Life in a family: it s a sacrifice, but a beautiful sacrifice. Love is like making pasta: you do it every day. Love within matrimony is a challenge, for the man and the woman. What s the biggest challenge for a man? To make his wife more a woman. More woman. That she grow as a woman. And what is the challenge for a woman? To make her husband more of a man. PreBaptism class for parents who will be having children baptized in August or September 2018 is Tuesday, August 7, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary s School (cafeteria entrance). Please call the office at to register. Please note this class is for parents who have never had a child baptized. Greetings from Grade 4! These last few months of the school year have been & continue to be filled with exciting adventures. In class we have been feverishly reading the novels A Series of Unfortunate Events (Lemony Snicket), then comparing the books to the Netflix video series. In Social Studies we recently participated in an Ellis Island Day experience. Dressing as immigrants from the 1800s, we had the opportunity to travel to Americacomplete with a boat ride in steerage, a medical examination, & being questioned by a legal inspector. Reflecting on this experience, we now have a better understanding of what it was like for our ancestors to start a whole new life in an entirely different place. Our final field trip of the year was at the N.Y. State Capitol & Museum. We were very excited to have the opportunity to meet Senator Jim Tedisco & Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh at the Million Dollar Staircase, as well as tour the capitol building! ~Miss Jojo Kindergarten News!!! It has been a very busy spring in Kindergarten! We visited the Brookside Museum for the Sheep to Shawl program. It was exciting to feel the sheep s wool & notice the lanolin on our hands. A sheep was sheared while it s little lamb waited patiently. The wool from one sheep filled an entire tarp. We followed the process all of the way until the finished woven products. We spent time with our Nursery School & Full Day PreK friends. We sang songs & worked together to complete crafts with a spring theme. We thank the DeFillipo family for their annual invitation to make our own ice cream cone at J.J. s Snack Bar! It is a yearly highlight & we appreciate their generosity. Our entire school participated in the crowning of the Blessed Mother. We processed around the church to gather together in the courtyard as we praised Mary. A bus trip to the VIA aquarium with our First Grade friends was a spring highlight!! We touched stingrays, sea stars and horseshoe crabs! We had a great Field Day! We worked together in different teams. The big kids helped the little kids during an action packed day. Competing with our brothers & sisters was an added bonus. We re looking forward to our Graduation & celebrating with our family at the Graduation picnic!

Your contributions will help defray the cost of special projects that are needed to maintain our Parish. One of the greatest acts of charity is to pray for the living and the dead, and the greatest and most powerful prayer we have is the Mass. For that reason, all are encouraged to have Mass offered for our loved ones who have died, or for the living who have some need. Available dates are posted in the Social Hall on the wall in the rear corridor along with Mass intention forms. If you have any questions, please see Marie Farrington, Virginia Sawicki or Don Knuth. Faith Formation: What is a sister or nun? A sister or nun is a woman who belongs to a religious order, or community. Many people use the wordnun interchangeablywith sister,but technically nuns are those who live a cloistered (or enclosed) monastic life; whereas sisters serve in an active ministry. After a period of preparation (called formation) sisters and nuns take lifelong vows. Usually they take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience that is, they promise to live simply, to live celibately and to follow the will of God through their community. What is the difference between a diocesan priest and a priest from a religious order? All priests are ordained to the priesthood through the Sacrament of Holy Orders. However, a man may choose to be a diocesan priest (sometimes called a secular priest) or a religious priest (or order priest). If he chooses to be a diocesan priest, then he enters the diocesan seminary system, and once ordained typically serves within his own diocese. He is appointed to his ministrymost often to a parish, as a parish priest. A diocesan priest is accountable to his bishop and the people he serves. If a man chooses religious priesthood, he joins a men's religious community (such as the Franciscans, Redemptorists, Marians...). While he may perform parish ministry, he generally serves in other ways, typically doing work related to the mission and ministries of his religious congregation. A religious priest is accountable to his major superior and the other men in his community for his religious life and his local bishop and the people he serves for his priestly duties. S. Psalm 38:2728 Alcohol & Drugs Impair Driving Ability in Many Ways Millions of people die each year due to alcohol & drugrelated motor vehicle accidents. Many people simply don t realize how much alcohol & drugs affect one s ability to operate a motor vehicle. Center for Disease Control & Prevention says that almost 30 people die each day from an alcoholimpaired driver. Using marijuana & cocaine can be linked to 20% of motor vehicle driver deaths in the U.S. Compounding the problem is that these drugs are often used in conjunction with alcohol. BAC or bloodalcohol concentration, measures the amount of alcohol that is in 100 milliliters of blood. In Canada & much of the U.S., the legal limit is.08 per cent. For a woman that is usually 2 drinks & for a male it is 4 drinks. But a person can still suffer side effects of alcohol consumption if there BAC is below the legal limit. Between.03 &.06 a person may experience mild euphoria, trouble concentrating, a relaxed feeling, talkativeness & decreased inhibition. Between.06 &.08 feelings may be dulled, peripheral vision can decrease, & drivers may have poorer depth perception & struggle to recover from glare. Many drugs can affect the body in ways that make it dangerous to drive. Some cold or allergy pills can impair driving ability because they cause drowsiness. Drugs that act on the brain, such as psychoactive drugs, antidepressants, sleeping medications, & antianxiety drugs, can impair reaction time, judgement & motor skills. Most medications that can prove dangerous while driving will carry a warning label that advises against driving or operating machinery. Illegal drugs have their own share of negative effects. Marijuana is one of the most prevalent illegal drugs involved in individuals fatally injured in driving accidents. Marijuana can cause reduced concentration, difficulty perceiving time & distance, poor speed control, inability to read signs, drowsiness, & distraction. Cocaine can mask fatigue & impair a person s ability to concentrate. Impulsive behaviors can lead to risktaking. This can be increased when mixed with alcohol. Amphetamines, above the normal doses, can interfere with concentration, impair vision & increase the driver s willingness to take risks. Consuming energy drinks that are mixed with alcohol may mask signs of impairment. Mixing caffeine & alcohol can have a similar effect. It is better to err on the side of caution & avoid the use of any drugs & alcohol if you plan on driving.
