2 Sacramental Preparation Baptism: All Baptisms are celebrated on the first Sunday of the month at 9:45 AM. The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Baptism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:45 AM. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active worship is required for two months prior to preparation. Haven t Received Your Sacrament on Schedule? Families of children in grades three and up who have been baptized but have not yet received any formal religious education, as well as those who have not been baptized, should contact the Parish Office for information on how to proceed. Initiation of Adults and Older Children: This is an extended formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or baptized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to become members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbaptized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish office for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years. Adult Confirmation: This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The program is a week program, with Confirmation being celebrated on the Solemnity of Pentecost. Please call the parish office for more details. Matrimony: Couples wishing to marry in Good Shepherd Parish are required to make initial arrangements at least one year in advance. Four sessions with the priest or deacon, as well as Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter take place during this year. Parish registration and active worship for at least two months are required before a date may be scheduled. Anointing of the Sick: Anyone who is seriously ill or unable to come to church for a length of time should contact the parish office to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick. Eucharistic Ministers bring Holy Communion to homebound parishioners every Sunday, and one of the priests will visit on the First Friday of each month. Please call the parish office to make arrangements. The Diocese of Metuchen provides Catholic priests to serve at all local hospitals. Holy Orders: If you are interested in learning more about the priesthood or religious life, contact the Vocations Office of the Diocese of Metuchen at , ext or by at vocations@diometuchen.org or visit Parish Registration: We welcome you to the Good Shepherd Parish Community! Please register at the Parish Office as soon as you are able to do so, and the staff will be more than happy to inform you about our parish and the opportunities we offer. Parish registration is required for religious education, celebration of all Sacraments and certification as a sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation. Regular Sunday worship with us indicates a practicing Catholic, not just parish registration. An assurance of family practice and raising children in the faith they seek is necessary for the sacraments of initiation and certification of sponsorship. Please notify the parish office of any changes in phone number, address, address or when leaving the parish. 2 GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH FINANCIAL CORNER Collection Report 11/19/17 Weekly Human Development Purgatorial Mass Society If you would like to enroll a loved one for 2018, please call Maria at the Parish Office. 3 A Letter FROM OUR PASTOR: Due to an earlier than usual deadline for today s bulletin, this letter was actually written before you even read last weekend s letter. This will be the case for the next several weeks and now the pace of things will pick up in our lives and in our parish. With that said, here goes: Solemnity of Christ the King: The liturgical year ends today with the Solemnity of Christ the King. This year it may seem a bit odd that this feast falls on Thanksgiving weekend usually the First Sunday of Advent falls then. This feast was established by Pope Pius XI back in the 1920 s, and was originally celebrated on the last Sunday of October, but was moved to the last Sunday of the Church Year with the reforms of Vatican II. This feast was a Catholic response to all the political ideologies that were rampant in that time, and which were drawing many people away from the faith. Times haven t changed much, have they? We live in an increasingly secular culture where faith is being removed more and more from the public view. We don t have to look far to see this happening. Today s feast reminds us how we need to put Christ front and center in our lives, how we are all called to be the public face of Christ in our homes, our workplaces, our schools by the witness of our lives each day not just for an hour a week, but 24/7/365! Giving Tree: Our annual Christmas Giving Tree begins this weekend! This year we re doing something a bit different, as the beneficiaries of the Giving Tree will be needy students in primary schools across Perth Amboy, including Perth Amboy Catholic. Color coordinated boxes to match the tags will be out to accept your gifts. Again, every year I m impressed by the exceptional generosity of all of you with this project. More details can be found elsewhere in today s bulletin. Winter Raffle: Our Winter Raffle is now underway. The prizes will be drawn at the annual International Night, which will take place on Saturday, February 10, Raffle books have been mailed out to all parishioners this past week. While the proceeds from this have gone up each year since we separated the raffle from the Festa, we re still not seeing the return we d like to get (we d really like to see it raise as much as the Tricky Tray.) So when you get your raffle books, please make the effort to support this again, you have to be in it to win it! If you would like additional raffle books, please contact the Parish Office. Advent and Christmas Schedule: The complete schedule of Advent and Christmas liturgies and events will be in next Sunday s bulletin. As I mentioned some weeks back, due to the fact that Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday this year, there will be only ONE morning Mass for the Fourth Sunday of Advent on Sunday, December 24 th Speaking of Advent. How will you be spending this Advent, spiritually so? Will it be all Christmas parties and shopping and running around? What plans have you made for your spiritual enrichment? Next week we will have some additional Advent resources on our reading tables to help you make the most of this holy if hectic season. Finally This Thursday, November 30 th is the Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle. The brother of St. Peter, St. Andrew is often referred to as the First Called by Christ. Last year I visited one of the several places venerated as his tomb, in Amalfi, Italy, where some of his relics still remain. The College Seminary House at Seton Hall University is St. Andrew s Hall, and I d ask that you please remember in your prayers our own parishioner Luis DeJesus and his fellow seminarians there that day (we will also remember them with a sweet treat that I ll be sending on behalf of all of us!) Due to the earlier printing schedule, the Mass attendance for November 18/19 and this weekend will appear in next weekend s bulletin. Have a great week, Fr. Mike 3 For the month of November pray for those who need the support of this community of faith: Marie Acciani, Carlos Bendrell, Noah Dahlberg, Pat Dunn, Rose Celecki, Andrea Costantino, Chuck F., Tommy Fitzpatrick, Mike Gaffney, Carol George, Richard Hajzer, Tommy Jones, Arleen Kopin, Carol Magyar, Fr. John Morley, Lynn Munoz, Dianne Petro-Duncan, Megan Ortega, JoAnn Magyar, Raymond Magyar, Maryanne Mateuszyzyk, Danny Parker, Judy Liik, Connie & Vince Montuoro, Mary Murray, Catherine Paone, Christopher Paone, Julia Possert, Stephen Pry, Caroline Pry, Allen Puleio, Greg Rohrbacher, Kylie Silverio, Telofski Family, Dave & Louise Utter & Elsie Vega With respect to personal privacy only requests made by immediate family members will be taken. If you would like to add or continue to keep a name on our list: call the parish office at or Goodshepherd20@verizon.net. Please keep in mind that we pray for all the sick every day in the general intercessions of the Mass.
