2 Sacramental Preparation Baptism: is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month at 1:00 PM at Most Holy Rosary Church, and at 9:00 AM on the third Sunday of the month at Holy Spirit. The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Baptism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:00 AM at Holy Spirit Church. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active worship is required for two months prior to preparation. Haven t Received Your Sacrament on Schedule? Families of children in grades three and up who have been baptized but have not yet received any formal religious education, as well as those who have not been baptized, should contact the Parish Office for information on how to proceed. Initiation of Adults and Older Children: This is an extended formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or baptized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to become members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbaptized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish office for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years. Adult Confirmation: This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The program is a week program, with Confirmation being celebrated on the Solemnity of Pentecost. Please call the parish office for more details. Matrimony: Couples wishing to marry in Good Shepherd parish are required to make initial arrangements at least one year in advance. Four sessions with the priest or deacon, as well as Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter take place during this year. Parish registration and active worship for at least two months are required before a date may be scheduled. Anointing of the Sick: Anyone who is seriously ill or unable to come to church for a length of time should contact the parish office to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick. Eucharistic Ministers bring Holy Communion to homebound parishioners every Sunday, and one of the priests will visit on the First Friday of each month. Please call the parish office to make arrangements. The Diocese of Metuchen provides Catholic priests to serve at all local hospitals. Holy Orders: If you are interested in learning more about the priesthood or religious life, contact the Vocations Office of the Diocese of Metuchen at ,ext or by at vocations@diometuchen.org or visit Parish Registration: We welcome you to the Good Shepherd Parish Community! Please register at the Parish Office as soon as you are able to do so, and the staff will be more than happy to inform you about our parish and the opportunities we offer. Parish registration is required for religious education, celebration of all Sacraments and certification as a sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation. Regular Sunday worship with us indicates a practicing Catholic, not just parish registration. An assurance of family practice and raising children in the faith they seek is necessary for the sacraments of initiation and certification of sponsorship. 3 A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR: Counting Down: The three Sundays prior to the beginning of Lent in the older liturgical calendar went by the names of Septuagesima, Sexegesima and Quinquigesima. It basically meant seventy, sixty and fifty days from Easter. Today is the second of the three, Sexagesima. As you count, you obviously realize quickly that these Sundays are not seventy, sixty and fifty days from Easter. Still, they can serve a good purpose for us as we begin the countdown to Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18 th. This coming Lent we will have our traditional practices. Stations of the Cross begin on Friday, February 20 th and continue through Good Friday on April 3 rd. Once again this year, we will be holding our Soup and Bread Dinner from 5:30-6:30 before Stations, and the return of the Pizza Dinner on March 27 th following the Living Stations of the Cross. We have volunteers covering every Friday except on Friday, March 13 th. If anyone would like to take this one day, please call the Parish Office soon! As we did last year, we will be accepting free will offerings at these dinners which will be given to Catholic Relief Services as a part of our annual Operation Rice Bowl project (ORB packets will be available on the book tables at both churches on Ash Wednesday. Lenten Faith Enrichment: We will have a variety or reading materials out on Ash Wednesday for you to take home. This year, we will use the Symbolon The Catholic Faith Explained series by Dr. Edward Sri. It s an excellent video presentation, and we will use several of these on different topics. As we did in previous years, we ll have two sessions. This year we will do them both on Monday: in the afternoon at 1:30 and in the evening at 7:00. The complete schedule of topics will be in next Sunday s bulletin. Lenten Mission: Good Shepherd Parish will again join with Most Holy Name of Jesus Parish in co-sponsoring the Vocationist Fathers for our Lenten Mission. On March 16, 17 and 18, we will have an additional daily Mass at 12:00 Noon at Holy Spirit. A Closing Mass will be held on Friday, March 20 th at St. Stephen s. More details will be in next week s bulletin along with the Lenten regulations for days of fast and abstinence as well as my annual Suggested Lenten Reading book list! Mardi Gras and Big Money Raffle: Next Saturday, February 14 th is our second Parish Ethnic Mardi Gras Dinner following the 4:30 PM Mass. Once again, it should be a good time for all. If you re planning on coming, please call the Parish Office early this week. The main thing is come and join us! And our Big Money Raffle goes off that evening as well. Please make your returns this week we are really counting on a good response to this major winter fundraiser. Thanks to all those who have made their returns already, and to those who have volunteered to cook and help out for this Saturday! Thank You to all who have participated so far in the $20 Food Pantry Challenge. During the past few weeks, we ve been getting an average of 8-10 families coming in every day the Food Pantry is open looking for assistance. Your generosity makes it happen! 6 Good Shepherd Parish 2015 Scholarship Applica on Good Shepherd Parish Scholarships are awarded to young men and women of our parish who give of themselves to their school, community and the parish. To date, the parish has awarded 31 scholarships to students who attended a Catholic high school or college. If you are a registered member of Good Shepherd Parish and attend weekly mass on a regular basis, you may apply for a scholarship by picking up an application from the parish office located at 625 Florida Grove Rd. between the hours of 9 am-3 pm, Monday thru Friday, OR, call the parish office ( ) and request an application be mailed to your home, OR the parish office at (Goodshepherd20@verizon.net) to request the application be ed to you. Completed applications must be returned to the parish office no later than Friday, March 13th by Noon. Applications will not be accepted after that date. Intercessory Prayer Intercessory prayer is the act of praying on behalf of others. All Christians are called to be Intercessory. All Christians have the Holy Spirit in their hearts and, just as Christ intercedes for us in accordance with God s will (Romans 8:26-27), we are to intercede for one another. Nothing is too small to request from our Lord, Jesus. Nothing is insignificant to him. At the Good Shepherd Parish our children have embarked on a mission of Intercessory Prayer by praying nightly at 9:00 pm. We have been conducting classes on Intercessory prayers so that our youth are prepared to be Intercessors. Weekly, they are presented with the prayer requests from parishioners. We pray and then they go forth with their mission work. Some of the benefits of the Intercessory Prayers: It increases God s Protection. It strengthens us to do what God is calling us to do. 7 Purgatorial Mass Society If you would like to enroll a loved one for , please call Maria at the Parish Office. The donation is $25.00 per enrollment. This includes a large attractive card for you to give to the family when a loved one passes away. New enrollments will be listed in the bulletin once a month. At every First Friday Morning Mass at Most Holy Rosary the names of those enrolled for that month will be placed on the Altar and will remain there for one year.
