2 Sacramental Preparation Baptism: All Baptisms are celebrated on the first Sunday of the month at 9:45 AM. The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Baptism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:45 AM. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active worship is required for two months prior to preparation. Haven t Received Your Sacrament on Schedule? Families of children in grades three and up who have been baptized but have not yet received any formal religious education, as well as those who have not been baptized, should contact the Parish Office for information on how to proceed. Initiation of Adults and Older Children: This is an extended formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or baptized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to become members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbaptized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish office for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years. Adult Confirmation: This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The program is a week program, with Confirmation being celebrated on the Solemnity of Pentecost. Please call the parish office for more details. Matrimony: Couples wishing to marry in Good Shepherd Parish are required to make initial arrangements at least one year in advance. Four sessions with the priest or deacon, as well as Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter take place during this year. Parish registration and active worship for at least two months are required before a date may be scheduled. Anointing of the Sick: Anyone who is seriously ill or unable to come to church for a length of time should contact the parish office to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick. Eucharistic Ministers bring Holy Communion to homebound parishioners every Sunday, and one of the priests will visit on the First Friday of each month. Please call the parish office to make arrangements. The Diocese of Metuchen provides Catholic priests to serve at all local hospitals. Holy Orders: If you are interested in learning more about the priesthood or religious life, contact the Vocations Office of the Diocese of Metuchen at , ext or by at vocations@diometuchen.org or visit Parish Registration: We welcome you to the Good Shepherd Parish Community! Please register at the Parish Office as soon as you are able to do so, and the staff will be more than happy to inform you about our parish and the opportunities we offer. Parish registration is required for religious education, celebration of all Sacraments and certification as a sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation. Regular Sunday worship with us indicates a practicing Catholic, not just parish registration. An assurance of family practice and raising children in the faith they seek is necessary for the sacraments of initiation and certification of sponsorship. 3 It s hard to believe that September is now gone and we are ready to move into the month of October. But here it is! There s a lot going on this week and next, so here goes: This week is a great week for Saints! While we don t celebrate his feast day this year as it falls on Sunday, September 30 th is the memorial of St. Jerome, the great early Scripture scholar who gave the Church one of the earliest translations of the Bible. It was he who said that ignorance of the Bible is ignorance of Christ. Monday, October 1 st we celebrate the memorial of St. Therese of Lisieux, the Little Flower, one of the most beloved saints as well as a Doctor of the Church. On Tuesday, October 2 nd we remember the Guardian Angels, those spirits appointed by God to watch over us in all our ways. As I ve done in the past, we ll end the Intercessions at Mass that day with the traditional prayer to our Guardian Angel, a prayer that was one of the first most of us learned as children. Then on Thursday the 4 th, we remember St. Francis of Assisi, again one of the most beloved saints. Please join us in prayer at Mass especially those days this week! Away Days: This coming week I will be away at the annual reunion at Mount St. Mary s Seminary down in Maryland. I will be leaving after Mass this Tuesday morning, October 2 nd, coming back to the parish late on Thursday afternoon the 4th. Father Pauly Thekkan will be covering the Masses on Wednesday and Thursday morning, and Fr. Sean Winters will be covering any funerals that may come in. The following week, our annual Diocesan Priest s Convocation will be held down in Spring Lake (hope it s a nice warm week!) from Tuesday afternoon, October 9 th through Thursday afternoon, October 11 th. Again, I will be here for Mass on Tuesday morning. However, on Wednesday and Thursday morning (October 10 th and 11 th ) one of our deacons will conduct a Communion Service at 8:00 AM. The Mass intention for Wednesday will be offered on Tuesday, and the Mass intention for Thursday will also be offered on Friday. I ll have more on next week in next Sunday s bulletin. National Rosary Rally Coast to Coast Rosary: In conjunction with the National Rosary Rally being held in Washington, DC on Sunday, October 7 th (which is traditionally the Feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary), this year churches across the United States are invited to participate in a Coast to Coast Rosary for our nation, beginning at 4:00 PM. Our Good Shepherd Altar Rosary Society will be hosting this event here in church, and all are invited to join us in prayer next Sunday afternoon. We will have Eucharistic Adoration beginning at 3:00 PM, and we will have the recitation of the Rosary beginning at 4:00 PM sharp, followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. With all that is going on in our Church and in our world as well as in our own lives it s a wonderful opportunity for us to come together to pray. So PLEASE plan on joining us next Sunday. Relics of St. Anthony of Padua: On Friday, October 5 th, as a part of a nation-wide tour, the relics of St. Anthony of Padua will make a stop, not only in our Diocese, but right in our neighborhood! The relics will be on display for veneration at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Port Reading. The church will be open for prayer from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM, with a special Mass being offered at 12:15 PM. All are invited to attend. Blessing of Animals: The annual Blessing of Animals to commemorate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi will be held this Saturday, October 6 th at 12:00 Noon SHARP, rain or shine. The brief prayer service will take place in the plaza area on the side of the church. All pets of the parish and their owners are invited to attend Don t Forget October is the Month of the Rosary! We say the Rosary every weekday before Mass, and on Sunday before the 8:30 AM Mass. If you can t join us here in church, make an effort to say a Rosary a week during this month. And, since October 7 th falls on a Sunday the 7 th being the traditional Feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary we will celebrate it at Mass on Monday, October 8 th. The Mass Is The Same Sacrifice As Calvary The biggest mistake that many Catholics make is treating the Holy Mass as just another church service, similar to those held by other religions. In the Mass, Christ s Sacrifice on the Cross is made present, its memory is celebrated and its saving power is applied. The Council of Trent teaches that Christ left a visible sacrifice to His Church in which that bloody sacrifice which was once offered on the Cross should be made present, its memory preserved to the end of the world, and its salvationbringing power applied to the forgiveness of the sins which are daily committed by us. When we attend Mass, we are mystically transported to Calvary, where we can unite ourselves with the Lord s Sacrifice to the Father! Low Gluten Communion Wafers For those who require special dietary restrictions, we have Church approved low gluten hosts available. If you need to receive one of these hosts at Communion, please inform the priest or deacon at least five minutes before Mass begins. These hosts will be put in a special pyx apart from the other hosts on the Altar to eliminate any cross contamination. Purgatorial Mass Society If you would like to enroll a loved one for 2018, please call Maria at the Parish Office. The donation is $25.00 per enrollment. This includes a large attractive card for you to give to the family when a loved one passes away. New enrollments will be listed in the bulletin once a month. At every First Friday Morning Mass the names of those enrolled for that month will be placed on the Altar and will remain there for one year. 5 Intercessory Prayer Intercessory prayer is the act of praying on behalf of others. All Christians are called to be Intercessory. All Christians have the Holy Spirit in their hearts and, just as Christ intercedes for us in accordance with God s will (Romans 8:26-27), we are to intercede for one another. Nothing is too small to request from our Lord, Jesus. Nothing is insignificant to him. At the Good Shepherd Parish our Children have embarked on a mission of Intercessory Prayer by praying nightly at 9:00 pm. We have been conducting classes on Intercessory prayers so that our youth are prepared to be Intercessors. Weekly they are presented with the prayer requests from parishioners. We pray and then they go forth with their mission work. Some of the benefits of the Intercessory Prayers: It increases God s Protection. It strengthens us to do what God is calling us to do. It removes feelings of aloneness. It builds our relationship with God and increases our faith.
