Our parish needs baptismal garments for the many babies who are baptized here. The garments are a simple bib pattern. During the baptismal ceremony it is placed on the child and a prayer is said. St. Mary s Funeral Ministry is looking for new members. We would like to have representation at all of our funeral Masses to offer support and comfort to those who have lost a loved one. No prior experience is necessary just a loving, compassionate heart and the desire to help others in their time of grief. After The Fire is a non profit organization that helps Saratoga County residents who have suffered a loss due to fire. The organization provides family members with gift cards, personal care items, a night's stay at a participating hotel/motel, Red Cross referral, informational material, etc. After The Fire is a nonprofit organization that is comprised totally of muchneeded volunteers & exists entirely on donations. Meetings are held on the4th Tuesday of the month at 7 PM as follows: Feb., March, Oct. & Nov. at Eagle Matt Lee Fire House on Washington St. in Ballston Spa; April, May, June & Sept. at Halfmoon Town Hall on Lower Newtown Rd. in Halfmoon. Religious Education Registration for new students entering our religious ed program will be either Saturday, 9/9 from 10 noon or Wednesday, 9/13 from 6 8 pm. Please bring a copy of the new student's baptismal certificate. Classes for grades 15 are on Saturday morning... choice of two time slots either 8:30 9:30 or am. If your children were in the elementary program last year they automatically move up to the next grade level to the same time slot. You do not need to reregister them. If you need to change times please let us know. Classes for grades 67 are either on Sunday evenings from 67 pm or Wednesday evening from 7 8 pm. Grades 810 are either Sunday from 7:15 8:15 pm or Wednesday from 7 8 pm. Students in grades 610 will need to let us know what class they would like. Children are going to school. Now is the time to start thinking of family, friends & neighbors who may need a hug from you. What better way than a prayer shawl? Do you know someone who is sick oralone? May be someone having a baby or someone's birthday? PRAYERS SHAWLS COULD BE THE ANSWER... We have request forms at the main & school side entrances of church. Fill one out (we need all the info on the form). Within a week you will fine a brown bag with your name on it by the altar rail in front of St. Joseph's altar. There is no charge for the shawls, but any donations are appreciated to offset the cost of the yarn. We have wonderful knitters here at St. Mary's who donate there time & prayers to provide you with these wonderful gifts. M M C, G, NY Health Ministry: What to Do in a Lightning Storm So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunder & lightning flashes & a thick cloud upon the mountain & a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. ~Exodus 19:16 Most people think the odds of being struck by lightning are slim. However, lightning is actually the number two weather killer in the U.S., more than hurricanes & tornadoes combined, according to the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration. Here is what you can do to stay safe in a thunderstorm & lightning storm: Be aware of the signs of an oncoming thunder & lightning storm. Tall clouds with a cauliflower shape, dark skies & distant rumbles are all signs of an impending storm. If you see lightning, start counting until you hear a rumble of thunder. If that time is 30 seconds or less, the thunderstorm is close enough to be dangerous. Lightning can strike as far as 10 miles from the area where it is raining during a storm. Nowhere outside is completely safe. Seek a large, enclosed building whenever possible. The next best option is a car with a hard top. Stay inside & keep the windows up. It is the metal shell of the car that protects you, not the rubber tires. If you are inside, stay at least a few feet away from open windows, electrical items & outlets, & plumbing such as sinks & showers. Lightning can flow through these items & "jump" to a person. Never shower or bathe during a thunder storm. Use a cell or cordless phone instead of a land line. If lightning hits telephone lines, it can flow through the line to the telephone. If you are outside & cannot get inside, do not stand under a tree! Try to find a low spot away from any metal fences, pipes, trees, or tall objects. If you are swimming or boating & you hear distant rumbles, or see flashes of lightning, get to land as soon as possible. If you are in a boat & cannot get to shore, stay in the middle of the boat, or below, if possible. If your skin begins to tingle or your hair stands up, a lightning strike may be imminent. Crouch down on the balls of your feet with your feet close together. Do not put your hands on the ground. Do not lie down! You want to keep points of contact between yourself & the ground to a minimum. When someone is struck by lightning, he or she should get medical attention as soon as possible. Even if a person who was struck appears dead, he or she can often be revived with cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Once the electric charge has gone through one person, there is no residual effect that can be passed along to another person. Immediate injuries can include burns, wounds, nerve damage & fractures. According to NOAA, longterm symptoms are primarily neurological & can be difficult to diagnose. Symptoms include memory deficit, sleep disturbance, chronic pain & dizziness. Some lightning survivors have trouble processing information, are easily distracted & may even have personality changes.
