Even as this candle, I wish to stand in Your presence and to be consumed in the light and warmth of our Love. Please hear my prayer and, if it is Your will, grant my petition. But above all, make me loyal and faithful to You in all circumstances of my life. Amen. Let Us Pray! O Lord, giver of life and source of freedom, I know that all I have received is from your hand. 5 The Catholic Community of South Pittsburgh Readings for the week of FEBRUARY 17, 2019 First Reading The one who trusts in the L is like a tree planted beside the waters (Jeremiah 17:5-8). Psalm Blessed are they who hope in the Lord (Psalm 1). Second Reading Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep (1 Corinthians 15:12, 16-20). Gospel Blessed are you who are poor, hungry, weeping. Woe to you who are rich, filled, laughing (Luke 6:17, 20-26). GOD S SUMMONS Confronted with God s power and majesty, the first response of the prophet Isaiah was to acknowledge his sinfulness. Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, he said aloud. Likewise, with his empty fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus instruction, Peter fell to his knees and cried out, Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man. Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats then left to follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart. When he heard the Lord say, Whom shall I send? Who will go for us? Isaiah answered, Here I am, send me. We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are reminded of the saving power of the gospel and know in our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in anything else won t lead to anything. What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness? What will it take for you to get off your knees? What will it take for you to bring to dock what is unimportant and to accept your call to be God s messenger? Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Gn 1:1-19; Ps 104:1-2a, 5-6, 10, 12, 24, 35c; Mk 6:53-56 Tuesday: Gn 1:20 2:4a; Ps 8:4-9; Mk 7:1-13 Wednesday: Gn 2:4b-9, 15-17; Ps 104:1-2a, 27-28, 29bc-30; Mk 7:14-23 Thursday: Gn 2:18-25; Ps 128:1-5; Mk 7:24-30 Friday: Gn 3:1-8; Ps 32:1-2, 5-7; Mk 7:31-37 Saturday: Gn 3:9-24; Ps 90:2-4abc, 5-6, 12-13; Mk 8:1-10 Sunday: Jer 17:5-8; Ps 1:1-4, 6; 1 Cor 15:12, 16-20; Lk 6:17, Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send? Who will go for us? Here I am, I said, send me! Isaiah 6:8 PARISH CONTRIBUTION LETTERS Page Five Put Out Into Deep Water And Lower Your Nets For A Catch When we reflect on the life and ministry of Jesus it is pretty clear that so much of it was unexpected. God s chosen people were certainly awaiting a Messiah, a Savior, but they were expecting a rich and powerful king, not an itinerant preacher. Even the people Jesus surrounded himself with the poor, sinners, the marginalized were unexpected. Why wouldn t the Savior surround himself with more influential people? Yet, we know that Christ came to save all, not just some and that he casts his net far and wide in order to draw all people to himself. As followers of Christ, we seek to be his face and hands and heart in the world today and we look for countless ways to invite others to share in his life of faith. The words he speaks to Peter and the Apostles are spoken to us. Do not be afraid to put out into deep water and inspire the hearts of everyone you meet to know and love Jesus. While you may not think so, your witness of faith can be just what someone else needs to go deeper themselves in their relationship with the Lord. On Mission for The Church Alive! invites us all to look for ways build up the Body of Christ. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. ADDICTION RECOVERY MINISTRY will begin with an anointing Mass for those in recovery TODAY, Sunday, February 10, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. at Saint Paul Cathedral. Bishop David Zubik will be the principal celebrant. All are welcome. ANNUAL CEMETERY CLEAN UP NOTICE In order to maintain the appearance of our parish cemetery properties of St. John Vianney and St. Wendelin and ensure the safety of visitors and employees, the Catholic Parish Cemeteries Association will be conducting the Annual Cemetery cleanup during the month of March. Please note that all Christmas items will be removed from all graves during clean up. Please remove any items you wish to keep prior to March 1st. Thank you for your cooperation! It is greatly appreciated. ANYONE WANTING A COPY OF YOUR CONTRIBUTION RECORD TO THE PARISH FOR 2018 CAN CALL THE PARISH OFFICES DURING BUSINESS HOURS FROM 9:00 AM TO 4:00 PM. WE WILL BE HAPPY TO MAIL A COPY TO YOU.

6 Page Six February 10, 2019 March 9, 2019 Jesus is Lord! Saying Jesus is our friend sounds a bit too friendly or too informal. But, understanding what a friend is and what being a friend truly means bring clarity to the concept. We may have many acquaintances we call friends, however, Jesus calling us friends has a much deeper meaning. Come join all your friends as we sing, pray and worship our truest friend. Our Praise Band provides beautiful, motivational music as our voices blend together as one song of praise. 7 The Catholic Community of South Pittsburgh THE DEACON S CORNER In last week s gospel we read the conclusion of an early return of Jesus to Nazareth, his hometown. The scripture tells us that Jesus went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. There must have been many things with which Jesus radically disagreed with and may have even grated on him yet he went! The worship of the synagogue might have been far from perfect; yet Jesus never omitted to join himself to God s worshiping people on God s day. I know there have been times that I have found myself in a frame of mind where I think I m not going today. Now I am not speaking about the dangers of bad weather, age, or bad health. But those times of doubt, or those times when we are just mentally down and out. When those times come, and they do come, remember this is when we need God more than ever. No matter what might be grating on you or bringing you down, these are the times when we need to keep to our routine and place these things on the altar in worship of our loving God. Too often we forget we are of his design. He knows what drives us. He understands our ups and downs. There is no one better to be honest with about the things that bother us (and the things we love). So, as we move through the changes of the On Mission project, never withdraw. As going to Mass has been your custom for years, continue to come, as Jesus did. These are times to move a little closer to the Lord. ~Deacon Mike In Christ, We Are One, We Are Sent HOLY ANGELS CHRISTIAN MOTHERS & WOMEN S GUILD ST. Page Seven DEACON TIM S BOOK & MOVIE REVIEW SIGNS OF LIFE is a book written by famed Catholic scholar and author Scott Hahn. In this book, Scott Hahn explains the roots of twenty Catholic customs and he uses Biblical references in his explanation. In his introduction, Scott Hahn writes "This book, then, is a celebration of all things Catholic, and the Biblical doctrine that makes them Catholic. But it's more than that. It's a handbook, a how-to, a goodnatured defense, and a gentle nudge of all of us to do better, no matter where we are in our spiritual development." This excellent book explains most of the Sacraments, a few Sacramentals, and other Catholic concepts in a way that is easy for everyone to understand. Included in these are brief, but informative overviews on subjects such as candles, incense, fasting, relics and of course, the Rosary. This book is a quick, easy to read tour de force of Catholicism. While you don't "have" to use Sacramentals to be Catholic, they are a great assistance to us in gaining Grace from God. Unlike most of you, I need all of the help that I can get on my road to Salvation, and that is why I enthusiastically give Signs of Life, Five Beards out of Five Beards. This book will help both people and clergy know more about what we do, but also why we do it. ~Deacon Tim Live Jesus in our hearts...forever!
