4 Celebrations of Life s Journey That They may be One Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying: Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one. So many times I wish you could see what I see from the altar! I seem to be saying this a lot lately. Since I began my ministry here five May s ago, (May 1, 2014) I have witnessed an awesome transformation that continues to change and expand every week. I am so humbled and inspired to be a part of this transformation because my ministry and faith continue to grow each and every day. When I sit in the presider s chair on any of our four altars looking out into our churches, I do not see four separate churches worshiping in the same parish. I see a living example of one unified family of faith who loves one another they way John the evangelist encourages us to in the second reading when he says, Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another. No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfection in us. In this is love brought to perfection among us, From the altar, I see a family of believers who stand together and witness to God s presence in our lives and in our parish. A family of parishioners who show that we are children of God because we know God who is love itself. I see a parish family who gathers each weekend to celebrate and share in the gift of life and love that God gave us in his son Jesus. I see a family of believers who strive to move beyond the challenges our church faces with an authentic sense of courage, collaboration and compassion, because of the love you have for one another and for your faith. It is a Christian love that is proof to others that Holy Apostles Parish truly knows God and they can see God in Holy Apostles Parish. Our parish has grown stronger as one community. Just think! It is an answer to Jesus we just heard in today s Gospel when Jesus prays for his disciples and for those who will follow them. That is us. His prayer is that they may be one. His prayer for us today is still the same, that we may be one. Sure some may say we had no choice or that it was divine intervention that brought us together but however we look at it, our response to the circumstances before us is what makes the difference and you have made a difference by loving one another and Letting Go and Letting God. Happy Mother s Day Mothers remain an important part of one's life even if and after you lose contact with her. There are times you just sit back and think about the things you learned from your mother. Often times as I am cooking, I suddenly think of how my mother used to prepare it. More and more, I seem to catch yourself doing or saying something my mother did or said that drove me crazy and I think O No! I m acting like mom! in my family we call them Marie-ism s But there are moments that reminded us about her influence on our lives. Those crazy Marie-ism s always bring a smile to my face. Mothers can become a part of your psyche, as special memories. Those memories are good reasons for you to thank her. Not everyone is able to share such memories of their mothers do to the circumstances of life. It can be very difficult and sometimes painful to honor thy mother when there are wounds that have not yet healed. For those mothers we can pray that God will bring healing and forgiveness for the mother she was, and pray for the mother she could have been. "Life began with waking up and loving my mother's face." Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This "Hope Reborn" Festival of Praise & Pentecost Vigil will be a night of glory, filled with healing, hope, and rebirth for our Diocese! The event belongs to the entire Diocese, so I invite you now to claim it as your own! If you are hurting, allow the Lord to heal you! If you are despondent, let God restore your faith and hope and love. If you are afraid of things to come, pray for the Holy Spirit to give you courage! If you are excited and on fire, share your joy with those around you and pray for healing and hope for your neighbors! When the disciples were gathered in the Upper Room after Jesus died, they must have felt afraid and hopeless. When Jesus appeared to his disciples, their hope was restored because all of their hope was in him! Our hope cannot be taken from us, because Jesus Christ is our hope! Every Parish has been praying for the Lord to renew our church through the On Mission Prayer and now is the time to come together and see that we are not alone in our desire to see the Church of Pittsburgh on fire with the love and power of God! After Pentecost, Peter preached in the power of the Holy Spirit and won 3,000 people to Jesus in a few hours! Let's beg the Holy Spirit to renew and fill us and the entire Church with His power this Pentecost!!! Tell your family and friends to pray for Hope to be born anew! Rejoice with me, because a New Pentecost is unfolding within the Church of Pittsburgh, and a New Evangelization is about to explode!!! Everyone is needed!!! 6 PRE-CANA MARRIAGE PREPARATION By Deacon Tim Song of Bernadette is a 1943 movie about the life of Saint Bernadette Soubbirous and how the appearances by the Blessed Mother changed her life and her town. Bernadette is a simple, but sickly French peasant girl who one had visions of a "beautiful lady" near her home in the village of Lourdes. From that moment on, her life and her village were never the same. Jennifer Jones won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Bernadette, and this film won a total of four Academy Awards. The number of Academy Awards won by this Catholic movie shows both the greatness of this production, and also how much of a different world we live in now as compared to then. In addition to Jennifer Jones' role as Bernadette, other stars were very convincing in their roles in this movie as well. Charles Bickford plays the priest who doubted Bernadette at first, but went on to be a supporter. Gladys Cooper did a wonderful job in her role as the old nun that could not accept the young Bernadette or her story. Vincent Price, always excellent in playing the villain, did a great job in his role as the prosecutor who doubted Bernadette. This film is based upon the true story of Bernadette, but also the book by Franz Werfel, a Jew who was pursued, but eventually escaped the Nazis.; Franz learned about the story of Bernadette while hiding in Lourdes and he made a pact with God that if he made it to freedom, he would write this story and make it known to everyone. Fortunately for all of us, especially all the people that have been cured by the miraculous waters of Lourdes, he was able to escape. I give this film Beards out of Five Beards for its simple, but beautiful telling of this amazing story. Live Jesus in our hearts.. FOOD BANK COLLECTIONS Holy Apostles Christian Mothers & Guild would like to thank the people of our Parish for your extreme generosity throughout the year when we collected for the Carrick Foodbank and The Passionist Nuns. It was greatly appreciated by us and the organizations. We would also like to thank the many people that assisted us with the collection of monetary and food donations at all the masses and sites in the parish. We will not be collecting throughout the months of June, July and August but will resume on September 8th Thank you again for your continued support. As You Sent Me into the World, So I Sent Them into the World. In the creation story we are told that God made human beings in His image. This doesn t mean that we are exact clones or identical twins of God, but rather that each of us, in light of our unique gifts and characteristics, are created to reflect the vibrant life and loving face of God to others. God s hand in our lives doesn t end in creating us. Throughout our lives God gives us purpose and fills us with the gifts we need to fulfill that purpose. The challenge for us is for us to know ourselves as God knows us. Through prayer and in humility we are invited to see clearly God s will for our lives and all he has provided so that his will and our lives may be complete. God hasn t randomly or thoughtlessly placed us in this world to create a reality for ourselves. He has sent us into the world with a specific task in mind that we might love others and build up his kingdom in the Church, making it ever more Alive! 7 First Communion On Sunday, May 6, thirty-four boys and girls received their first Holy Communion at St. Basil Church. Fr. Steve and Fr. Michael Roche concelebrated the Mass (for those who might not remember, Fr. Mike was our parochial vicar from ). Thanks to catechists Ruthann Hueston, Conrad Butler, and Marty Murawski, who prepared the children for this special day and to Lori Mandela and Rosina Zilionis for planning and coordinating the ceremony. Hope Reborn A Night of Glory Pentecost Vigil Saturday May 19, :30 PM - 9:00 PM The Festival of Praise for May will be celebrated at Saint Paul Cathedral in conjunction with an all-night Vigil of Pentecost service. Bishop Zubik knows that the transition phase of On Mission for the Church Alive! will be challenging for many throughout our Diocese and he is calling the whole Diocese together for an all-night Pentecost Vigil at the Cathedral on May 19 th. Pittsburgh Mercy Intellectual Disabilities Services Alternative Training & Employment Center, a day support, employment, and training program for adults with intellectual disabilities, invites the public to attend the 3rd Annual Blooming on Baum Plant Sale on Friday, May 25, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Center, 4749 Baum Boulevard, Pittsburgh, PA (Bloomfield). We will start with a Festival of Praise at 1:10 PM, followed by Liturgy of the Word at 1:30 PM. We will process through the city of Pittsburgh before returning to Epiphany, where we will crown Our Lady of Fatima and pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. The afternoon will conclude with Benediction. For those unable to march, Holy Rosary will be prayed at Epiphany while the others march. For those who wish to stay, there will be prayers for healing. 10 THE DEACON S CORNER Deacon s Corner We have renewed our Nar-Anon meetings and they are every Monday. We hope to continue to grow our family and provide support for those who are dealing daily with the insanity of addiction; those who are friends or family members of an addict. As we have stated, these meetings are to provide input to those who are suffering and wish to learn through the experiences live by others. Remember we maintain anonymity. William Makepeace Thackeray I am unaware of your beliefs around gun control, and I am not taking a side with this article, but I read a little story for thought. Sister Catherine had just returned home from Sunday evening service when she was startled by a burglar. With great biblical authority she yelled, "Stop! Acts 2: 38. Now this scripture tells us we should turn away from our sins and repent. Well the thief stopped dead in his tracks. Then the woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done. As the officer cuffed the man, he asked the burglar, " Why did you stop your burgling? All the old lady did was yell a Bible verse at you." "Bible verse?" replied the crook. " She said she had an axe and two.38s!" There is great power in God s word if we just take the time to read it and apply it to our lives. Take a little time today and begin reading the Acts of the Apostles. It tells us so much about the development of God s church. It tells us how salvation, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, now extends to us, the Gentiles. It describes how, by his divinely chosen representatives, the Apostles, it is to be spread throughout the world. We too have the task of spreading God s word, but we need to read it first.
