2 Sacramental Preparation Baptism: All Baptisms are celebrated on the first Sunday of the month at 12noon. The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Baptism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:45 AM. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active worship is required for two months prior to preparation. Haven t Received Your Sacrament on Schedule? Families of children in grades three and up who have been baptized but have not yet received any formal religious education, as well as those who have not been baptized, should contact the Parish Office for information on how to proceed. Initiation of Adults and Older Children: This is an extended formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or baptized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to become members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbaptized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish office for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years. Adult Confirmation: This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The program is a week program, with Confirmation being celebrated on the Solemnity of Pentecost. Please call the parish office for more details. Matrimony: Couples wishing to marry in Good Shepherd Parish are required to make initial arrangements at least one year in advance. Four sessions with the priest or deacon, as well as Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter take place during this year. Parish registration and active worship for at least two months are required before a date may be scheduled. Anointing of the Sick: Anyone who is seriously ill or unable to come to church for a length of time should contact the parish office to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick. Eucharistic Ministers bring Holy Communion to homebound parishioners every Sunday, and one of the priests will visit on the First Friday of each month. Please call the parish office to make arrangements. The Diocese of Metuchen provides Catholic priests to serve at all local hospitals. Holy Orders: If you are interested in learning more about the priesthood or religious life, contact the Vocations Office of the Diocese of Metuchen at , ext or by at vocations@diometuchen.org or visit Parish Registration: We welcome you to the Good Shepherd Parish Community! Please register at the Parish Office as soon as you are able to do so, and the staff will be more than happy to inform you about our parish and the opportunities we offer. Parish registration is required for religious education, celebration of all Sacraments and certification as a sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation. Regular Sunday worship with us indicates a practicing Catholic, not just parish registration. An assurance of family practice and raising children in the faith they seek is necessary for the sacraments of initiation and certification of sponsorship. This includes a large attractive card for you to give to the family when a loved one passes away. New enrollments will be listed in the bulletin once a month. At every First Friday Morning Mass the names of those enrolled for that month will be placed on the Altar and will remain there for one year. Please note the names will not be read during Mass. 3 It is good for us to be here Saint Peter s words in today s gospel speak so much to us as we enter into this second full week of Lent. It was an early belief in the Church that the Transfiguration of Jesus took place forty days before Good Friday hence the placement of today s gospel passage. Lent is a time when we allow the transfiguring light of Christ to shine onto our lives: to affirm that which is good, and to bring to light those dark areas that we need to eliminate. Now that we ve had a full week of extra light at the end of the day and especially as Lent progresses - today gives us the opportunity to stop to think: How have I allowed Christ s transfiguring light to change my life so far this season? And then, the other challenge: How am I bringing the light of Jesus to transfigure the world through my words and actions each day? Feasting This Week: Usually we ll get a phone call or two asking about eating meat on St. Patrick s Day which we celebrate today. No problem since it s a Sunday we can all enjoy celebrating this day! Then this Tuesday, an even greater celebration, the Solemnity of Saint Joseph. This is one of two days in the season of Lent when the Glory to God is said or sung and white vestments are worn for Mass. Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, foster father of Our Lord, Patron of the Universal Church, patron of a holy death a lot to celebrate! An Italian tradition is the St. Joseph Table, a festive meal where breadcrumbs (resembling sawdust St. Joseph was a carpenter, after all!) replaces the grated cheese on pasta, and a rich pastry or zeppoles (I usually get both, and I m looking forward to them!) known as St. Joseph s pastries are served. It s a great day to honor our own fathers, and to pray for St. Joseph s intercession on our Church and on our families as well as to lighten up a bit on our Lenten austerities. I hope many of you will join us for Mass on Tuesday morning as we honor this great Saint, and as we honor one of the great missionaries of the Church today! La Fhe ile Pa draig Shona Buona Festa di San Giuseppe! Mondays After Mass On Monday evenings following the 7:00 PM Mass we ll be having a brief presentation (about minutes) on a variety of topics. Our second one will be tomorrow evening, March 18th and is on a topic that s gotten a lot of press time: immigration. Deacon Mickey and Colleen Coppola will be doing a presentation on the mission trip they recently made to southern Texas where they worked with immigrants coming into our country from South America. It promises to be a very interesting and eye opening presentation, so don t miss it. These sessions will be held in the church Bishop s Annual Appeal: Thank You to those who have already responded to the 2019 Bishop s Annual Appeal. As of March 8th, 65 parish families have pledged $10,606 toward our goal of $24,000. This represents 44.2% of our goal! A reminder that once we reach our goal, we receive a rebate of 50% of the extra funds pledged and through your generosity we have exceeded our goal the past two years. Your support of the Bishop s Annual Appeal helps in the formation of our deacons and seminarians, the various programs of Catholic Charities and a whole lot more! In the spirit of sacrifice this Lent, I encourage you to make a gift to this year s Bishop s Annual Appeal. No matter how large or small, you can make a difference. The video of the work of the Bishop s Annual Appeal is available for you to watch on our parish Facebook page, so please check it out! If you have not yet pledged, This weekend is the In-Pew Appeal. Envelopes will be available for you to fill out prior to the collection at all Masses. Again, thanks for your support! Lenten Soup and Bread Dinners: Join us at 6:00 on Friday in Msgr. Gambino Hall for a bowl of delicious homemade soup and bread before attending Stations of the Cross. All donations we receive those evenings are donated to Catholic Relief Services as a part of our participation in Operation Rice Bowl. City Wide Pro-Life Rally: Next Sunday, March 24th the vigil of the Solemnity of the Annunciation of Our Lord - all are invited to attend a city-wide Pro-Life Rally at the corner of Wilson and Market Streets in Perth Amboy. There will be prayers, songs and testimonies given there, and then all will walk to Our Lady of Fatima Church to attend the 5:30 PM Mass there. Tickets are available for the Altar Rosary Society Fish and Chicken Fry (by Thistle of Lyndhurst) on Wednesday, March 27 th and the Holy Name Communion Breakfast on April 7 th. The food is always good, so please support these events! Mass attendance on Ash Wednesday was 423, and 500 on March 9/10. Don t forget to make the most of this great season of grace! Fr. 5 2019 Bishop s Annual Appeal Help Build a Civilization of Love This weekend, parishes throughout the Diocese of Metuchen are celebrating Bishop s Annual Appeal In-Pew Weekend. Our goal is for every family to participate. Every gift, no matter the size, is important and greatly appreciated. Together, we are working to become kindling that is set a lame by the Holy Spirit, allowing God s love and power to burn more brightly here in the Diocese of Metuchen. Thank you for actively participating in this mission by your inancial support. To date, the Development Office has received pledges totaling $10, and payments totaling $ 9, from 65 parishioners. This represents 44.2% of our $24, goal. Thank you for your efforts!!! LENTEN INSTRUCTIONS-2019 So that the Diocese of Metuchen may be spiritually one in a common observance of Lent, the following days of fast and abstinence are to be observed by all Catholics of the Diocese who enjoy the blessings of good health: 1. The days of fast and abstinence are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 2. All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. 3. From the Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday until the celebration of the Easter Vigil on the evening of Holy Saturday, the Easter fast should be observed so that, with uplifted and welcoming hearts, we may be ready to celebrate the joys of the Resurrection. This ancient tradition, intimately connected with the Rites of Holy Week and the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, is encouraged, especially in those places baptizing catechumens at the Easter Vigil. The obligation to fast applies only to Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59. To fast in the Catholic tradition means to limit oneself to one full meal during the day so as to experience hunger. The obligation of abstinence affects all Catholics who have reached the age of 14. Abstinence in the Catholic tradition means to abstain from meat and all meat products. The obligation of fast and abstinence, as a whole, is a serious obligation. While failure to observe any penitential day in itself may not be considered serious, the failure to observe any penitential days at all, or a substantial number of them without good cause, would be considered a grave matter. Those unable to abstain for a valid reason on any given Friday of Lent are asked to perform some other penitential act, or to abstain on another day. St. Andrew s Healing Hearts Bereavement Group 244 Avenel St., Avenel New Jersey will be starting an eight week group session on Thursday, March 21st and will run through May 9th. 6 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS: Our Next Regular Class is on March 30th Due to the lack of heat in the Perth Amboy Catholic Building all classes will continue in our Church Hall of Msgr. Gambino at 625 Florida Grove Rd. (downstairs from our church) until further notice. Dates may change to coordinate with our Parish Activities. Please check here weekly for changes or updates. All parents were notified by . If you were not notified please contact our Parish Office to update our records. Children registered in our program are required to attend all special sessions in preparation for First Communion and Confirmation. This includes all 8th level registered Catholic School students. RITE OF ELECTION On the first Sunday of Lent, in every diocese throughout the world, Candidates celebrate with their Bishop, the Rite of Calling our Candidates to Continuing Conversion. Candidate already baptized (Darlese Martinez, Evan Martinez, Julien Rodriguez & April Taveras). Their journey to Reception into the Catholic Church has been a gradual process which has taken place within this parish. The Rite of Election, for Rite of Calling Candidates To Continuing Conversion for the candidates is one of the various steps in that process and it marks the end of the catechumenate phase and the beginning of the next phase, called purification and enlightenment; a more intense preparation for the sacraments which coincides with the Lenten Season. They will be received into the Catholic Church and receive Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil on April 20th. We invite to you to support them in prayer by becoming a SPIRITUAL SPONSOR. Please take one of the Prayer Cards for the candidates that will be distributed at every Mass on and after Ash Wednesday. Each prayer card has the name of one of the candidates. We invite you to become a Spiritual Sponsor for the candidate whose name appears on the prayer card you have selected. These candidates need our prayers, encouragement, support, etc., as they enter the final period of their preparation to receive the Sacraments of Initiation. A nice way to show your support is to drop them a note, or write words of encouragement on the back, telling them that you are praying for them. Please put their name of the envelope, c/o RCIA, and drop it off at the Rectory, or in the second collection basket at any of the Masses during Lent. CATHOLIC SCHOOL TUITION ASSISTANCE ONLINE APPLICATION PROCESS OPEN Families interested in applying for tuition assistance to attend an eligible Diocese of Metuchen Catholic elementary or high school may do so now. Tags for boys and girls, ages 3-5, will be available at the rear of the church beginning Saturday, March 9 th and must be returned by noon on Sunday, April 7 th. Buy or make a basket of goodies. Wrap it, put the tag on the wrapped basket so that the name is visible and return it to the tables in the rear of the church. K of C All you can Eat Lenten Linguini Dinners (Our Lady of Peace Knights of Columbus Council #9199) of Fords is sponsoring its annual All you can Eat Linguini Dinner every Friday during Lent, except good Friday. 5:30pm - 7:30pm in the parish hall below the church. Cost $10 for adults, $9 for senior citizens(62+) $5for children under 12. Under 5 are free. Special family price $20.00 (Eat in only) No reservation are necessary and take-out is available.
