Restore the Church Build the Future is this year s theme for the Special Collection for the Catholic Church of Central & Eastern Europe. The Church in this region of the world continues to have great needs for its pastoral work. Your donations invest in future generations of Catholics: a gift of faith to the future. Proceeds from the Collection go directly to build churches and support scholarships for ministry formation, and they also support Catholic organizations that provide family support, food, shelter, medical care and religious education in the region. 3 P S M 20, 2018 A Healthier Future for Children: In two states, family life is going to be better. In Iowa, the lady governor has signed into law major protection for each unborn child. In Oklahoma, the protection is for adoption by a manwoman couple. The greatest gift from God is life as He creates it (Gen. 1:28). No one has a right to a child. There are many couples who are unable to conceive, and choose adoption from someone else s success. What hope do we have in NYS that each adopted child will be placed into a two oppositesex home? Or, that each child conceived is protected from abortion? When the general public gets serious with God s plan, laws can change. And, then come the challenges from Planned Parenthood Federation of America and other groups that claim to be profamily. St. Mary's 14th Annual Golf Tournament Join Fr. May is dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. Sr. Lucia of Fatima said there is no problem, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary. Mary asks parents to pray constantly for their children, consecrating them to her Immaculate Heart and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Pray the Rosary daily with and through Mary, seeking her help and protection, and asking for God s peace for the world. The Church in Central & Eastern Europe funds projects in 28 countries to build the pastoral capacity of the Church & to rebuild & restore the faith in the countries ravaged throughout history. The funds are also used to support seminaries, youth ministry, social service programs, pastoral centers, church construction & renovation, & Catholic communications projects. As you purchase your spring plants, please keep this in mind and thank them for their generosity! Faith Formation: What is Purgatory? Purgatory is a period of purification after death. When we die, our souls are judged immediately by Christ in what s called the Particular Judgment : Each man receives his eternal retribution in his immortal soul at the very moment of his death, in a particular judgment that refers his life to Christ: either entrance into the blessedness of heaven through a purification or immediately, or immediate and everlasting damnation. (Catechism, 1022) Don t think that Purgatory is anything like a second chance for those who have not won the reward of heaven. During our human life, we either accept or reject God s offer of divine grace. Once we die, our choice is definitive. We cannot change our mind after death. (Catechism, 1021) Heaven & hell are real. They re part of a viewpoint that s fully Catholic & Purgatory is simply a transitional state for those who have merited heaven but still have aspects of their souls that are not yet fully purified. Purgatory is where that purification happens after death. The souls in Purgatory are assured of salvation. They ve died in God s grace & friendship, & will end up in heaven. But they re not yet in a full state of holiness the holiness that s necessary to behold God face to face in heaven. (Catechism, 1030). beginning catholic.com Health Ministry: SHINGLES And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing. ~Luke 9:2 Shingles (herpes zoster) facts: Shingles, also called herpes zoster, is a painful skinrash. Shinglesis caused by reactivation of thevaricellazoster virus, the same virus that causeschickenpox. Older adults & individuals with a weakened immune system caused by certain diseases such as cancer or those taking steroids or immunosuppressive medications are at greatest risk for developingshingles. About 50% of all cases of shingles occur in adults 60 years of age or older. Psychological & emotional stressors are also thought to possibly contribute to the development of shingles, perhaps from the detrimental effects ofstresson the immune system & the person's health. Shingles symptoms& signs include: Onesided stabbingpain; tingling,itching, burning, or stinging sensation that precedes the appearance of therashby a few days; headache; fever&chills; nausea; body aches; & a fluidfilled blistering red rash, typically on the torso or face. Shingles is most often diagnosed by your doctors based on the appearance of the characteristic rash. Shingles can be treated with antiviral &painmedication. The prognosis for shingles is generally favorable, though some individuals can experience complications. The most common complication ispost herpetic neuralgia, which isnerve painafter the rash disappears. What is thecontagious periodfor shingles? The virus that causes shingles, the varicella zoster virus, can be transmitted from person to person by direct contact with the fluid from the active blistering rash. Therefore, susceptible individuals should avoid contact with people who have active shingles, especiallypregnantwomen who have never had chickenpox & immunocompromised individuals. It cannot be transmitted bycoughingorsneezing, & it is notcontagious before the blisters appear. Once the shingles rash has dried & developed crusting, it generally is not considered to be contagious. What are medicaltreatmentsfor shingles? Your doctor will discuss the best treatment options for your particular situation. Antiviraldrugsare used against the varicella zoster virus. These medications help shorten the course of the illness, decrease the severity of the illness, & hasten the healing of the skin lesions. They may also help prevent the potential complications sometimes encountered with shingles. Antiviral medications (Zovirax, Famvir or Valtrex) are most effective when started within 72 hours of the first appearance of the rash. Pain medication (Tylenol or Advil) can be used to help relieve the discomfort caused by the rash. Overthecounter antihistaminemedication such asbenadryl may help alleviate the localized itching. The use of acorticosteroidmedication, such asprednisone, is used only in select cases of complicated shingles, such as those with eye or ear involvement, & it should be used with concurrent antiviral therapy. Prednisone is not generally recommended in cases of uncomplicated shingles. There is avaccineavailable to help prevent shingles. What about the vaccine? There is a new more effective vaccine. Shingrix, a twodose vaccine recently developed (2017), was found to prevent shingles in more than 90% of patients who received it inclinicaltrials. Shingrix is recommended for healthy adults who are 50 years of age or older.talk to your doctor about getting the vaccine.
