4 Page Four December 30, 2018 An epiphany is often described as a light bulb moment when something is suddenly illuminated, revealed that changes our outlook. It seems that lately, I have been having many more epiphany moments in my life both practical and spiritual. There are times when I have an ah ha moment that I feel the Lord uses to reveal something He wants me to come to know or understand. Some of those moments happen through some of you. I find myself becoming more aware of those little gifts and how I can use them in my life and in my ministry. The Epiphany we celebrate today refers to the manifestation of the divine nature of Jesus and is often referred to as the Feast of Three Kings. As I thought about today, I thought about the long journey of the three kings. I started to look back on my own journey in this life. I wander around the desert, often mistaking one sign for another sometimes making mistakes. I keep my feet moving even when I do not know in what direction I am going to travel. There are times I travel but cannot remember where I ve just been or where I m supposed to be. I sometimes feel lost and then an awareness occurs at the oddest of times through the oddest of circumstances and situations and sometimes through the oddest of people. What I like about today s gospel is that after recognizing Jesus and acknowledging their awareness of who He is for this world, they set about returning the favor. They shared their treasures with this family. When we experience our own epiphanies, do we then share our treasures, the results of those epiphanies with others? Do we see Jesus in the faces of the hungry, and the bodies of the sick? Does our journey take us to awareness that Jesus is present everywhere we turn, everywhere we look, and everywhere we go? Do we respond today to that awareness with the same measure of gratitude the magi did so many years ago? There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as if everything is. ~ Albert Einstein ~ As much as I would love to visit every home in our parish community, I simply cannot however, I do pray this blessing on all of you and your homes this Epiphany. Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only-begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless our homes and houses and all who inhabit them. Fill us with the light of Christ, that our concern for others may reflect your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Celebrations of Life s Journey Fr Steve Together we welcome: Who were baptized into our Faith & Family. Congratulations to the Parents & Godparents! 5 The Catholic Community of South Pittsburgh Readings for the week of JANUARY 6, 2019 First Reading Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The Lord shines upon you (Isaiah 60:1-6). Psalm Lord, every nation on earth will adore you (Psalm 72). Second Reading The Gentiles are coheirs, copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6). Gospel Magi from the east arrived, looking for the newborn king of the Jews (Matthew 2:1-12). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 1 Jn 2:18-21; Ps 96:1-2, 11-13; Jn 1:1-18 Tuesday: Nm 6:22-27; Ps 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8; Gal 4:4-7; Lk 2:16-21 Wednesday: 1 Jn 2:22-28; Ps 98:1-4; Jn 1:19-28 Thursday: 1 Jn 2:29 3:6; Ps 98:1, 3cd-6; Jn 1:29-34 Friday: 1 Jn 3:7-10; Ps 98:1, 7-9; Jn 1:35-42 Saturday: 1 Jn 3:11-21; Ps 100:1b-5; Jn 1:43-51 Sunday: Is 60:1-6; Ps 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-13; HOME IS WHERE THE FAMILY IS The idea, dream, and reality of family is so strong and durable that we use it to describe all that is best about human gatherings. We speak of the family of nations, of our church and parish families. The greatest compliment we can pay a friend or gracious host is to say that we feel at home with them, we feel part of the family. Families are the first crucibles in which love is tested and tempered. Jesus himself was one of three people who lived in the shadow of each other. This family, like our own, did not always get it right, but they always tried to. These three amateurs were on holiday, and one of them got lost. Two were worried sick and took great measures to find the third, a boy after all, who was seeking the meaning of his calling. He found his vocation to do his Father s work but he also returned home with his parents. Page Five FATHER STEVE JANUARY 4TH THE BIG 50! NEW YEAR S MASS SCHEDULE NEW YEAR S EVE VIGIL 4:00 PM ST. Cut out the invitation below and give it to someone special. To: From: This is a personal and heartfelt invitation from me and my family of the CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF SOUTH PITTSBURGH PARISH to come and join us each weekend at Church. Come to Me Saturday January 12, :00 pm to 8:30 pm The theme for January s Festival of Praise will be based on the scripture passage Philippians 2: 5-11 where Saint Paul tells us that, although Jesus was God, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death -- the supreme servant. This celebration will be based on Jesus, and helping individuals to encounter him. We welcome back Father Tom Galvin who will join us as presider and inspirational speaker. Check out the Festival of Praise page in the Holy Apostles Parish website for information about this celebration of Jesus. There you will find many pictures and videos of previous services. Our Praise Band Repertoire now includes more than fifty beautiful songs and continues to grow monthly. Many of these songs can be viewed and listened to on You Tube as performed by the recording artist. 7 The Catholic Community of South Pittsburgh THE DEACON S CORNER We are now in the season of the infamous New Year s resolution. We are always looking to improve ourselves each year at this time. I am afraid that within a few weeks though we will be looking at these resolutions as: What goes in one year and out the other. Don t take me wrong, it is good to work on self-improvement and efforts to renew things like diets, removing unhealthy habits, etc. A suggestion is to focus your resolutions on spiritual improvements. Do this by looking to improve something with your renewed changes in life and things you give up. An example might be to put the cell phones away at meal time, join in family conversation, and be sure to pray for each meal. Another might be to turn the TV off but work to improve a relationship with that extra time you now have: with your spouse, family, or a friend. Or don t talk as much and work on listening more to others. Always include a daily prayer for guidance in all this. Including God s grace and love will always help. When you fail (and we all do) put the failure behind you, learn from the failure, and re-energize with a prayer for help. Then take on that resolution one more time. This is a time that can result in spiritual growth, and a better relationship with our Lord. Begin the new year working to make it the best one yet. Happy New Year! Deacon Mike In Christ: We Are One, We Are Sent MARCH FOR LIFE~BUS TRIP Deacon Tim is organizing a bus trip for the 2019 March for Life, which will take place on Friday, January 18th in Washington, DC. If you are interested in more information on this bus trip, contact Deacon Tim at deacontim@verizon.net. Since the 1973 Supreme Court cases, Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, which legalized abortion-on-demand in our country, over 60 million lives have been lost to abortion. Ending abortion and promoting a culture of life is why we march each year. Deacon Tim is trying to determine which size bus to reserve for our group. If you are interested in joining us, please contact him. If you cannot join us, please pray for our safety on the trip and for the end to abortion. "Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer Page Seven The Holy Family The bible tells us very little about the family life of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as they formed their home in Nazareth. We know that Jesus was presented in the temple in accordance with the custom of the law, that he grew strong and was filled with wisdom, and that he stayed behind at the temple in Jerusalem to discourse with the elders and scholars of the law. Much else is left to the tradition of our faith and to our imagination. The Holy Family was certainly unconventional, composed of a virgin mother, a child conceived by the Holy Spirit who is the Son of God, and a foster father who loved the child as if he was his own. Yet, we hold them up as the example of family life for us who seek to love those God has placed in our lives. The Holy Family also becomes our inspiration as we form a family of faith in our parishes and parish groupings. While our faith communities undergo change as part of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative, the work of building up the family of the Church continues in earnest. May the example and intercession of the Holy Family support us in this important work. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. ST. This is an excellent DVD for children and adults who would like to learn more about the real Saint Nicholas. By watching this DVD, everyone will learn about the bold and amazing things that he did to demonstrate his strong faith and love for others. Yes Virginia and even Virgil, there is a Santa Claus. Saint Nicholas was a real person that lived in Turkey and went on to become Bishop. Almost everything that we know about Santa Claus comes from two separate people named Nicholas, but most of them were truly done by this Saint Nicholas who loved the Lord and the less fortunate. In this documentary, noted historian Mark Wilson will travel to Turkey and Italy to teach us about Saint Nicholas. Yes, Nicholas did stand up for truth and briefly suffered for his conviction. St. Nicholas followed the words of our Lord by praying every day, by fasting, and by performing good deeds. God worked so many miracles through Nicholas that people began to call him a wonder-worker. His contemporaries were so inspired by his life of service, that many of them started to live lives filled with good deeds. All of us, especially young boys and men, need strong role models to look up to and Nicholas is a great role model. St Nicholas is an excellent example of how to show the love of God, without caving in to the pressures and errors of the current age. I proudly give this DVD Five Beards out of Five Beards and hope that you make watching this DVD part of your annual CHRISTMAS tradition. ~Deacon Tim Live Jesus in our hearts.forever! Dear Parishioners, The Saint John Vianney Food Pantry volunteers and recipients thank you for the contributions you make to our account at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food bank. Each month we receive a generous donation from Holy Apostles parish that enables us to purchase food at a great discount. The dollars that you send us really stretch. The food pantry operates from the Allentown neighborhood where it has been for many years because parishioners like you provide support. Here is some information about the St. John Vianney Food pantry. The pantry distributes food each month on the first and third Friday from noon until 1:45 p.m. The volunteers come from parish groupings that include Holy Apostle, St. Mary of the Mount, Prince of Peace, St. Sylvester and more. The pantry serves over 200 individuals each month without regard to race, religion, ethnicity or any other form of discrimination. The clients are low income individuals and families and include some who are elderly, disabled, veterans, immigrants and unemployed. The pantry is a member agency of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Your contributions will be used to purchase food from the Food Bank. God bless you and your families during Advent and Christmas. The St. John Vianney Food Pantry.
