2 Sacramental Preparation Baptism: All Baptisms are celebrated on the first Sunday of the month at 1:15 PM. The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Baptism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:00 AM. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active worship is required for two months prior to preparation. Haven t Received Your Sacrament on Schedule? Families of children in grades three and up who have been baptized but have not yet received any formal religious education, as well as those who have not been baptized, should contact the Parish Office for information on how to proceed. Initiation of Adults and Older Children: This is an extended formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or baptized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to become members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbaptized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish office for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years. Adult Confirmation: This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The program is a week program, with Confirmation being celebrated on the Solemnity of Pentecost. Please call the parish office for more details. Matrimony: Couples wishing to marry in Good Shepherd Parish are required to make initial arrangements at least one year in advance. Four sessions with the priest or deacon, as well as Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter take place during this year. Parish registration and active worship for at least two months are required before a date may be scheduled. Anointing of the Sick: Anyone who is seriously ill or unable to come to church for a length of time should contact the parish office to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick. Eucharistic Ministers bring Holy Communion to homebound parishioners every Sunday, and one of the priests will visit on the First Friday of each month. Please call the parish office to make arrangements. The Diocese of Metuchen provides Catholic priests to serve at all local hospitals. Holy Orders: If you are interested in learning more about the priesthood or religious life, contact the Vocations Office of the Diocese of Metuchen at , ext or by at vocations@diometuchen.org or visit Parish Registration: We welcome you to the Good Shepherd Parish Community! Please register at the Parish Office as soon as you are able to do so, and the staff will be more than happy to inform you about our parish and the opportunities we offer. Parish registration is required for religious education, celebration of all Sacraments and certification as a sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation. Regular Sunday worship with us indicates a practicing Catholic, not just parish registration. An assurance of family practice and raising children in the faith they seek is necessary for the sacraments of initiation and certification of sponsorship. 3 A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR: As if last week wasn t busy enough here goes! Tis The Month of Our Mother Our annual May devotions to the Blessed Mother start right off today. Our annual May Crowning Ceremony will take place at the 12:00 Noon Mass. This year s Crowner is Jazmin Genao. Jazmin is a freshman at Bishop Ahr High School, and has been an Altar Server in our parish for the past five years, as well as being involved in a number of other activities both at school and in the parish. Tomorrow evening, Monday, May 2 nd, the Altar Rosary Society will hold their annual Scriptural Rosary at 7:00 PM in the church. This extended version of the Rosary includes hymns and reflections on each of the Mysteries of the Rosary a wonderful way to start off this month in honor of Our Lady. All are invited to join us. While on that theme the Crowning Statue: Many of you may be wondering about the statue of Our Lady that we are using for the May Crowning this year. First off, it is NOT a new statue. This statue of Our Lady of Lourdes was the statue that stood in the entrance foyer at Holy Spirit Rectory, and which would be brought over to the church every October and May and which was then naturally used for May Crowning. As we re trying to incorporate religious articles from Holy Spirit, a few months back I started to think about using this statue. However, at that time, it really looked like it needed an overhaul (or should I say a makeover?) About a month back, when we had the sedilia (the priest s bench) from Holy Spirit brought over, Ray Tiedemann, whose family s church painting business has been around a long time, got me in touch with Luzia Oliskovicz, an artist from Kearny who works for him in restoring statues as well as doing faux marble painting. Luzia did the faux marble painting of the bench, and I m still getting rave reviews from you all on how good it looks! When she was here, I mentioned that I had this statue for her to look at so she took it, and restored it beautifully! She just brought it back to us last Saturday. So I m happy to use this statue, which will be out in church during the months of May and October. Just like it s always been only in a new location. Welcome Bishop Checchio: On Tuesday, May 3 rd, we will have an historic moment in the life of our Diocese as we will witness the Ordination and Installation of the Fifth Bishop of Metuchen, Bishop James Checchio. While the Mass is by invitation only, it WILL be televised on EWTN, NET TV and Catholic TV New England Region, as well as livestreamed on our Diocesan website where it will also be available for later viewing. The liturgical procession begins at 1:30, the Mass at 2:00 PM. - we actually have to park at the location of the reception and take buses to Sacred Heart (and the last bus will leave for Sacred Heart at 12:45!) There will be added coverage in the next edition of The Catholic Spirit, and our local press will have additional coverage. Again, please keep Bishop Elect Checchio in your prayers as he becomes our new chief shepherd! Beginning this Wednesday morning at Mass, you ll hear just his name as bishop, although we will certainly remember and still pray for Bishop Bootkoski as he transitions into retirement! SPECIAL NOTE: So that everyone (including our parish staff) can watch the Bishop s Ordination Mass undisturbed, the Parish Office will close at 1:00 PM this Tuesday, May 3 rd. The Solemnity of The Ascension: This Thursday, May 5 th is the Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord, a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses will be offered at 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM. In addition to that, on Friday we will begin our annual Novena in Preparation for Pentecost. The nine days between the Ascension and Pentecost were the original Novena. These prayers invoking the Holy Spirit will be said after all daily Masses, and will take the place of the regular Novenas that we say on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Copies will also be available for you to say at home. Mother s Day is next Sunday! Spiritual Bouquet cards are still available on the credenzas by the church entrances as well as at the Parish Office. Mass attendance for April 23/24 was 633. In addition to Bishop Checchio, please remember in your prayers our Adult Confirmation candidates, who will receive this Sacrament at the 10:00 Mass on Pentecost. Have a great week ahead, Fr. We will gather at 7:00 PM outside of the church. The procession will begin at 7:30 PM. Recitation of the Rosary will take place inside the church for those unable to walk the procession route. With your help and generous donations we had a very successful Tricky Tray last October. We need your help and donations to repeat the feat again. Donations of new, unused items in their original packaging can be dropped off at the Parish Office during regular business hours. Please note your name and approximate retail price on any donated items. Items needed include: small appliances (coffee makers, toasters, etc.), household items (sheets, towels, pots, pans, etc.); electronics (Kindles, Ipads, Ipods, phones, power tools, etc.). The tabs provide a tremendous source of charitable revenue for the Ronald McDonald House. The aluminum from pop tab rings is taken to the local recycling station where it is weighed and cashed in by the pound. The money netted is used to assist the House with operational expenses such as household supplies and utilities as well as to waive the fee for those families in need of financial support. We hope we can count on your support!! Please place your collected tabs in the receptacles at both worship sites. Stop by and see what we re all about. Fill out a registration form to reserve your spot! Intercessory Prayer Intercessory prayer is the act of praying on behalf of others. All Christians are called to be Intercessory. All Christians have the Holy Spirit in their hearts and, just as Christ intercedes for us in accordance with God s will (Romans 8:26-27), we are to intercede for one another. Nothing is too small to request from our Lord, Jesus. Nothing is insignificant to him. At the Good Shepherd Parish our Children have embarked on a mission of Intercessory Prayer by praying nightly at 9:00 pm. We have been conducting classes on Intercessory prayers so that our youth are prepared to be Intercessors. Weekly they are presented with the prayer requests from parishioners. We pray and then they go forth with their mission work. Some of the benefits of the Intercessory Prayers: It increases God s Protection. It strengthens us to do what God is calling us to do.
