Unsafe, Legal, & Not Rare The US Supreme Court has again nullified state laws that are enacted by local citizens. The court s decision of 6/27/16 permits abortions at Texas sites that offer less than standard care. (Dentists, veterinarians, and even butchers are subject to more scrutiny than are places where mothers abort their babies.) Our forebears fought for civil values. Now, it s our turn to pray and work for females to live their Baptized dignity, for them to claim respect for their own health. This weekend we celebrate our Declaration of Independence (from England, not from God). We hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness Bishop s Appeal Through this important Appeal, we follow the example of Christ to serve our brothers and sisters here in the Diocese of Albany. By joining together in stewardship, we proclaim our unity to all; thereby letting those who need us the most know that they are an important part of our Catholic family. Please be as generous as you possibly can in responding to the Bishop s Appeal. ST. MARY S BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP will meet on Wednesday, JULY 20, at 6:00 p.m. in the sitting area outside of the auditorium. Please use the Thompson St. entrance as this is the door that will be open for our meeting. Our meetings are open to anyone who is struggling with their grief after the loss of a loved one. Please feel free to join us for one of these informal meetings. If you have suffered a recent loss and are not quite ready to attend our meetings, please feel free to call Josephine with any questions or concerns or just to talk about your feelings at the phone number listed below. We also encourage you to invite anyone you know who has suffered the loss of a loved one to attend our meetings. Please note that anything we discuss either on the phone or at our meetings is held in the strictest confidence. 3 F S O T J 3, 2016 Annual Mission Coop Collection for the Church in Haiti Next weekend, July 9 & 10, our parish participates in the diocesan Mission Cooperative Plan, & we welcome Fr. Tom Hagan who works with the missions in Haiti. The Missionary Cooperative Plan assigns a mission group to every parish to speak about the work of our church in other parts of the world and to remind us that our church is fundamentally a Mission Church. Our diocesan mission office assigned the Diocese of Gonaives one of the poorest dioceses in Haiti serving 1 million Catholics to share with us news of how our church continues to help the poorest of the poor. The Church in Haiti is struggling to bring God s love to the many hurting people, and we can provide the comfort. In Haiti there are 10.9 million people in an area smaller than Maryland. 70% of these cannot read, & 85% live below the poverty level. In slum areas 4 out of 5 children do not reach the age of five, & nationally 1 in 3 children suffer from chronic malnutrition. The hurricanes in 2004 & 2008, along with the devastating January 12, 2010 earthquake & hurricane later that same year, have left Haiti severely damaged & in desperate need of our prayers & support. There are more than 200 small parishes in the Gonaives diocese but only 68 priests. The diocese provides nearly the majority of schooling & nutrition for several hundred thousand children. The priests, nuns and lay people who live & work in the diocese face tremendous challenges. Their work among the violence & savage poverty there is founded upon the Catholic social teachings of the dignity of human life & a preferential option for the poor. The Church in Gonaives stresses a clear ethic of life based on Catholic teaching that proclaims God s infinite & absolute love for us. Fr. Tom Hagan is a faithful volunteer for the Diocese of Gonaives who has been to Haiti many times, & visits parishes around the U.S. to share his experiences working with the Catholic missionaries there. We have many shawls,lap robes & baby blanketsif you are looking for a gift or you know someone who needs some TLC to help them thru treatments, grief, or any other need, we are here to help. Request forms are in the back of the church or the school side entrance. Just fill it out, put it in the box, and you will have it within a day or two. You will be able to pick them upby the altar rail on the school side. Amen. Health Ministry LEARN CPR YOU CAN DO IT! He gives power to those who are tired and worn out; he offers strength to the weak. Even youths will become exhausted, and young men will fall give up. But those who wait on the Lord will find new strength. They will fly high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:2931 (NLT) There are 500,000 deaths in US related to new and recurring coronary (heart) attacks. That means that every day 1,400 people die from a heart attack. Out of these 500,000 80% die outside the hospital setting and do not received any medical treatment after suffering heart attack. If these patients received CPR, this would save 200,000 per year or 550 lives per day. These numbers are staggering, and prove beyond any doubt that knowing CPR techniques in case of heart attack usually means a difference between life and death for the victim. If CPR is administered within first four minutes after the heart attack, the chancesof brain damage are virtually nonexistent. So, knowledge of CPR does not only save lives, but also allows victim to recover without sustaining any permanent damage. CardioPulmonary Resuscitation, commonly called CPR, combines rescue breathing (one person breathing into another person) and chest compression in to one lifesaving procedure. It is performed when a person has stopped breathing or a person's heart has stopped beating. When performed quickly enough, CPR can save lives in such emergencies as loss of consciousness, heart attacks or heart "arrests," electric shock, drowning, excessive bleeding, drug overdose, and other conditions in which there is no breathing or no pulse. The purpose of CPR is to bring oxygen to the victim's lungs and to keep blood circulating so oxygen gets to every part of the body. There are three general symptoms that warrant immediate administration of CPR: Victim is Unconscious; Victim is not Breathing; Victim has no Pulse. If one or more of those symptoms is present, perform CPR as soon as possible. It is ideal to be properly trained, but not all of us are. In an emergency do the following: First, CALL 911. Second PUMP Position hands in center of the chest and push down TWO INCHES, HARD and FAST 30 times, PUMP at 100 times/ minute but every 30 pumps give two breaths by tilting head, lifting chin, pinching nose and BLOW into mouth.
