The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Baptism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:00 AM at Holy Spirit Church. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active worship is required for two months prior to preparation. Haven t Received Your Sacrament on Schedule? Families of children in grades three and up who have been baptized but have not yet received any formal religious education, as well as those who have not been baptized, should contact the Parish Office for information on how to proceed. Initiation of Adults and Older Children: This is an extended formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or baptized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to become members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbaptized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish office for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years. Adult Confirmation: This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation. 3 A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR: A lot to talk about today some of which may not be easy reading Last Friday afternoon the old Hebrew National hot dog commercial popped into my mind. You remember the one? There was Uncle Sam, all decked out in red, white and blue, holding a hot dog. And as the commercial went on, it talked about all other hot dogs. And it ended with that line: We re kosher and we have to answer to an even higher authority as the heavens were shown. We answer to an even higher authority. We do: we answer, ultimately, to God. Every week in the Creed, we say these words: I believe that he (Jesus) will come again to judge the living and the dead. Jesus as judge: Just us and him, one on one, going over what we have done and what we have failed to do. Maybe not an image of Jesus that we like to think about: we like him petting cute baby lambs and patting tots on the head. Yet the image of the Pantocrater. The judge, is a strong one in Christian art (think of the huge mosaic in the National Shrine in Washington D.C.) And as we read the Old Testament (and the New as well,) over and over and over again we see the people of Israel thinking that, since they were the Chosen People, that they could go off and do whatever they pleased. And so often, they paid for it dearly. Trouble followed them like gum on the soles of your shoes. This Independence Day weekend, as we celebrate our national freedom, we are at a crossroads. The religious liberty that our forebearers enshrined as a hallmark of our nation is threatened in a way that it has not been before. Last Sunday, in the Diocese of Arlington Virginia, a program was held with a rather ominous title: Religious Liberty For How Long: How to Prepare Spiritually for the Coming Persecution. Rather strong stuff. Yet we have to face facts. It could happen. It is, indeed, already starting to happen. People are being persecuted for their religious beliefs. And not in some foreign country, but right here in the land that we love. Churches could be faced with the possible loss of tax exempt status which could close us up. Clergy could be fined and even jailed for their preaching. The days of the Going My Way deference to the Church and clergy are going, if not quite gone (a priest I know who s stationed at a parish in Manhattan was spit on last Sunday on his way to church!) And we need to realize that. And we need to pray every day that the religious liberty we treasure so much remains that way and in the midst of all the trials that we may face, to remember that we indeed do answer to an even higher authority! May God help our country, and keep us all firm in the witness of our faith! Vacation Bible School: Our first ever VBS Expedition Everest is this week! A whole lot of effort has gone into making this week a special one for our younger parishioners, and I m looking forward to this week myself. So Thank You to all those who are making this possible! Also, our VBS Wrap Up will take place this Friday evening, at which time our campers will entertain us with songs they learned this week all in the contest of our annual parish Ice Cream Social, graciously hosted by the Altar Rosary Society! So please join us in Msgr. Gambino Hall for that! Festa Wrap Up: Once again, our annual Festa was a big success, bringing in $13,750. Thank You all again for your support of this major Spring fundraiser. There is an insert in today s bulletin with more details. Annual Mission Appeal: Next weekend, Brother Robert Ziobro, SC, a Brother of the Sacred Heart will be here to speak at all Masses as a part of our diocesan Mission Cooperative Plan. Brother Robert (who was my freshman religion teacher at St. Joseph s High School more years ago than either of us would like to admit!) will be speaking about his Order s teaching apostolate in Africa. The second collection next weekend is for the Mission Cooperative Plan. Please make all checks payable to Good Shepherd Parish we will issue one check to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart from the parish once the collection is totaled. Thank You once again for your generosity. Again, please remember in your prayers the soul of Msgr. J. Nevin Kennedy, a retired priest of our Diocese who passed away last Saturday. As a young priest, he was stationed at Holy Spirit during the 1960 s, and as a new seminarian, I was assigned to Blessed Sacrament in Martinsville, where he was then the pastor. A few years back, when another one of our retired priests came to celebrate Mass at Holy Spirit, he told me that Monsignor s eyes lit up when he said he was coming here, and he was delighted that so many of you remembered him so fondly! Also please remember a good friend of mine, Fr. Steve Carey, from the Archdiocese of Newark. He s beginning a six month sabbatical this week that will take him on the Camino to Compostela in Spain, then as a volunteer in Lourdes, finally ending up at the sabbatical program at the North American College in Rome for three months (Msgr. Charlie Cicerale from St. James in Woodbridge will be at this program as well!) Many of you have met Fr. Steve over the years, and I ll miss him being around and when he gets back in December, he already has his new parish assignment waiting for him! Mass attendance on June 27/28 was 620. Have a great week ahead, Fr. Mike 3 For the month of July pray for those who need the support of this community of faith: Mary Murray, Anna Gironda, Andrea Costantino, Greg Rohrbacher, Maris DeJesus, Filbert Maez, Sueann Tarantino, Janet Anne Dwyer, Shirley Barbieri, David Utter, Catherine Suhay, Carmen Collura, Baby Seraphina, Chuck F., Lillian Estok, Valerie Breyta, Tom Bromirski, Lynn Munoz, Carol Magyar, JoAnn Magyar, Dorothy Maez, Rose Morley, Maryann Petrick, Mike & Kate Adda, Chris Hankerson, William Narvaez, Christopher Paone, Judy Smegelski, William Sienko, Baby Christopher Hernandez, Dan Alvarez, Telofski Family, Elsie Vega, Arnold Jasper, Connie & Vince Montuoro, Drew Horvat, Alexander Simon, Chris Johnson, Nicole Honkisz, Esidore Maey, Nancy Weber, John Zur, Mary Martini, Robert Durso, Barbara White, Ria Orsini, Baby Zachary, Natalie Ulrich, Christian Nunez, Carolyn Tarantino, Gene Jacob, Danny Parker, Bill Karvalis, Sr. Hortensia Diaz, Joey Nemeth, Baby Jael Maldonado, Jerry Disilverstro, Dee Ziemba, Robert (Bob) Pincelli, Nicholas Folfa, Diane Petro Duncan, Tom Kenjon, Heather Gondek, Rosemary Kelesi, Stephen Pry, Carol George, Paul Halek, Nancy Milochik, Rose Celecki, Braden Cruz, Baby M, Ashelyn Polonia, Carmen Titolo, Patricia Kupst, Joann Zamelio, Megan Ortega, Rigoberto Diffoot, Dan & Kathy Balinski, Michael Estok Jr., Arleen Kopin, William Moriarty, Carolyn Duane, Fr. Like so many of the prophets of old, Jesus and his message were rejected by those closest to him. It is Jesus' teachings, the words he utters that provoke such reactions. Sometimes one get nervous about discussing faith with someone close who is not of that faith because we are all afraid of the rejection that Jesus experienced. Invite your relative or your friend to an RCIA Inquiry Session. Inquiry Sessions do not ask for commitments. Inquiry sessions are a place to ask questions about God or about the Catholic Faith. Inquiry Sessions are opened to anyone who is unbaptized, baptized into another Christian Denomination or baptized Catholic but has not received BOTH sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. 7 Dear Friends, Join the Diocese of Metuchen delegation for this historic first visit of Pope Francis to the United States The Diocese of Metuchen invites you to participate in a pilgrimage to Philadelphia for the Mass to be celebrated there by Pope Francis on September 27, The Holy Father announced last November that he will come to Philadelphia for the eighth World Meeting of Families being held there. He will celebrate a public Mass with a million or more participants on Sunday, September 27 on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, in full view of the crowds arrayed from the museum down the Ben Franklin Parkway. No tickets are required for the Mass. No general seating will be available. The Mass is a standing event. The Diocese has made arrangements for bus transportation from various locations throughout the diocese. A number of parishes/groups are also running bus trips to the Papal Mass. The Papal Mass is tentatively scheduled for 4 pm. The exact schedule is not yet available from the event planners in Philadelphia, but we anticipate very early departure times. Once we have a clear picture of the number of people who want to participate from each site, we will assign bus coordinators and send confirmation materials with precise details. Prayer and reflection resources will also be provided to enable pilgrims to share a common experience as the Diocesan Church in preparation for and on the day of this special event. The round trip bus reservation and pilgrimage package will be approximately $55 per person. Each participant is responsible for their own meal costs on that day and also any train/shuttle expenses from the parking lot to the event site and back. Pilgrims should be physically fit and prepared to walk several miles. Reservations for bus seats are limited and will be accepted on a "first-come first-served" basis. For those interested in reserving a bus seat, you may do so starting on July 8, 2015 using the preferred online method by visiting: Parishioners in the Diocese of Metuchen will be given priority in the reservation process. Those who are from outside the Diocese of Metuchen will be placed on a waiting list and will be contacted if seats become available. You may also register via phone by calling ext during the hours of 10am -1 pm, Monday thru Friday starting on July 8, All payments will be by credit card only. Space is limited. There will be no refunds. Once the seats are filled, a waiting list will be formed.
