World Mission Sunday Collection, weekend of Oct. 22/23 Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ, In his letter for this year s World Mission Sunday, Pope Francis writes, All peoples & cultures have the right to receive the message of salvation which is God s gift to every person. This is all the more necessary when we consider how many injustices, wars, & humanitarian crises still need resolution. Missionaries know from experience that the Gospel of forgiveness & mercy can bring joy & reconciliation, justice & peace. With these few words, our Holy Father describes the nature of the Church s evangelization efforts when it comes to fulfilling the command of Jesus to Go therefore & make disciples of all nations. World Mission Sunday affords each of us the opportunity to pray for missionaries & also to make an offering so that the Holy Father is able to provide for the needs of missionaries as they go about proclaiming in word & in action the Gospel of Mercy so close to the heart of Pope Francis. On Sunday, October 23, we will observe this year s World Mission Sunday. I ask that you pray even more intensely for those who respond to the Lord s call to go to the ends of the earth to proclaim the Gospel. I also ask that you be as generous as your means permit when the collection for World Mission Sunday is taken up in your parish church. May the Lord grant you every grace & peace. Faithfully yours in Christ, Edward B. Scharfenberger, Bishop of Albany Transforming Society: Thanks for signing letters to the American Medical Association to keep medical care in the hands of caring doctors and nurses. Another attempt was The Conscience Protection Act (H.R. 822) that passed nicely in the House of Reps., but stalled in the U.S. Senate. There was no chance of President Obama signing it. The poorest among us are intellectuals who try to make it impossible for Godly professionals to use a wellformed conscience. It behooves us to know the difference between what God wants and what serves evil. Removing God (religious freedom) from our society does indeed transform society. Please ponder the enclosed paper from the USCCB. Thanks to Fr. Kelly, Fr. Vivacqua, & Deacon Ron for all their help in making this year s Rosary Rally so special. Thanks also to Ann Van Derwerker, the cross bearertaylyn Markham, Colleen Hogan, & Veronica & Catherine Higgins. To Mary Beth Flatley for carrying the statue of Our Lady of Fatima, thanks. Lastly a big thank you to all who came & prayed the Rosary. I pray that we pleased Our Lady, & she will help our country. Attention: Families with Toddlers! Are you looking for a fun afternoon activity? Introducing: Masterpiece Mondays! Open to all young parishioners at St. Mary s Preschool Room 118, Monday, Oct.24, 1:30 pm 2:30 pm. 4 Sunday, October 23, 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time 9:30 am Josiah Daniel Etzel Mother & Family Sunday, October 30, 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time 9:30 am Josiah Daniel Etzel Mother & Family Joe Minarski Peg Minarski & Children Tuesday, November 1, All Saints Day (Holy Day of Obligation) 6:00 pm Josiah Daniel Etzel Mother & Family Today s second collection is for The Missions. On this World Mission Sunday, all of us are invited to "go out" as missionary disciples, each generously offering their talents, creativity, wisdom and experience in order to bring the message of God s tenderness and compassion to the entire human family. Your offering will help you to become a Missionary for God so His word can be spread to those who have not heard. Faith Formation: Sacred Heart of Jesus O most holy heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing, I adore you, I love you, and with lively sorrow for my sins I offer you this poor heart of mine. Make me humble, patient, pure and wholly obedient to your will. Grant,GoodJesus, that I may live in you and for you. Protect me in the midst of danger. Comfort me in my afflictions. Give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, yourblessingon all that I do, and thegraceof a holy death. Amen. To the left of the Crucifix on the altar, we have a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. What exactly is the Sacred Heart? The "Catechism of the Catholic Church, quotes Pope Pius XII's beautiful encyclical "Haurietis Aquas" (1956), states, "[Jesus] has loved us all with a human heart. For this reason, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, pierced by our sins and for our salvation, 'is quite rightly considered the chief sign and symbol of that... love with which the divine Redeemer continually loves the eternal Father and all human beings' without exception (No.478). To appreciate this rich symbolism of the heart, we must remember that in Judaism the word heart represented the core of the person. While recognized as the principle life organ, the heart was also considered the center of all spiritual activity. Here was the seat of all emotion, especially love. As the psalms express, God speaks to a person in his heart and there probes him. This notion of the heart is clear when we read the words of Deuteronomy 6:56: "Therefore, you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your strength. Take to heart these words which I enjoin on you today."ewtn.com Father William Saunders For more info on the Sacred Heart visit these websites: heartjesus recnum=6076 St. Mary s Community Service Group Please keep in mind that making baby Afghansfor Birthright is an ongoing parish project.any completed Afghans may be placed in the Food Pantry collection bins and they will be sorted out for Birthright. S. M M C, G, NY Health Ministry Healthy Mind Care I can do all things through Christ which strengthen me. ~ Philippians 4:13 Staying mentally sharp as you age has a lot to do with diet, exercise and lifestyle habits. The choices within your control are: regular exercise; eating hearthealthy foods and fats that reduce inflammation and encourage energy production; stimulating and challenging the brain; getting adequate sleep; finding ways to manage and reduce stress and staying socially connected. Conversely, there are many lifestyle factors that can kill brain cells or contribute to memory loss, including excessive alcohol and drug abuse, heavy cigarette smoking, head injuries, stroke, sleep deprivation, severe stress, vitamin D and B12 deficiency, illnesses such as depression, thyroid problems and reduced blood flow to the brain. The following is the prescription for Healthy Mind Lifestyle Choices: 1. EXERCISE DAILY Walk, dance, garden, park the car farther away, take the stairs. 2. EAT A HEALTHY DIET The Mediterranean diet is recommended vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, whole grains, fish, olive oil and limited dairy and meat. Add Omega3 fatty acid foods such as salmon, tuna and halibut for healthy brain maintenance. 3. GO TO BED Stay on a regular sleep schedule. Check with the doctor regarding your medications that might affect brain health. 4. STIMULATE THE MIND Social and mental stimulation delay mental decline and fortify brain connections. Some ideas might be to join a sewing, gardening or book club; work with a church group; take up golf or dancing, a painting or photography class; read; attend a lecture or concert; check out your public library and senior center for activities; try continuing education at the local community college; volunteer anywhere. 5. MANAGE STRESS Activities like tai chi, yoga and meditation help clear the mind and relieve stress. Nature is a natural stress reducer take advantage of state and national parks; visit the beach; go for a walk in the woods with a friend; birdwatch; and just inhale the fresh air! BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENINGS AFTER 9:30 a.m. MASS TODAY. Mass Intentions One of the greatest acts of charity is to pray for the living and the dead, and the greatest and most powerful prayer we have is the Mass. For that reason, all are encouraged to have Mass offered for our loved ones who have died, or for the living who have some need. Available dates are posted in the Social Hall on the wall in the rear corridor along with Mass intention forms. If you have any questions, please see Marie Farrington, Virginia Sawicki or Don Knuth. Anyone who did not have their picture taken for the Parish Journal can still be listed in this Journal by submitting any picture that they would like to use. Please contact Tom Liuzzo Tliuzzo@nycap.rr.com or Amanda Dickson dicksoaj191@gmail.comand we will arrange to get your picture and submit it to the Journal publishers. Please do not miss this opportunity andbe left out of this journal. Submit your photo ASAP. Thank you.' We thank you for your sacrificial offering of $912 for Sunday, Oct. 16. To cover our weekly expenses, we need $1,000.
