3 F S O T J 16, 2017 The Hand of God: Beginning Monday, the daily Mass readings from the Book of Exodus are so colorful and insightful. Yes, God had his hand on Moses, and Moses was willing to do what God told him. Preservation of God s community took many very specific instructions. As it was then, so it is today. The Pharaohs of today try to keep us enslaved and content in habits that don t lead to the Promised Land. The Catholic way of life is in need of protection in our lives. Thank you to everyone for baking and helping out with Fr. French s repast. A special thanks to Joe and Frank from the Knights of Columbus. God s Blessings! ST. MARY S BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP will meet on Wednesday, July 19, at 6:00 p.m. in the school sitting area outside of the auditorium. Please use the Thompson St. entrance as this is the door that will be open for our meeting. Our meetings are open to anyone who is struggling with their grief after the loss of a loved one. Please feel free to join us for one of these informal meetings. Disaster Relief Collection At Bishop Scharfenberger s request, an emergency collection will be taken up the weekend of July 22/23 at all the masses to aid those devastated by the storms that began over the last few weeks throughout our diocese. This emergency collection is intended to cover needs created by current and future storms throughout our diocese in To donate, make your check payable to the parish (St. Mary s Church), and in the memo portion write 2017 Diocesanwide Storm Season. Our parish will then send one check to Catholic Charities, and 100% of the donations will go to respond to the needs of persons and families impacted by this year s storms. Tickets are $ Faith Formation: Why is In Vitro fertilization morally wrong? In vitrofertilization brings about new life in a petri dish. Several eggs are aspirated from the woman's ovary after she has taken a fertility drug which causes a number of eggs to mature at the same time. Semen is collected from the man, usually through masturbation. The egg and sperm are ultimately joined in a glass dish, where conception takes place and the new life is allowed to develop for several days before being implanted into the woman. Obviously, IVFeliminatesthe marriage act as the means of achieving pregnancy. The new life is engendered by a laboratory procedure performed by doctors. Not infrequently, "donor" eggs or sperm are used. This means that the genetic father or mother of the child could well be someone from outside the marriage. But even if the egg and sperm come from husband and wife, serious moral problems arise. In IVF, children are engendered through a technical process, subjected to "quality control," and eliminated if found "defective." Invariably several embryos are brought into existence; only those which show the greatest promise of growing to term are implanted in the womb. The others are simply discarded or used for experiments. This is a terrible offense against human life. One becomes desperate when faced with infertility and I found myself willing to do anything the doctors said,but the typical medical protocol is not conducive to a healthy marriage, healthy body or a healthy relationship with God. Thank God, I did not go as far as using IVF, but the medically unnecessary medications the doctors had me on left me with years of negative effects on my body. However, it was a reminder that our Church teaches the Truth and I would be wise to follow Church teaching from here on out! Once I gave my desire to God with prayer, we were blessed with the adoption of our son within 8 months! For instance, did you know that: Some medications must be taken on an empty stomach? Antacids can decrease absorption of some drugs? There are drugs that need to be taken before, with or after meals? Alcohol, milk products or grapefruit juice can affect the action of some drugs? Using diuretics ( water pill ) may require an intake of foods high in potassium such as bananas or oranges? Vitamin or herbal supplements can change drug action? Increasing or decreasing salt or water intake might be necessary? Never hesitate to ask your physician questions concerning your medications. Taking medication as directed by physician and pharmacist provides maximum benefits and can avoid problems. Most pharmacists will automatically give you written or verbal information on new medications. If necessary, ask the following questions: What is the name and strength of the medication? Which medical condition is the medication for? How should I take the medication? What are the common side effects of the medications? Does the medication interact with other nonprescription drugs that I have at home? Is it safe to drink alcoholic beverages with the medication? What should I do if I miss a dose? How should the medication be stored? Is a generic brand of the medication available? Can my prescription be refilled? How many times?
