4 Today is the fourth Sunday of our Lenten preparation. The first reading is a bleak reminder of our sinfulness, our deafness to those who warn us, and the consequences of our continuing arrogance and destructiveness. The psalm tells us what it is like to be separated from the love of God. We weep and we remember. Ephesians offers us hope. God is merciful even though our sins have destroyed our lives. God saves us, not because of who we are but because of who God is. God's love raises us up from our sinful despair. John reminds us that although we deserve condemnation because of our repeated sinfulness, God so loved the world that God did what Abraham was asked to do. God sacrificed Jesus, the beloved Son, that we might be saved. COME TO THE LIGHT If our works cannot save us, then why are we doing all this hard work and sacrifice during Lent? Traditionally we were asked to give up something during Lent so that we might experience the loss and deprivation that the Old Testament talks about when we are estranged from God. More recently we have been asked to do something affirmative, to add something good to our lives instead of taking something bad away. Either way works because both are just means of waking us up to the way we live our lives, sometimes thoughtlessly indulgent, sometimes indifferent, but all too often isolated from what is at the center of God's life, i.e., love and sacrifice. Lent is a chance to live our lives as Jesus lived his. Jesus lived in the light of love, truth, and sacrifice. Lent is a chance to find that light in our own lives. Lenten Poem Lent is a time to take time to let the power Of our faith story take hold of us, A time to let the events get up And walk around us, A time to intensify our living unto Christ, A time to hover over the thoughts of our hearts, A time to place our feet in the streets of Jerusalem or to walk along the sea and Listen to His Word, A time to touch His robe And feel the healing surge through us, A time to ponder and a time to wonder. Lent is a time to allow A fresh new taste of God! Perhaps we re afraid to have time to think, For thoughts come unbidden. Perhaps we re afraid too face our future Knowing our past. Give us courage, O God, To hear your word And to read our living into it. 5 HOLY APOSTLES LADIES OF CHARITY LENTEN NAIL PROJECT This Lent, the Holy Apostles Ladies of Charity is sponsoring a weekly collection drive at all weekend Masses at all Churches on behalf of social service agencies which serve those needs in our local area. The weekend of March 17 & 18 for Angels Place, which supports young parents and their children. Wish List: Child Size spoons and forks, sippy cups, paper towels, tall kitchen garbage bags, Kleenex, Dixie cups, paper plates, 100% Juice boxes, fruit cups, raisens, applesauce, snack crackers, Chex cereals, gluten free snacks, letter size copy paper. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Dear Parish Family, Have you ever been challenged to give more than you feel you are able to give? Pope Francis calls this giving out of our need. Meaning that we need what we have, but we give it to someone who needs it even more than we do! During this Lenten Season we remember that without almsgiving/works of mercy, our prayer and fasting are not very fruitful. One of the Church Fathers basically said that once you have what you need, the rest of your money belongs to the poor. Do not withhold from them what is theirs. This is a powerful statement, and it makes sense. Everything belongs to God. He gives some abundance and others He allows to be in need, and He expects those who have been given much to love much! So let us take after our Heavenly Father and give away our most prized possessions for the sake of those in need! 6 2018 PRE-CANA By Deacon Tim "The Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of St Therese of Liseux" is the autobiography of one of the most-loved saint in modern times, "The Little Flower". She is also known as "Therese of the Child Jesus" and is a Doctor of the Church. This book is widely considered to be one of the most powerful autobiographies of the Saints. In her autobiography, St Therese opens up to everyone her "Little Way" of living. This Little Way is a type of spiritual childhood and her elevator to Heaven. She did the ordinary with extraordinary love. St Therese was the youngest of nine children. She was born in 1873 and was happy, precocious and sensitive during her childhood. Her family was very religious, but they suffered at the early death of her mother. Her strong faith was deepened even more by reading Thomas a Kempis' "The Imitation of Christ". She prayed intently for the conversion of a murderer, and just before he was executed, he grabbed a Crucifix and kissed it three times. She started a campaign to join the convent at a very young age. This campaign took her all the way to meeting with Pope Leo XIII. More than an autobiography, this book can be seen as a love story between St Therese and our Lord. This book is also an excellent example to all of us of how to overcome the small and large trials of our own lives and live a simple, but loving Christian life. As she said "My mission - to make God loved - will begin after my death. I will spend my Heaven doing good on earth. I will let fall a shower of roses". I give this book Five Beards out of Five Beards. It belongs in every Catholic home. Live Jesus in our hearts... Forever! Deacon Tim God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE 40 Days for Life is the largest internationally coordinated pro-life mobilization in history. It is helping people in local communities end the injustice of abortion through prayer, fasting, community outreach and a focused 40 day prayer vigil. Our vigil is outside Planned Parenthood, 933 Liberty Avenue, downtown Pittsburgh, through March 25. There is always a shift manager there from 7am to 7pm. Any amount of time or effort will make a difference. Our parish will have a special vigil on Monday, March 12 from 11am to 3pm. Understanding all the planning that goes into a wedding, advanced planning for the 2018 Spring Pre-Cana Program at Holy Apostles Parish has begun. It will be held at the Parish Office Building at St. Albert the Great. It will begin on Friday, March 16 with registration at 6:30 PM at Holy Apostles Parish Office Building at St. Albert the Great (3198 Schieck St., Pittsburgh, PA and end on Saturday, March 17 at 3:30 PM. Refreshments, program materials, and lunch on Saturday are all included. There is a donation of $60 per couple for this essential training. There will be another offering on September 14 & 15. For God So Loved the World God the Father s great act of love for us, his children, was sending his only Son, Jesus, into the world. By coming to earth, Christ humbles himself by tak ing on human flesh, yet he is able to show us a new and vibrant way of life by teaching love without condition and mercy in all circumstances. The ultimate sign of this love comes as Jesus takes our sins, the sins of all the world upon himself and reconciles us to the Father as he suffers and dies on the cross. Then follows the light of the resurrection in which the gates of heaven are flung open so that we can live with God for ever. And while these moments happened once and for all some 2,000 years ago, God s love for us did not end with the death of his Son. As Christ remains with us in the sacraments, so the love of God is alive and active for us in the same, powerful way. The love of God endures forever! As we prepare for the changes to come as part of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative, we are called to remember that God is always at work for us and through us. While we may face challenges, it is God who will strengthen the Church, so great is his love for us. Let us cooperate with him in the days to come to help the Church grow. 7 Funeral Ministry "There are some who bring a light so great to the world that even after they have gone, the light remains." I bought a plaque with this quote for my mom after my dad died. It was so appropriate because his light has never diminished even after 11 years. Most of us have suffered the loss of a loved one and, while a funeral mass is uplifting in that it celebrates the deceased s entrance into eternal life, it is also a sad occasion for the living. It s human nature to grieve for someone close to us but, in reality, we are grieving for ourselves because we will never share our lives with that person in his/her human form again. Unless you ve attended a funeral mass at Holy Apostles Parish, you might not be aware of our Funeral Ministry. It consists of a group of parishioners who pray the rosary before funeral liturgies and hold lighted candles as the casket enters and leaves the church. The candles are a reminder of our baptismal vows and the flame symbolizes hope for eternal life. This ministry began primarily as a Ladies of Charity service. Previously, St. Norbert s had a group who prayed the rosary before funerals and St. Albert s had a group that held the lit candles at their church s funerals. Then these two combined and expanded to include others who wished to participate. Now, every funeral in all four of our churches is attended by some of these dedicated parishioners who pray the rosary and hold the candles. And, as you well know, there are many funerals at Holy Apostles Parish, so these participants are kept quite busy. Anyone is welcome to serve in this meaningful ministry. I ve been told that family members of the deceased frequently stop and thank the people in the funeral ministry. God bless all who give of their time to honor others. In April we will once again celebrate the love we have for our Father at our Festival of Praise. This is a beautiful opportunity for us to offer praise to Jesus and receive His love as His beloved children. We know that Jesus is always there for us, but sometimes we do lose focus. With the joy of Easter in our hearts, we remember that He is our salvation. Come and see what Jesus has in mind for all of us. We hope to continue to grow our family and provide support for those who are dealing daily with the insanity of addiction; those who are friends or family members of an addict. It was yelling at me that I needed to call a given phone number (a scam), or everything would be erased and my world would be at an end. I tried all I knew, and nothing worked. So I contacted Microsoft who logged in and cleared the virus. They pointed out a security update I had missed and put me back into operation in short order. When it was over I was quite relieved and had the proper security running again. As I took a deep breath and refocused on the Deacon s Corner, I thought this is how reconciliation works for our soul. As our sins mount up, often without our awareness, our conscience begins to yell at us, and tells us we better dial in and get things straightened out. We have missed a security update somewhere. And so we examine our conscience and identify those events, those files that are corrupting us. We take them to Jesus in the great Sacrament of Reconciliation. Christ clears those corrupted files, and with penance our security is updated. We are now ready to go back to serving our Lord. Take the opportunity this Lenten season and have those bad files purged and get back to a clear conscience and loving our Lord as He loves us.
