4 When Is Earth Day? Earth Day is held on the same day every year April 22. The date was reportedly chosen by Gaylord Nelson, who served as the U.S. Senator for Wisconsin from 1963 to Nelson chose the day because it was one day after the Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and the Autumnal Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere. History of Earth Day During the 1960s, environmental protection became an important issue in the United States and around the world. Activists sought to raise awareness about environment and Cultural Organization that a worldwide day of awareness be established to this end. The following April 22, the first Earth Day celebration was held. Earth Day was celebrated worldwide for the first time with more than 140 nations participating. Since then, the number of countries that participate each year has steadily increased. Earth Day is widely considered the most commonly celebrated secular holiday in the world. Why we as Christians and Catholics Should Care Many Christians feel overwhelmed, confused, and even depressed about what to do about the environment and so many just don t bother. How green should we be? Should Christians try to preserve and care for the earth? The answer is a resounding YES! We are reminded in the Sacred Scriptures that; God created a marvelously rich and beautiful world that is indeed very good (Genesis 1:31). We honor God by gratefully caring for what HE created. Celebrating Earth Day at Home Many people choose to celebrate Earth Day by doing something good for the environment. People may volunteer their time to clean up trash or do another type of community service that benefits the planet. Others may use Earth Day as a time to consider making improvements to their homes to reduce waste or conserve Celebrations of Life s Journey energy or to take the time to educate themselves on environmental problems and conservation. Here are 10 ideas to care for the Lord s Creation. 1. Try to restrain for a month (or more) from shopping for unnecessary things used for entertainment. 2. Reduce energy consumption by unplugging energy sucking items, adjust your thermostat lower, using cold water only in your dishwasher, or drying clothes on the low-heat setting. 3. Try growing simple vegetables in a backyard garden (and share some of your harvest with those in need). 4. Replace harsh chemical cleaners with natural, cheaper alternatives like vinegar, baking soda, or lemon juice. 5. Try shopping at a local farmers market a few times or look for the grown local signs in the market. 6. Forego a birthday gift, or spending spree and instead use the money to plant a tree, bush or plants in your yard or community. 7. Find out about local recycling opportunities, then set up an indoor recycling bin and an outdoor compost area to reduce your family s trash output. 8. Eat simple, organic and non-chemically altered foods more. 9. Turn off the TV more frequently and instead spend more time outdoors, appreciating God s world. 10. Help keep God s creation clean by picking up trash in the streets or community (even if it is not yours.) You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make. 5 I Am The Good Shepherd The image of God as shepherd and his promise to lead his people in safety appears throughout the Bible. It is one of the most tender images of God that we can have as he assures us of his constant care and protection in our lives. This care applies not only to us individually as his children, with the shepherd carrying us in his arms, but also to us collectively as the Church, with God leading his flock in safety. This repeated promise to shepherd his people is our guarantee that God is in charge of his Church and that he leads us no matter the circumstances. As we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! we may wonder where the Lord is leading us. While it is natural for us to resist change, it is also an opportunity for us to grow in trust of God, our shepherd and guide, that he may transform us and his Church. As we learn the decisions regarding Parish Groupings and Clergy Teams next week may we call upon our Good Shepherd to lead us and our parishes in the years ahead. Did you know that Jesus is alive and well? Sometimes it seems like a far off fairy tail, especially when we are suffering. If Jesus is so good and He is with me, why does He allowing all this? Great question! The problem of evil actually has no perfect answer. C. S. Lewis has some brilliant writings on evil, but when face with the reality of it, all his writings felt like rubbish to him. Over the last thirty days or so I have been sick. To this day, we have not been able to find out what exactly is going on, which my doctor says is a good thing. I think she means it is good because all of the organ issues have been ruled out. It was perhaps the perfect storm of little things that added up. Who knows at this point. The good news is I am getting stronger every day. What is important is that no matter how I felt during this time of illness, I knew the Lord was with me. Sometimes I got angry and asked Him why He would not just heal me. Then I met other people who were suffering so much more than me and embracing their suffer with so much grace, that I felt ashamed of myself. Who am I and who are you that we should not have to bear some suffering? Jesus says, "take up your cross and follow me". In order to truly participate in the joy of the Risen Lord, we must share with Him the chalice of suffering! In other words, their is no resurrection without the cross! St. Paul says in Corinthians 4:10,11"(we) always carry about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body." We must remember and live this every day! 6 By Deacon Tim In an effort to continue on the theme of Divine Mercy, especially since I have received a few more positive comments or inquiries on this subject, my book review this week is the one that started it all... "Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul" by Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska. This diary of Jesus' appearances and discussions with a simple, Polish nun was originally published in How did it all start? On February 22, 1931, Jesus Christ appeared to Sister Faustins and told her about His wonderful message of Mercy for mankind. Saint Faustina tells us in her diary about Jesus' appearance to her on this date: "In the evening, when I was in my cell, I became aware of the Lord Jesus clothed in a white garment. One hand was raised in blessing, the other was touching the garment at the breast. From the opening of the garment at the breast there came forth two large rays, one red and the other pale. In silence I gazed intently at the Lord; my soul was overwhelmed with fear, but also with great joy. After a while Jesus said to me, 'paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the inscription: Jesus, I trust in You. The message of Mercy from Jesus is that God loves us - all of us - no matter how great our sins. He wants everyone to know that His mercy is greater than any sin that we have committed. This book is both intense and moving. In addition to Jesus's conversation with her and His desire for the world to know about Divine Mercy, St Faustina was also taken to see what Hell looks like. In my sermon (there is a difference between a sermon and a homily) on Divine Mercy Sunday, I read part of her diary entry about her experience of seeing Hell. I give this book Five Beards out of Five Beards, but also caution that some may not be ready for such an intense and blunt book. God's mercy is available to everyone. Just like your ABC's, it is a simple path; for His mercy. Be merciful to others completely trust in Jesus. Live Jesus in our hearts.. 7 Hope Reborn A Night of Glory April Festival of Praise The theme of the April 14 Festival of Praise was New Life. The emcee for the evening was Fr. Tom Galvin who led us into the evening with words of inspiration, telling us that Jesus invites us into Himself, just as He invited Thomas to touch the wounds in His hands. The witness speaker was Jim Zern who is the head of the Festival of Praise Leadership Team. Jim spoke of his former ordinary life as a husband and father and said he was processing through life, but was not especially happy. That all changed eight years ago when he attended the Gathering of Catholic Men and found his new life. As he went to confession for the first time in many years, he had a deep spiritual and emotional experience. His confessor told him, You have found your way home. Jim then understood how God loves him and began to get more involved in his faith. Four years later, while helping to lead an Evangelical Conference at St. Gabriel s, he realized that he needed Jesus in his life. Recognizing that Jesus arms were wide open, he knew he only had to say yes. Now, having Jesus in his heart, Jim wants to show Him to others. The night s presider was Fr. Jay Donahue, pastor of SS. Simon & Jude Parish in Greentree. He spoke about Jesus resurrection, saying that it should transform us like it transformed Thomas. He talked about the Easter Vigil and how it gives us clues that the resurrection is relevant in our lives today. The first clue is fire, representing the light that replaced the darkness of the empty tomb. We must let that light penetrate our hearts. The second clue from the Easter Vigil is the multiple readings, which are God s love letters to us. We need to let those words fill our souls. The third clue is Baptism and Confirmation representing new life. In Baptism we are configured with Jesus Christ. Jesus wants to draw the darkness of our lives into his love. We should consider the areas of our lives that can be transformed by Him. As always, the homily was followed by adoration and procession of the Blessed Sacrament while the Praise Band led us in song. Saturday May 19, :30 PM - 9:00 PM The Festival of Praise for May will not be held at our parish. This month we have the honor of, again, celebrating the Festival at Saint Paul Cathedral. This service will be presented as part of the Vigil of Pentecost service that is being planned for May 19, At this point, the Festival of Praise segment of the Vigil is scheduled to take place from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM, however, the Vigil will last all night and is still in the planning stage. The heart of the Vigil and Festival of Praise theme is capturing the movement of the apostles from gathering in fear to going out in love, that was experienced in the Upper Room. We hope to continue to grow our family and provide support for those who are dealing daily with the insanity of addiction; those who are friends or family members of an addict. As we have stated, these meetings are to provide input to those who are suffering and wish to learn through the experiences live by others. Remember we maintain anonymity. SYLVESTER SCHOOL PLAY St. Sylvester School The Lion King Jr. April 27 & 28 7 PM Brentwood High School Now that winter seems to be over we can stop and think about all that happened, especially the bigger storms that hit the east coast. We see pictures of enormous trees that have fallen from the heavy storms. When we see this we might pause to wonder which exact snowflake was responsible for taking down a big tree? Or which rain drop was the one that up rooted a large tree? It can be the same way with sin. This is how sin works to destroy us. St. John tells us that if we say, we are without sin, we deceive ourselves. At the beginning of each Mass we confess that we are sinners and ask for God s mercy. Like the tiny beautiful snow flake, sin can have a way of creeping up on us. We tell ourselves oh, that s no so bad, or everyone is doing it, or even no one will know. But these sins, like snowflakes, keep piling up. We have just celebrated Christ s great sacrifice to forgive our sins, and shake them off the branches of our soul before they become destructive. Continue to use Reconciliation, to remove the weight of sin, and continue to improve your lives, and with God s grace, be the best version of a good Christian you can be.
