied, but our computer indicates that you do not have sufficient funds to cover this amount. As a matter of fact, she continued, our records show your account is overdrawn in excess of $1,000. It can t be! he cried. You have to be kidding! Yes, I am, the teller answered with a smile, counting out his cash. But you will notice that your hiccups are gone.
