2 Sacramental Preparation Baptism is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month at 1:00 PM at Most Holy Rosary Church, and at 9:00 AM on the third Sunday of the month at Holy Spirit. The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Baptism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:00 AM at Holy Spirit Church. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active worship is required for two months prior to preparation. Haven t Received Your Sacrament on Schedule? Families of children in grades three and up who have been baptized but have not yet received any formal religious education, as well as those who have not been baptized, should contact the Parish Office for information on how to proceed. Initiation of Adults and Older Children This is an extended formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or baptized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to become members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbaptized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish office for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years. Adult Confirmation This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The program is a week program, with Confirmation being celebrated on the Solemnity of Pentecost. Please call the parish office for more details. Matrimony: Couples wishing to marry in Good Shepherd parish are required to make initial arrangements at least one year in advance. Four sessions with the priest or deacon, as well as Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter take place during this year. Parish registration and active worship for at least two months are required before a date may be scheduled. Anointing of the Sick Anyone who is seriously ill or unable to come to church for a length of time should contact the parish office to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick. Eucharistic Ministers bring Holy Communion to homebound parishioners every Sunday, and one of the priests will visit on the First Friday of each month. Please call the parish office to make arrangements. The Diocese of Metuchen provides Catholic priests to serve at all local hospitals. Holy Orders: If you are interested in learning more about the priesthood or religious life, contact the Vocations Office of the Diocese of Metuchen at ,ext or by at vocations@diometuchen.org or visit 2 Parish Registration: We welcome you to the Good Shepherd Parish Community! Parish registration is required for religious education, celebration of all Sacraments and certification as a sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation. Regular Sunday worship with us indicates a practicing Catholic, not just parish registration. An assurance of family practice and raising children in the faith they seek is necessary for the sacraments of initiation and certification of sponsorship. 3 A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR: The last Sunday of September. Angels, Saints and Blesseds! The way the calendar falls this year makes this week one of my favorites of the liturgical year, as a lot of great feasts take place and this year, a first for us Catholics in New Jersey. So first, the Angels. Monday, September 29 th is the Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael - a favorite day as it s my primary patronal feast day; then on Thursday, October 2 nd, the Feast of the Guardian Angels, those angelic protectors that God has assigned to each of us. Angels have gotten quite popular in the past few years, but they ve gotten an ethereal, new-agey feel that is quite un- Biblical. Yet we still need to honor them and seek their intercession. Each weekday before Mass, we still say the beautiful prayer to St. Michael the Archangel ( St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle ) a prayer to him that we need especially in the trouble filled world we live in. On the memorial to the Guardian Angels, I traditionally end the Prayer of the Faithful at Mass that day with the prayer to our Guardian Angel which was one of the first prayers many of us learned as children. Now on to the Saints: Tuesday the 30 th, we honor St. Jerome, a 4 th century monk who lived in Bethlehem, and who gave the Church its oldest Latin translation of the Bible, what we call the Vulgate. He coined the phrase Ignorance of the Bible is ignorance of Christ. A good reminder to us all about the importance of learning and knowing Scripture. Wednesday, October 1 st is the memorial of St. Therese of the Child Jesus the Little Flower whose popularity after her death at age 24 in 1897 led to her canonization barely twenty eight years later and a saint whose popularity continues to grow. Please note that this Wednesday only, we will have Novena Prayers to St. Therese in place of our regular. We will also have the veneration of her relic after Mass that day. Then Saturday, October 4 th marks the memorial of St. Francis of Assisi, still one of the most popular of saints. We will hold the customary Blessing of Pets on Sunday, October 5 th at 1:30 PM in the plaza area at Most Holy Rosary. Finally, Blesseds: This Saturday, October 4 th will see the Beatification (the last step before a person is named a saint) of Sister Miriam Theresa Demjanovich, a Sister of Charity of St. Elizabeth a religious whose writings have often been compared to those of St. Therese, the Little Flower. Sister Miriam Theresa was born in 1901 and raised in Bayonne and entered the Sisters of Charity after attending the College of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station. She died in Elizabeth, N.J. in 1927 at the age of 26, a few days after undergoing an appendectomy. The Beatification Mass for Blessed Miriam Theresa will be held at the Cathedral-Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, the first time ever that a Beatification Mass will take place in the United States for the first native of New Jersey to be beatified. (Historic note: while she is buried in the chapel at St. Elizabeth s College which is in the Diocese of Paterson, that Diocese did not exist at the time of her death, which is why the Beatification Mass is being held in Newark.) It is an historic day for the Catholic Church of New Jersey and for the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth, of which Sister Beverly Policastro is a member. Barring any last minute emergencies, I will be at the Beatification Mass this Saturday morning. I will have more about Sister Miriam Theresa in the coming weeks however, now we Catholics in New Jersey have one of our own whose prayerful intercession we can turn to - the miracle attributed to her that led to her beatification was the healing of a small boy (also from New Jersey) who had gone blind due to macular degeneration in the early 1960 s. Blessed Miriam Theresa, pray for us! Time To Eat: The Rosary Altar Society Communion Breakfast is NEXT Sunday, October 5 th right after the 8:00 AM Mass. The Holy Name Pasta Dinner is on Saturday, October 11 th. Tickets for these events are also available. The food is always good at both of these events, and both are major fundrais- please pray for those who need For the month of September ers for these organizations, so please support one or both of the support of this community of faith: them! Thanksgiving Day Friendship Meal: We had our initial meeting this past Thursday, and enthusiasm was high regarding this project. Our next planning meeting will be on Monday, October 13 th at 7:00 PM. 6 Collect-A- Million Club The Perth Amboy Catholic Schools have teamed up with the Ronald McDonald House of New Brunswick on the Pop Tab Collect-A-Million Club. The tabs provide a tremendous source of charitable revenue for the Ronald McDonald House. The aluminum from pop tab rings is taken to the local recycling station where it is weighed and cashed in by the pound. The money netted is used to assist the House with operational expenses such as household supplies and utilities as well as to waive the fee for those families in need of financial support. We hope we can count on your support!! Please place your collected tabs in the receptacles at both worship sites. Thank you for your part in helping families whose children require care at an area hospital. This is an ongoing collection.
