2 Sacramental Preparation Baptism: All Baptisms are celebrated on the first Sunday of the month at 9:45 AM. The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Baptism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:45 AM. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active worship is required for two months prior to preparation. Haven t Received Your Sacrament on Schedule? Families of children in grades three and up who have been baptized but have not yet received any formal religious education, as well as those who have not been baptized, should contact the Parish Office for information on how to proceed. Initiation of Adults and Older Children: This is an extended formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or baptized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to become members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbaptized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish office for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years. Adult Confirmation: This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The program is a week program, with Confirmation being celebrated on the Solemnity of Pentecost. Please call the parish office for more details. Matrimony: Couples wishing to marry in Good Shepherd Parish are required to make initial arrangements at least one year in advance. Four sessions with the priest or deacon, as well as Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter take place during this year. Parish registration and active worship for at least two months are required before a date may be scheduled. Anointing of the Sick: Anyone who is seriously ill or unable to come to church for a length of time should contact the parish office to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick. Eucharistic Ministers bring Holy Communion to homebound parishioners every Sunday, and one of the priests will visit on the First Friday of each month. Please call the parish office to make arrangements. The Diocese of Metuchen provides Catholic priests to serve at all local hospitals. Holy Orders: If you are interested in learning more about the priesthood or religious life, contact the Vocations Office of the Diocese of Metuchen at , ext or by at vocations@diometuchen.org or visit Parish Registration: We welcome you to the Good Shepherd Parish Community! Please register at the Parish Office as soon as you are able to do so, and the staff will be more than happy to inform you about our parish and the opportunities we offer. Parish registration is required for religious education, celebration of all Sacraments and certification as a sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation. Regular Sunday worship with us indicates a practicing Catholic, not just parish registration. An assurance of family practice and raising children in the faith they seek is necessary for the sacraments of initiation and certification of sponsorship. 3 A Letter FROM OUR PASTOR: A whole lot going on this week, so here goes: Counting Down to Lent: The three Sundays prior to the beginning of Lent in the old liturgical calendar went by the names of Septuagesima, Sexigesima and Quinquigesima. It basically meant seventy, sixty and fifty days from Easter. Today is the first of those Sundays, Septuagesima. However, you realize quickly that these Sundays are not seventy, sixty and fifty days from Easter. However, they can serve a good purpose for us as we begin the countdown to Lent which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14 th. It s going to be a tough one this year, as it is a day of fast and abstinence on a day traditionally dedicated to fine dining and chocolate (believe it or not, someone has already asked me if a dispensation will be given for that day!) I ve traditionally used these three Sundays, both in preaching and in my letter to get the wheels turning in your mind as to how you will spend this Lent of Next weekend we will have a listing of what we ll be doing as a parish for this season. So keep an eye out and a heart open! Catholic Schools Week: This week is Catholic Schools Week, and the theme for 2018 is Catholic Schools Learn, Serve, Lead, Succeed. While I have not been teaching this year (something I miss terribly!), involvement with Perth Amboy Catholic is still uppermost in my mind. For information on Catholic Schools Week activities at PACS, please go to their website pacatholicschool.org, or call the school office for scheduling a tour or an interview. In addition to Perth Amboy Catholic, we have parishioners attending Ukranian Assumption School and St. James School in Woodbridge on the grammar school level, and on the high school level at Bishop Ahr in Edison, Union Catholic in Scotch Plains, Mother Seton in Clark, St. John Vianney in Holmdel and my alma mater (where I ll be celebrating the Catholic Schools Mass this week,) St. Joseph s in Metuchen. Speaking of Catholic Schools - One of the biggest challenges for many families is the tuition at Catholic Schools. Last weekend, we had the collection for the Foundation for Catholic Education of the Diocese (which is being revamped a bit this coming year.) Each year, the Foundation gives substantial grants to deserving students around the Diocese who might not otherwise be able to attend Catholic schools. A substantial number of Good Shepherd students receive tuition assistance through this fund the boys and girls you see serving at weekend Masses and who are involved in our music program and Youth Ministry activities. So if you haven t contributed to this yet, please consider doing so. In addition to that, through your generosity we also have our Good Shepherd Parish Scholarship. Each year we are able to give financial assistance to our students attending Catholic high school, as well as to graduating seniors. The two annual collections, as well as a portion of our annual Tricky Tray proceeds, as well as a substantial bequest several years back from the former Rosary Memorial Post of the Catholic War Veterans (who also endowed a scholarship at PACS) enables us to do this and I have to say that this is something we can be proud of as a parish! Of Candles and Throats: This Friday, February 2 nd is the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord, or Candlemas Day. At the beginning of the 8:00 Mass we will have the customary blessing of candles both those we use here in church and for home use as well. This feast comes forty days after Christmas, and in some traditions, this day marks the end of the Christmas Season (I still keep one small Nativity out until this day!) Feel free to bring your own candles to be blessed, and we will have a limited number of candles available for you to take home. Saturday, February 3 rd is the memorial of St. Blaise. A bishop in present day Turkey, he was credited with saving the life of a small boy who was choking on a fish bone. Because of this, he is the patron saint of those suffering from diseases of the throat. At the end of Mass next Saturday, the final blessing will be the customary blessing used for St. Blaise. Please note that we will not have the individual blessings this year. Our annual International Night is less than two weeks away Saturday, February 10 th. This is an event that continues to grow in popularity, but it s one that we need a good deal of food for. Thanks to all those who have already volunteered to make something this year there s still time to sign up, so please do so ASAP! Have You Made your Raffle Returns Yet? The highlight of the International Night is the drawing of our annual Big Money raffle. This is only one of three major fundraisers that we have all year, and your participation in it is the guarantee for its success. Last week, friendly reminders went out in the mail to those we haven t heard from yet, and I thank those of you who responded this past week! We re just about two weeks away from the drawing now, so I again need to ask your cooperation with this event, as we have a number of major projects that we d like to get done this Spring and the only way we can do so is if we have the funds from this raffle! Thanks once again! And it s time to start thinking about the Festa! We will have our first meeting for this year s Festa di Sant Antonio on Tuesday, February 6 th at 7:00 PM in Msgr. Gambino Hall. While I ve said it in the past, this year it is critical for us to get new, younger workers. Many of our senior parishioners can no longer do the work they once did for the Festa, and if we re going to continue having the Festa, we need new people to step up. If you re planning to attend the meeting, please call the Parish Office. And in conclusion. So far we only have ONE person signed up for the Lenten Soup and Bread dinners before Stations of the Cross (on Friday, March 16 th ). Any other takers for the other Fridays of Lent??? Again, please call the Parish Office if you can take one of these nights! Mass attendance on January 20/21 was 575. I told you I had a lot to say! Have a great week ahead and remember that regardless of what the groundhog says on Friday, there are still six weeks left of winter - and groundhogs are rodents, not meteorologists! Fr. They wondered about who he was. He spoke as though he knew the Father intimately. He did wondrous things...gave sight to the blind, healed people of their afflictions..."fixed" broken bodies. What must it have been like to have lived during the time that he lived? Would we too have asked, "Who is he?" What do we know of him today? We Christians believe that this same Jesus who freed the man of his blindness, who freed the man of his lameness, who freed the man with an unclean spirit, wishes to free each of us from those things that have power over our lives. He wishes to free us from any barriers that prevent us from following him more closely. If you, or someone you know, wish to know Jesus better and wish to see Jesus through the perspective of the Catholic Faith Family...come to an RCIA Inquiry Session. Inquiry sessions are open to anyone who is unbaptized, baptized into another Christian denomination, or baptized Catholic but has never received BOTH Sacraments of Confirmation AND Eucharist. Inquiry sessions DO NOT require a commitment to join the Catholic Faith. They are a vehicle for learning more about the Catholic Faith in order to make an informed decision about becoming a member of the Catholic family. For more information please contact the Parish Office Good Shepherd Parish 2018 Scholarship Application Good Shepherd Parish Scholarships are awarded to young men and women of our parish who give of themselves to their school, community and the parish. To date, the parish has awarded 56 scholarships to students who are attending a Catholic high school or starting college. Save the Date From Life Choices Resource Center Good Shepherd will be sponsoring a Baby Bottle Blessings fundraiser benefitting Life Choices Resource Center in Metuchen. Over the past year, babies have been saved, hearts changed and lives transformed. Life Choices serves women and families in our area by providing FREE services such as ultrasounds, pregnancy testing, counseling, material aid, adoption referrals and abortion recovery support. Pick up a baby bottle before or after mass during the weekend of February 4th. Fill it with your change, cash, or a check and return by February 17th.
