The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Baptism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:00 AM at Holy Spirit Church. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active worship is required for two months prior to preparation. Haven t Received Your Sacrament on Schedule? Families of children in grades three and up who have been baptized but have not yet received any formal religious education, as well as those who have not been baptized, should contact the Parish Office for information on how to proceed. Initiation of Adults and Older Children: This is an extended formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or baptized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to become members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbaptized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish office for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years. Adult Confirmation: This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The program is a week program, with Confirmation being celebrated on the Solemnity of Pentecost. Please call the parish office for more details. 3 A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR: As October winds down and November begins, the days get shorter (don t forget: next Saturday night we move our clocks back one hour!) and schedules get busier. Here s a few main highlights to be aware of for this week: All Saints/All Souls: Next weekend we mark All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Since November 1 st falls on a Saturday this year, the obligation to attend Mass that day is dispensed. There will, however, be two morning Masses that day: at 8:00 AM at Holy Spirit and 10:00 AM at Most Holy Rosary. Sunday, November 2 nd is All Souls Day. At the 10:00 AM and 12:00 Noon Masses on Sunday, we will have the Solemn Requiem at which the names of all our parishioners who have died since this time last year will be read invitations to their families have been mailed out. If you haven t returned your All Souls Remembrance envelopes please do so as soon as possible this week so we can have them on the Altars at both churches for November 2 nd. We will also have the annual Blessing of the Cemetery at 4:00 PM on Sunday, November 2 nd. All are invited to attend this brief prayer service. FireStarter This Saturday, November 1 st, the combined Youth and Young Adult Ministries of all the Perth Amboy parishes will be coming together at Most Holy Rosary for a day of prayer and meetings. This is the first time that we are doing this on a city-wide level for me, it brings back memories of the diocesan Youth Ministry Days that were so much a part of our Diocesan life. First off, pray for its success! As I ve said a few times the past few weeks, the young people of our parishes are faced with so much that many of us weren t faced with at that age. Living our Faith is a lot tougher these days. Second, to all our young parishioners: please join us! Flyers were given out at our Youth Ministry meetings as well as at Mass last weekend. It promises to be a great day, and the cost is only $5.00. Finally, just a heads up: the day will end with participants attending the 4:30 PM Mass here. Our parish Youth Guitar ensemble will be providing the music for the Mass. Working Together The Most Holy Rosary Working Together Capital Campaign is now wrapping up. I would again like to thank all those who so generously donated towards this even with the uncertainty that the mergers of our parishes caused in the minds of many! A great deal was accomplished through your exceptional generosity: the new air conditioning system in the church and rectory, a new furnace and windows in the rectory and the paving of the back part of the parking lot. The last project will be a further clean-up and landscaping, which I signed contracts for about a week ago. At the 10:00 Mass today we will have the dedication of the memorial book for this campaign, followed by light refreshments in Msgr. Gambino Hall. This was a very successful campaign, and I would like to thank the members of the Campaign Committee: Diane DeLibero, Phyllis Edwards, Toni Gianfrancesco, Frank LaRosa and Stella Paone for their hard work these past three years. There are certainly other things I d love to see get done in the future, and some things that need to be done but for now, they are on my wish list! Parish Center Sale: We received initial approval from the Perth Amboy Zoning Board for our request to make a modification to our property basically a modification to the property line behind the old Holy Spirit rectory. We should be nearing the 45 day mark for final approval. Also, after the removal of the old oil tank, we were waiting to hear if we had to do any further remediation of contaminated soil. Happily, we don t have to it was clear! However, we had to submit a report to the state EPA for them to close this case. All of that paperwork has been filed, and we re now waiting for that to be approved. Once we have that in hand, we can proceed with the closing on the property, so hopefully that should be happening sometime in November. New Altar Server Training: A training program for boys and girls who are interested in becoming Altar Servers will begin on Saturday, November 8 th. Boys and girls who have made their For the month of October First Communion are eligible to join. We will have three weeks of training, after which novice servers will be assigned with older, please pray for those who need experienced servers. While a number of children signed up a few the support of this community of faith: months back, we haven t had the training sessions yet and there s always room for more servers. Being an Altar Server is a great way of learning more about the Mass, as well as being part of an essential liturgical ministry. If you are interested, please call the Parish Office this week. Some News to Pass On: As some of you know by now, my seminary and ordination classmate and my predecessor several times removed at Most Holy Rosary, Father Glenn Comandini, has resigned his position as Pastor of St. James Church in Basking Ridge as of this week. Both his mother and father are suffering from cancer, and as they live in North Carolina now, Father Glenn will be moving down there to be closer to them, while continuing his priestly ministry there. I know that many of you remember Mr. and Mrs. Comandini, as I do when we were in seminary, they would always have us over to their house for dinner a few times each year. Please keep them, and Father Glenn, in your prayers. As I hear more, I will let you know. Mass attendance on October 18/19 was 747. Have a great week ahead Fr. Spreading the Word Whoever sacrifices to any god, save to the Lord only, shall be utterly destroyed. Exodus 22:20 Do you put other gods before God? Is your love of money, power, status or some personal possession greater than your love for God? If so, you may want to pay attention to the scripture reading because you are not going to like the outcome. The good news it s not too late to put God first in your life. Please let one of the ushers know if you are unable to walk up at Communion time. A Eucharistic Minister will gladly bring communion to you. RCIA/Adult Confirma on Have you ever wanted to join your spouse and children when they receive Communion at Mass and you can t because you were never baptized? Are you an adult who was baptized as an infant but never received any religious training? Are you from another faith tradition who is interested in becoming a Catholic? Did you receive Baptism and Communion, but not Confirmation and you re well beyond CCD age? Then the RCIA may be for YOU! The Order of Christian Initiation is designed for adults and older children (10 and up) who have never been baptized, for baptized adult Catholics who have never received the sacraments of Communion and Confirmation, and for persons from other faith traditions who wish to convert to the Catholic Faith. Good Shepherd Parish will be starting our instruction program at the end of October. Attendance at all classes is required. Traditionally the Sacraments of Initiation are celebrated at the Easter Vigil, with classes continuing for several weeks after Easter. For those adults who are seeking only the Sacrament of Confirmation, this Sacrament will be celebrated on the Solemnity of Pentecost. It is a serious commitment of time and effort, so prayerfully consider this before making this commitment. ALSO: Please note that those who are only seeking Confirmation must be over the age of 18 high school students seeking Confirmation must participate in the 7th and 8th grade Confirmation program. Our first session will began on Tuesday, October 28, 7pm, at the worship site of Most Holy Rosary. We hope to see you then!
