2 Sacramental Preparation Baptism: All Baptisms are celebrated on the first Sunday of the month at 9:45 AM. The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Baptism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:45 AM. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active worship is required for two months prior to preparation. Haven t Received Your Sacrament on Schedule? Families of children in grades three and up who have been baptized but have not yet received any formal religious education, as well as those who have not been baptized, should contact the Parish Office for information on how to proceed. Initiation of Adults and Older Children: This is an extended formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or baptized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to become members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbaptized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish office for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years. Adult Confirmation: This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The program is a week program, with Confirmation being celebrated on the Solemnity of Pentecost. Please call the parish office for more details. Matrimony: Couples wishing to marry in Good Shepherd Parish are required to make initial arrangements at least one year in advance. Four sessions with the priest or deacon, as well as Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter take place during this year. Parish registration and active worship for at least two months are required before a date may be scheduled. Anointing of the Sick: Anyone who is seriously ill or unable to come to church for a length of time should contact the parish office to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick. Eucharistic Ministers bring Holy Communion to homebound parishioners every Sunday, and one of the priests will visit on the First Friday of each month. Please call the parish office to make arrangements. The Diocese of Metuchen provides Catholic priests to serve at all local hospitals. Holy Orders: If you are interested in learning more about the priesthood or religious life, contact the Vocations Office of the Diocese of Metuchen at , ext or by at vocations@diometuchen.org or visit Parish Registration: We welcome you to the Good Shepherd Parish Community! Parish registration is required for religious education, celebration of all Sacraments and certification as a sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation. Regular Sunday worship with us indicates a practicing Catholic, not just parish registration. An assurance of family practice and raising children in the faith they seek is necessary for the sacraments of initiation and certification of sponsorship. 3 Lord, to whom shall we go.? Today we end our five week reading from the sixth chapter of the Gospel of St. John. Jesus had upset His hearers by telling them that they had to eat His flesh and drink His blood. It almost sounded a bit cannibalistic. And the result was that many of them walked away. It was too much for them. Notice something: Jesus didn t take back what He said, He didn t chase after them to get them back. And He turns to the Twelve: Do you want to leave me too? He asks. And St. Peter responds: Lord, to whom shall we go Over the past few weeks now, we ve also had a lot of hard words given to us, too: incredibly painful reports about the abuse of children, about abuses of power, especially in regards to the founding bishop of our Diocese. Last weekend, all of our deacons brought this out in their homilies, and today it s my turn. It s been very painful for me. I ve seen the names of people I was in seminary with. It has brought back a lot of very bad memories for me of being an outsider during my seminary years (Frs. Barbella, Crummy or Comandini and I were never in the elite circle of nephews that you ve read about.) I ve also read a good amount of the 1,300 plus pages of the Pennsylvania grand jury report, and have had to see four names of priests I knew: two were exonerated by Vatican trials, two were removed from ministry. I ve spoken with a number of other seminarians and other priests. It has been painful time for us all, a time when it is very easy and indeed, very tempting, to walk away. But St. Peter s question almost seems to be the answer itself: we go to Jesus the Lord. Because HE is what we are all about. Despite the failures and sinfulness of our leaders, Jesus is the one we ultimately answer to. He is our way our only way - to eternal life. Over the history of the Church, there have been many poor, if not downright scandalous leaders. Yet at the same time, God raised up great saints to confront and challenge those poor leaders: think of St. Francis and St. Dominic, St. Catherine of Siena. Prophetic voices still speak out in our world today against the injustices we see around us. And what are they speaking? The message of Jesus Christ! While this is a tough time and I have to admit, I was more than a bit uncomfortable last weekend, these dark days call all of us to a renewal of faith. We re called to pray for the victims of that abuse, and guarantee that it stops, now. It calls us to pray for the conversion of those most in need of God s mercy who commit these crimes. And it challenges us to look into our hearts to see where we have grown indifferent, where we may have turned a blind eye, where we have kept silent. Like St. Peter who, despite his bold words in today s gospel still had a lot to learn and with him, may we all go ever more confidently to the Lord of life and love. While on that theme. There are a lot of good prayer resources that we re making available for you, many of which are online. I m assembling a list of online resources, and we ll be putting out printed materials as well. One of the suggestions that someone made to me is one that we ll be starting this weekend. Many of you over the age of 60 may remember that, at the end of Mass, there were prayers often referred to as the Leonine Prayers. They were a set of prayers which were said after Mass was over, which were put there by Pope Leo XIII in the late nineteenth century, and which were said until the liturgical reforms of Vatican II, up until about One of them was Pope Leo s own prayer to St. Michael the Archangel. After Our Lady appeared at Fatima in 1917, these prayers were often said for the conversion of Russia. We need this prayerful help more than ever now. So we re going to start reciting the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel at all Masses after Communion this weekend. Don t worry it s on the back cover of our missals! Jesus Himself, in one of the gospels, told the Twelve (who were trying unsuccessfully to exorcise a demon from a man) that these demonic powers can only be driven out by prayer. So it is to prayer we go. And I might add, it s been interesting and frankly, quite nice to see an uptick in daily Mass attendance these past few weeks. Prayer works! This past week the roof inspection was done by CME Engineering. They were able to use a drone to inspect the roof and take photos as I write this, I m still waiting for the pictures, and it ll take a few weeks to get more information to you as they draw up proposals for us. I have to say it was cool watching the drone over the church and using it rather than a lift saved us several thousand dollars. Hopefully the pictures come out really clear! I know - a lot to absorb this week. Let s pray for each other, as I do for you all! And thanks for your words of support! Mass attendance on August 15 th was 176, and 454 on August 18/19. All Christians are called to be Intercessory. All Christians have the Holy Spirit in their hearts and, just as Christ intercedes for us in accordance with God s will (Romans 8:26-27), we are to intercede for one another. Nothing is too small to request from our Lord, Jesus. Nothing is insignificant to him. At the Good Shepherd Parish our Children have embarked on a mission of Intercessory Prayer by praying nightly at 9:00 pm. We have been conducting classes on Intercessory prayers so that our youth are prepared to be Intercessors. Weekly they are presented with the prayer requests from parishioners. We pray and then they go forth with their mission work. Some of the benefits of the Intercessory Prayers: It increases God s Protection. It strengthens us to do what God is calling us to do. It removes feelings of aloneness. It builds our relationship with God and increases our faith.
