4 Palm Sunday is one of those Sundays that parish churches seem to be fuller. More people come out to attend the Mass, often dressed in red and waiting for and wanting their palm branches. I remember as a child, sitting at Mass with my mother, trying to weave my palm branches into something creative. I didn t really understand the significance of what the palm represented. Palm Sunday is a day that we hear the Passion story, reading our parts as the crowd, and maybe even waving our palm branches as we imagine ourselves welcoming Jesus into the holy city. Imagine for a moment, being a part of that scene as Jesus rides the donkey down the hill as we join the crowd shouting, "Hosanna! "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel." If you were there, would you have taken off your coats, as well, and spread them out on the road for the King to ride over as he made His triumphal entry? Even as we cheer Him on, we know where this is going and what will happen to Him. In just a few day another crowd will be crying out as an angry mob will call for Pontius Pilate to, Crucify! Crucify him! But we wouldn't be so fickle as to be part of that crowd, or would we? There were two groups following Jesus, those who had followed him from Galilee listening to His teachings and those who were in town for Passover, who were easily swayed by charges of heresy led by the temple leaders who hated him. Every moment of every day, we have a choice to faithfully follow Christ and cheer for Him or to be swayed by those who hate him. We all have the choice to speak and act in ways that are true to the teachings of Christ and cheer Him on but we also have the choice to speak and act like we have never heard of Him or know His teachings. What choice will you make? I personally invite and encourage you to come and Experience the wonderful celebration of Holy Week. There are so many sights, sounds, and smells that are a part of this, the holiest week of the year. We begin the Easter Triduum on Holy Thursday and it includes, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday. The Great Easter Vigil is the high point of the Triduum. The word Triduum comes from the Latin word meaning "three days." The Triduum celebrates the core of our faith, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Thus, the Triduum commemorates the Institution of the Eucharist, the passion, crucifixion, death of the Lord, his descent to the dead, and finally his glorious resurrection on Easter Sunday morning. Fr Steve Celebrations of Life s Journey Together we welcome all children who were baptized into our Faith & Family Congratulations to the Parents & Godparents If you need to prepare for the baptism of your infant, and you have not had the preparation seminar, please contact Deacon Mike at (412) , extension 206 to schedule a time. All are welcome to the Cathedral to receive this special Blessing imparted by our bishops as they also take the opportunity to thank families for the beautiful witness of love and faith that they share with us. Do you ever feel like a hypocrite? Well, you are a hypocrite, and so is the rest of humanity! According to merrium-webster.com, a hypocrite is "a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings". We are all, to some extent hypocrites, because we profess the Gospel and yet we reject God's Mercy in so many ways. One of the most profound lines I have ever heard in a movie is "You can't handle the truth." When Jesus was put on trial, He was the only one who stood in the truth, and was authentic to who He was. The Pharisees were supposed to be leading people to God, but they just led everyone to themselves. The people who cheered for Jesus a few days before, now got caught up in hatred for him as their ignorance blinded them. Marcus Pontius Pilatus was the governor who tried Jesus and he knew that Jesus was innocent, but out of fear he betrayed the truth and approved injustice. Jesus was the only human being who ever lived to accept the fullness of our humanity! He is the only one who did not give in to temptation and sin! During this most Holy Week, let us ask ourselves, "what is the truth that I cannot handle, or refuse to accept from God?" If you do not believe that you are God's beloved son or daughter and that He is well pleased with you, start there! Let us surrender the lies about how bad we are and accept our weaknesses so that we do not have to sin so much to create a false world around us. If we do not let some part of us die this week, then will we not experience any particular part of us rising on Easter Sunday. Never forget, the only place where the real and the ideal exist together in this life is on the Cross! So let us embrace our crosses, our weakness, the truth, and begin to truly live!!! 6 MARK YOUR CALENDAR By Deacon Tim The Catechism of the Catholic Church is both a book and a wonderful gift to all Catholics from St Pope John Paul II. Originally published in 1992, it is the first new Catechism of the Catholic Church in over 400 years. This book was produced while John Paul II was Pope, and with the guidance of then Cardinal Ratzinger, who later became Pope Benedict XVI. This book has an index, cross-references and footnotes that allows the reader to grow in a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Catholic Faith. This book is a reference book, so it is not meant to be read as a novel. That being said, as I often mention in my homilies, if you read just two pages of this every day, you will grow in your understanding of our Catholic Faith. Everything is covered and explained: What we believe (the Profession of Faith), The Seven Sacraments, Our Life in Christ, The Ten Commandments and Christian Prayer. Whether you do the Deacon suggested two page a day method, or use it to "Hunt and Peck" by topics that you are interested in learning about, you will be well pleased with what you learn from this book. I heartily give this book Five Beards out of Five Beards. This is a wonderful gift from St Pope John Paul II, but like all gifts, it must be used to be appreciated. Live Jesus in our hearts.. 7 Blessing of the Baskets Most of you are aware that our parish has a blessing of food every year on Holy Saturday. But do you know what is behind that tradition? My Slovak grandmother took her food basket to be blessed every year, but I never knew the details (and she couldn t tell me because she didn t speak English!) The tradition began in countries with Slavic heritage, such as Poland, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, Russia, the Ukraine, and the Balkans. Baskets filled with food were carried to church on Holy Saturday around noon where the priest said a prayer of blessing and sprinkled the baskets with holy water. The assembly of the basket was not random. In most cases, the basket was lined with a white linen cloth into which the food was placed. Every family had its own tradition, but the types of food included were similar and all were symbolic. Bread symbolizes Christ the bread of life. Can include braided bread, sweet breads or paska bread. Butter often shaped into a lamb, it symbolizes the goodness of Christ and the richness of salvation. Bacon represents the abundance of God s mercy. Cheese symbol of moderation. Eggs hard-cooked eggs (dyed or plain) represent new life and resurrection. Ham symbolizes abundance, great joy, and that all things are made new in Christ. Sausage sausage links symbolize that Christ s resurrection broke the chains of death. Horseradish represents the bitterness of Christ s Passion. Salt reminds us that we are the salt of the earth. Sweets symbolize the promise of good things to come, that is, Eternal Life. Candle represents Jesus, the Light of the World. The basket was sometimes adorned with colorful ribbon, some greenery (usually boxwood) and then covered with a linen cloth to represent the shroud of Jesus. Sometimes this cloth was embroidered with symbols of the Resurrection and the family passed the cloth down from one generation to the next. Following the blessing, the family returned home and refrigerated the food until after Mass on Easter morning when every member of the family sampled each of the foods. Regardless of your ethnic background, this is a lovely Easter tradition. This year, the Blessing of Food will be at St. Wendelin Church on Saturday, March 31, at 11:00 a.m. Saturday April 14, :00 PM - 8:30 PM In April we will once again celebrate the love we have for our Father at our Festival of Praise. This is a beautiful opportunity for us to offer praise to Jesus and receive His love as His beloved children. We know that Jesus is always there for us offering New Life, but sometimes we do lose focus. With the joy of Easter in our hearts, we remember that He is our salvation. Come and see what Jesus has in mind for all of us. Invite another family member or friend to join you and share in the love of His Holy Spirit. Father Jay Donahue, pastor of SS. Simon and Jude Parish in the South Hills of Pittsburgh will preside and offer an uplifting homily. This month s witness speaker will be our leadership team coordinator, Jim Zern. Jim will share with us his experience of awakening and new life. I know I struggle with it at times. Humility calls us to put our ego behind us. We must come to the realization that the world does not revolve around us. We must first be clear on this point. If most of us are not too wild about being humble, the saints make up for it with their enthusiasm. Saint Gregory of Sinai, a fifth-century monk in the Judean desert described two elements of humility. First we must put ones-self lower than others. Then we must credit God for all our achievements. The first, he said, is the beginning. The second is the consummation of a humble life. He added, Common to both attitudes is the idea that we are not the center of attention. Mystic Margaret Mary Alacoque affirmed this two-step process toward humility: Speak of God with praise, speak of others with respect. She then added a third step: And do not speak of yourself at all, either well or ill. Therein lays a true Lenten challenge! Jesus washed the feet of his disciples cheerfully. Our Lord humbled himself to die on the cross for a proud world that often is not even willing to bend its knee in response. Whose feet do we wash?
