5 Discipleship What s the fuss about Mary and the Rosary? As we continue through our Stewardship of Prayer season, I wanted to follow up my introduction of the Rosary with a little more explanation. I thank parishioner Rebecca Case for taking the time to write the following: Mary s Role: Leading Us to Her Son Mary has a special role in God s plan of salvation and is an excellent model for all Christians. Of all creatures, Mary has the unique privilege of being called Mother by Jesus Christ. What an amazing gift to be given to the humble Virgin of Nazareth! Some may ask why Catholics pray to Mary. The answer is simple. If a friend can ask, and I can ask them in return, to Pray for me, ( and we are both sinners), then why shouldn t we even more quickly turn to the sinless Mother of God to ask her to, Pray for us? The Gospel reveals to us how Mary prays and intercedes in faith. At Cana, Mary recognizes the needs of her friends and asks Jesus to help the new couple at their Wedding Feast. In return, Jesus honors his mother; even though it means the beginning of His public ministry that leads to His ultimate sacrifice on the Cross. One of the great Catholic apologist of our age, Scott Hahn explained devotion to Mary with these words: So we say, Well then, why give glory and honor and devotion to Mary? Because we do whatever Jesus tells us. And we do whatever Jesus does because the fundamental axiom of Christian Morality is the imitation of Christ, and he is best of best when it comes to being a son. Not only a Son of his heavenly Father, but a Son of his earthly mother. How Can I Develop a Devotion to the Blessed Mother at St. Rose? One of the many forms of devotion to Our Lady... the Rosary has been especially recommended by the Church. Countless favors have been bestowed on people through the Rosary. Our Lady of Lourdes and at Fatima both called for an increase in prayer of the Rosary, declaring it one of the conditions needed for World Peace. At St. Rose, we pray the Rosary as a community 30 minutes before each Mass. All are welcome to join in! Even if you have never prayed this beautiful prayer before, please come to Mass early and experience saying the Rosary with us. The feeling of peace, resting in the Lord s presence while chatting with His Mother, is something that cannot be described in words. You will have to see for yourself. Well said Rebecca!!!! Small Christian Communities Our last Small Christian Communities Kick-off retreat starts on February 17th. Parishioners from the Communities of Philippi and Corinth will be receiving invitation calls this week. All Parishioners Are Invited. Sign-ups after this week s Masses. This is your last opportunity to attend. Is God calling you to take a step in Faith? Is God calling you to meet and pray with your Neighbors? Our Lady of the Rosary The Battle of Lepanto was a five-hour naval battle between the main fleet of the Ottoman Empire and the fleet of the Holy League, a group of maritime states of southern European Catholic countries. It was fought on October 7, 1571, in the northern waters off the coast of Greece. The Ottoman Empire fleet was defeated by the Holy League. Pope Pius V knew that the forces of the Holy League were much smaller than the fleet of the Ottoman Empire. Consequently, the Pope called on all of Christian Europe to pray the Rosary for success against the Ottomans. He led a Rosary procession in Rome for this success. After the defeat of the Ottomans at Lepanto on October 7, he called for a feast day in honor of the defeat and called the day Our Lady of Victory. In 1573, Pope Gregory XIII changed the title of the feast to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. Then two centuries later Pope Clement XI extended the feast to all the Latin Rite, laid it in the Roman Catholic Calendar of Saints in 1716, and placed it on the first Sunday in October. When we celebrate Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, remember all the fallen soldiers of all the wars. Pray for peace and for the reign of Christ to bring all people into right relationships. How to Pray the Rosary: Using beads to count prayers is an ancient tradition, and not Unique to the Catholic Faith. The rosary as we know it today has evolved over time from its original loop of fifty beads marked out three times ( to account for 150 prayers representing all the psalms ) to its present configuration of five decades with some additional prayers. The rosary is begun by reciting the Apostles Creed while holding the cross that hangs from the loop. The Lord s Prayer is prayed on the first bead on the way up from the Cross to the loop joiner. Then three Hail Mary s are prayed on the next three beads ( often interpreted as prayers for an increase of faith, hope, and charity), followed by a Glory Be. Another Lord s Prayer opens the first decade, which continues with ten Hail Mary s and concludes with a Glory Be, prayed while holding the chain between the final Hail Mary of the decade and the next bead for the Lord s Prayer. The prayer and meditation of the five decades are directed to one of the mysteries of which there are four sets ( Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and
