1 Sunday, January 21, 2018 Third Sunday after Epiphany Holy Communion January 21, :00 a.m. Service INTRODUCTION WELCOME TO EMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH CELEBRATING OUR 60 TH YEAR ON MARCH 16, 1958 Stories of the call to discipleship continue as the Time after Epiphany plays out the implications of our baptismal calling to show Christ to the world. Jesus begins proclaiming the good news and calling people to repentance right after John the Baptist is arrested for preaching in a similar way. Knowing that John was later executed, we see at the very outset the cost of discipleship. Still, the two sets of fisherman brothers leave everything they have known and worked for all their lives to follow Jesus and fish for people. PRELUDE Oh God, Beyond All Praising Holst/arr. Behnke WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS The assembly stands. CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who stretches out the heavens, who sends light to the nations, who gives breath to us all. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence for reflection and self-examination.

2 Loving God, we confess that we have turned from your way to follow our own ways. Forgive us for the times we have spoken or acted too quickly; we have not spoken or acted at all; we have hurt those closest to us; we have hurt those we have yet to know; we have thought more about ourselves than others; we have thought less of ourselves than we ought. Turn us around, and give us a fresh start, so that we can live again as your children. Even when we have done wrong, God makes us right. Even when we have messed up, God puts us together. God s love never runs out. God never tires of calling us beloved children. Hear God say to you now: Your sins are forgiven, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior. PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Almighty God, by grace alone you call us and accept us in your service. Strengthen us by your Spirit, and make us worthy of your call, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. 2

3 The assembly is seated. FIRST READING: Jonah 3:1 5, 10 (Please turn to page 960 in the Old Testament of your pew Bible). The book of Jonah is a comedy starring a reluctant prophet who is given a one-sentence message: Nineveh will be destroyed in forty days. Much to Jonah s dismay, the people of Nineveh repent. The point of the story is to get the reader to wrestle with the question On whom should God have mercy? The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 62: For God alone I wait in silence; truly, my hope is in God. 6 God alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold, so that I shall nev- er be shaken. 7 In God is my deliverance and my honor; God is my strong rock and my refuge. 8 Put your trust in God al- ways, O people, pour out your hearts before the one who is our refuge. R 9 Those of high degree are but a fleeting breath; those of low estate can- not be trusted. Placed on the scales together they weigh even less than a breath. 10 Put no trust in extortion; in robbery take no empty pride; though wealth increase, set not your heart upon it. 11 God has spoken once, twice have I heard it, that power be- longs to God. 12 Steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord, for you repay all according to their deeds. 4 SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 7:29 31 (Please turn to page 178 in the New Testament of your pew Bible). Paul does not disapprove of marriage or other human social institutions. He does, however, want Christians to live in the present in fervent anticipation of God s future, which even now has dawned through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The word of the Lord. Before Jesus calls his first disciples, he proclaims a message that becomes known as the gospel or good news from God. God is ready to rule our lives. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. *Or, "he descended into hell," another translation of this text in widespread use. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Confident that God our light and our salvation hears us when we pray, let us offer our prayers for the church, the world, and all people in need. Let us pray. 8 PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. By the leading of a star he was shown forth to all nations; in the waters of the Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son; and in the miracle of water turned to wine he revealed your glory. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE Holy One, the beginning and the end, the giver of life: Blessed are you for the birth of creation. Blessed are you in the darkness and in the light. Blessed are you for your promise to your people. Blessed are you in the prophets' hopes and dreams. Blessed are you for Mary's openness to your will. Blessed are you for your Son Jesus, the Word made flesh. 8

9 In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. With this bread and cup we remember your Word dwelling among us, full of grace and truth. We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection. We look with hope for his coming. Come, Lord Jesus. Holy God, we long for your Spirit. Come among us. Bless this meal. May your Word take flesh in us. Awaken your people. Fill us with your light. Bring the gift of peace on earth. Come, Holy Spirit. All praise and glory are yours, Holy One of Israel, Word of God incarnate, Power of the Most High, one God, now and forever. 9

10 THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. INVITATION TO COMMUNION We who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. Come. Be filled with light and life. COMMUNION When giving the bread and cup, the communion ministers say The body of Christ, given for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you. and each person may respond Invited to the Lord s Table are all baptized Christians who celebrate with us the Real Presence of Christ in the Sacrament. The Communion is administered by intinction, that is, the bread is handed to the communicant and the communicant dips the bread into the wine. If you are not able to take the wine, simply take the bread. Children are invited to come forward for a blessing. If you desire Communion, but are not able to come forward, please let an usher know. We ll bring it to you. If you do not wish to partake of the Sacrament, simply remain seated when your row is directed to come forward. 10

A BRIEF HISTORY OF EMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH On March 24, 1957, a group of 45 people attended the first service of Emmanuel Lutheran Church at the Naples Women s Club. At a service attended by 101 people at the Naples Theater on Sunday, March 16, 1958, Emmanuel was officially organized as a congregation of the United Lutheran Church in America. There were 57 adult charter members and 34 child members. 12
