The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Baptism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:00 AM at Holy Spirit Church. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active worship is required for two months prior to preparation. Haven t Received Your Sacrament on Schedule? Families of children in grades three and up who have been baptized but have not yet received any formal religious education, as well as those who have not been baptized, should contact the Parish Office for information on how to proceed. Initiation of Adults and Older Children: This is an extended formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or baptized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to become members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbaptized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish office for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years. Adult Confirmation: This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The program is a week program, with Confirmation being celebrated on the Solemnity of Pentecost. Please call the parish office for more details. Matrimony: Couples wishing to marry in Good Shepherd parish are required to make initial arrangements at least one year in advance. Four sessions with the priest or deacon, as well as Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter take place during this year. 3 A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR: As summer continues, parish life will quiet down a bit, now that Vacation Bible School is completed. Since it s still going on while I m writing this, I ll have a full report in the bulletin the Sunday after next. What I CAN tell you is that it s a very happy group, and it s hard to tell who s having more fun the campers or the helpers! After Masses today, I will be leaving for the week, returning to the parish on the afternoon of July 20th. So there will be no letter from me in next Sunday s bulletin. As for this week? Relaxation maybe not so much, but fun, yes. This week I will be doing something quite different (but not unexpected): I will be taking a full week s program at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. A few years back, I saw on a TV program that they offer a five day immersion program for people like me who like to cook and who want to hone their skills in a professional setting. Time wise, it never seemed to work out for me to take the full week but when I checked the CIA schedule, this week just happened to work out. But it s a LONG day: we get started in the kitchen at 7:00 AM every morning and go until mid afternoon, and then dinner each night at one of the on-campus restaurants (I ve already talked about the possibility of doing a trip there it s an incredible place to visit.) In addition to the five day course, I ll also be taking a one day, 5 hour course there next Saturday which is just about grilling! Once that s done, I ll take the rest of the weekend to relax and enjoy that part of the Hudson Valley, which is very rich in history. As most of you know, cooking is one of my hobbies, so this is going to be a cooking vacation. I ll fill you in about it once I get back and I can imagine there might some homily material as well as some new recipes (and hopefully not too much weight gain!) Annual Mission Appeal: This weekend we welcome Brother Robert Ziobro, SC, a Brother of the Sacred Heart who will speak at all Masses as a part of our diocesan Mission Cooperative Plan. Brother Robert (who was my freshman religion teacher at St. Joseph s High School more years ago than either of us would like to admit!) will be speaking about his Order s teaching apostolate in Africa. The second collection is for the Mission Cooperative Plan. Please make all checks payable to Good Shepherd Parish we will issue one check to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart from the parish once the collection is totaled. Thank You once again for your generosity. Hymnal Memorials: We ve already received a good number of memorial donations for our new Journeysong hymnals. I ordered the new books last week, and while we ll get them later this summer, they won t be in the pews until late in November. Our first use of them will probably be for the Mass on Thanksgiving Day (don t want to think about that!) Donation envelopes are available in church and at the Parish Office. At $20 a book, it s a very affordable way to remember a loved one (bookplates recording your donation will be placed in each book) and it s a memorial that will be used, week after week. Please consider giving a book (or two). Thanks again! Mass attendance on July 4/5 was 529. Have a great week ahead, Fr. Mike For the month of July pray for those who need the support of this community of faith: Mary Murray, Anna Gironda, Andrea Costantino, Greg Rohrbacher, Maris DeJesus, Filbert Maez, Sueann Tarantino, Janet Anne Dwyer, Shirley Barbieri, David Utter, Catherine Suhay, Carmen Collura, Baby Seraphina, Chuck F., Lillian Estok, Valerie Breyta, Tom Bromirski, Lynn Munoz, Carol Magyar, JoAnn Magyar, Dorothy Maez, Rose Morley, Maryann Petrick, Mike & Kate Adda, Chris Hankerson, William Narvaez, Christopher Paone, Judy Smegelski, William Sienko, Baby Christopher Hernandez, Dan Alvarez, Telofski Family, Elsie Vega, Arnold Jasper, Connie & Vince Montuoro, Drew Horvat, Alexander Simon, Chris Johnson, Nicole Honkisz, Esidore Maey, Nancy Weber, John Zur, Mary Martini, Robert Durso, Barbara White, Ria Orsini, Baby Zachary, Natalie Ulrich, Christian Nunez, Carolyn Tarantino, Gene Jacob, Danny Parker, Bill Karvalis, Sr. Hortensia Diaz, Joey Nemeth, Baby Jael Maldonado, Jerry Disilverstro, Dee Ziemba, Robert (Bob) Pincelli, Nicholas Folfa, Diane Petro Duncan, Tom Kenjon, Heather Gondek, Rosemary Kelesi, Stephen Pry, Carol George, Paul Halek, Nancy Milochik, Rose Celecki, Braden Cruz, Baby M, Ashelyn Polonia, Carmen Titolo, Patricia Kupst, Joann Zamelio, Megan Ortega, Rigoberto Diffoot, Dan & Kathy Balinski, Michael Estok Jr., Arleen Kopin, William Moriarty, Carolyn Duane, Fr. Please let us be mindful of our dress for the Lord s House during the warm summer months. Tastes vary, yet we all agree that certain types of clothing are not appropriate for Church. Your cooperation and thoughtfulness in this regard is greatly appreciated.

6 R.C.I.A. GOOD NEWS!! When we consider all of the things in life that trap, bind, and hinder us, our own inner weaknesses and conflicts loom as the greatest causes. No other person or institution or situation can deprive us of a sense of integrity and dignity as deeply and painfully as we can deprive ourselves. We Christians know that our God releases us from that pain. Isn't there someone in your life who would like to hear that good news? Invite your relative or your friend to an RCIA Inquiry Session. Our Sessions do not ask for commitments. They are a place to ask questions about God or about the Catholic Faith. They are open to anyone who is unbaptized, baptized into another Christian Denomination or baptized Catholic but has not received BOTH sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Sessions will begin in the fall. For more information please contact our Parish Office at Vacation Bible School (VBS) Sadly it has come to an end. We thank our wonderful staff for all their hard work and those who selflessly donated their time for our youth! Thank you to our parents who brought them, and the children who attended. We would also like to Thank those who helped with monetary donations or items for our program. Lastly, we would like to thank You the Parish for your prayers. May God bless you!!! Dear Fr. Mike & Parishioners: Support Perth Amboy Catholic Box Tops for Education has helped America s schools earn over $475 million since You can help Perth Amboy Catholic earn cash for the school by clipping Box Tops coupons from hundreds of participating products. Please place your collected coupon donations in the containers provided at each worship site. This is an on-going collection. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS: We are currently accepting re-registration forms only for our Religious Education Program. If you have any questions please call us at the Parish Office. 6 Although our school year has come to an end, we here at Perth Amboy Catholic Upper School pause to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who have helped make this a wonderful year. That, dear friends, certainly includes you! The wonderful collection of school supplies last autumn was a huge surprise and was greatly appreciated by all. Your diligence in assisting PACS with the collection of Box Tops for Education was a tremendous addition to our Home and School Association fundraising. Likewise, the collection of beverage can tabs for Ronald McDonald House helped us to support a truly wonderful cause, which we hope to continue. (Please try to collect box tops and tabs during the summer.) We cannot forget Father Mike s graciousness in coming to school to teach sixth grade religion once a week amid a very busy priestly schedule. All of us here at PACS Upper School thank you most sincerely for your support and assure you of a daily remembrance in our prayers, as we gather each school day morning. May God bless you abundantly for your kindness. In Jesus, the Master Teacher, Sister M. Rebecca Piatek, CSSF Sister M. Rebecca Piatek, CSSF Principal

7 Prayer Line Via Internet If you wish to be a part of this beautiful and wonderful ministry, please contact Mary Larsen by calling either (9 am to 1 pm, Monday thru Friday) or mercymary@aol.com with the subject Prayer Request or Prayer Line. Please enter into this life of prayer and reach out and touch someone in need. The internet prayer line reaches people in many states - laity, priests, sisters, deacons, and an anchoress who pray for those mentioned on this prayer line. Intercessory Prayer Intercessory prayer is the act of praying on behalf of others. All Christians are called to be Intercessory. All Christians have the Holy Spirit in their hearts and, just as Christ intercedes for us in accordance with God s will (Romans 8:26-27), we are to intercede for one another. Nothing is too small to request from our Lord, Jesus. Nothing is insignificant to him. At the Good Shepherd Parish our children have embarked on a mission of Intercessory Prayer by praying nightly at 9:00 pm. We have been conducting classes on Intercessory prayers so that our youth are prepared to be Intercessors. Weekly they are presented with the prayer requests from parishioners. We pray and then they go forth with their mission work. Some of the benefits of the Intercessory Prayers: It increases God s Protection. It strengthens us to do what God is calling us to do. It removes feelings of aloneness. It builds our relationship with God and increases our faith. If you wish to join or be added to the prayer list, please contact Mrs. Mildred Padilla-Morales at Going on vacation, And you don t want to miss Mass Log on to for a local Catholic Church in the area you are visiting. Low Gluten Communion Wafers For those who require special dietary restrictions, we have Church approved low gluten hosts available at both worship sites. If you need to receive one of these hosts at Communion, please inform the priest or deacon at least five minutes before Mass begins. These hosts will be put in a special pyx apart from the other hosts on the Altar to eliminate any cross contamination. WMOF Announcement: At a recent news conference, the World Meeting of Families Philadelphia 2015 joined with the Franklin Institute to announce that the world renowned "Vatican Splendors Exhibit" will visit the Franklin Institute September 19, February 15, The exhibition explores the historical and cultural impact of the Vatican over the span of 2,000 years through significantly relevant objects that will travel from Rome to Philadelphia. Highlights of the nearly 10,000 square-foot exhibition include artwork by Michelangelo, including signed documents and a rarely seen bas relief sculpture, tools used in work on the Sistine Chapel, works by masters including Bernini and Guercino, artwork dating back to the first century, relics (bone fragments) of Saints Peter and Paul, and numerous other significant items. Read the entire press release here: < press%20releases/pr php> Learn more about the Vatican Splendors Exhibit on the WMOF website: < -the-event/vatican-splendors/> Jennifer A. Ruggiero Director, Office of Respect for Life Summer Envelopes We sincerely thank our parishioners who mail or deliver your weekly envelopes to the parish office while you are out-of-town on vacation this summer. As many of you understand, our parish expenses and obligations do not take a vacation when you do, so it is very helpful to be able to rely on your continued support even when you cannot personally attend Mass here. Spreading the Word He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick no food, no sack, no money in their belts. (MARK 6:8) How different we are from the Apostles who took nothing when they ventured out to serve God. Today, we make our journey through life more difficult because of all the material baggage that we drag along. Yet, the more we can let go of, the freer we are to serve God with love and joy. We Welcome Your Prayer Intentions The newly established Diocesan Office for Persons with Disabilities now has a dedicated phone line and an address to receive prayer intentions from persons with disabilities, the homebound, their caregivers, relatives and friends. Call the prayer line phone number or us at catholicswithdisabilities@gmail.com and your intentions will be remembered in prayer at holy Mass.
