5 By Stephanie Logue SAVE THE DATE!! September 9 Festival of Praise Once again, the Festival of Praise drew a joyful crowd that packed St. Albert s Church. Highlights of the evening were: Bishop Zubik as presider, Len Lis Confirmation, and Len with his sponsor and Holy Apostles co-worker, Jeff Jenney, as witness speakers. Bishop Zubik spoke of innocent, childlike faith that develops into an adult appreciation of our faith bringing us to a true relationship with Jesus. He said we must let the Holy Spirit set fire to our hearts and cherish the Lord Jesus. The apostles initially had childlike faith but, after they received the gift of the Spirit, they grew to their adult faith. Because of them, the Catholic Church exists today. Following the Bishop s homily, we witnessed the Confirmation of Len Lis as we all held lit candles that reflected the light of Christ. Len then told of how he was inspired by a man he met at a previous Festival of Praise. The man told Len that he had lacked religion, but was now planning to be baptized and confirmed. Len realized his own lack of religion and, at age 47, opened his heart to God. Jeff Jenney shared the painful story of his daughter who suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident. He was angry at God and stopped believing and going to church. After his son was hit by a car on Rt. 51 and suffered hand injuries, Jeff heard God telling him to do something positive. He and his wife worked intensively with their daughter and she eventually regained her ability to talk. God was talking to him he only had to open his heart. Jeff believes that God gives you what He thinks you need and the strength to deal with whatever life brings you. After Eucharistic Adoration and more beautiful music from our Praise Band, the evening concluded with refreshments in the Faith Formation Building. There are always a lot of first-time attendees there you could be one! It s a wonderful way to spend a Saturday evening. 6 THE DEACON S CORNER Deacons Corner Have you ever wondered why God asks you to do something for him? I guess, just maybe, there are many reasons why God shouldn t have called on you or me for anything. But God does not wait on us to be perfect to use us. There are many prophets and heroes whom God has used, all of whom had reason why it should not have been them. Abraham lied; Sarah laughed at God's promises; Moses stuttered; David's armor didn't fit; John Mark was rejected by Paul; Timothy had ulcers; Hosea's wife was a prostitute; Amos' only training was in the school of fig-tree pruning; Jacob was a liar; David had an affair; Solomon was too rich; Jesus was too poor; Abraham was to old; David was too young; Peter was afraid of death; John was self-righteous; Naomi was a widow; Paul was a murderer; so was Moses; Jonah ran from God; Miriam was a gossip; Gideon and Thomas both doubted; Jeremiah was depressed and suicidal; Elijah was burned out; John the Baptist was a loudmouth; Martha was a worry-wort; Mary may have been lazy; Samson had long hair; Noah got drunk; Did I mention Moses had a short fuse? So did Peter, Paul and lots of folks. So you see, you are in good company even though you might think you are not ready for God to use you. God does not hire and fire like most bosses because He is more like our Dad than a boss. He is not prejudiced or partial, or sassy and brash. He is not deaf to our cry or blind to our faults. By our baptism we are anointed prophet, priest, and king and His gifts to us are free. We can do wonderful things for others and still not be wonderful ourselves. Satan says, You are not worthy! Jesus says, So what? I AM. Satan looks back and sees our mistakes. God looks back and sees the Cross. Say yes to God s call. HOLY APOSTLES WOMEN S RETREAT Our Weekend or Saturday only Retreat at St. Paul s Retreat Center is approaching quickly. The dates are Friday, September 29 through Sunday, October 1st till noon. Wednesday, September 20, PM to 9 PM Saturday, September 23, AM to 1 PM This is Mandatory for all adult volunteers or employees of the diocese ( this includes anyone over the age of 18 ). There are only 50 openings for each session, you can contact the office and I will register you or on line at Diopitt.org. Safe Environment Reminder FBI Clearance and Waivers It is required by the diocese that all adult volunteers and staff have FBI clearances. All adult volunteers must have FBI clearances or if you have lived in the state of Pennsylvania for the past 10 years you may sign a wavier. (waviers will be available in the sacristies of each church site as well as the parish office. FLU SHOT SIGN UP Pre-Registration Sign up sheets will be available at our parish picnic, September 17. 7 FESTIVAL OF PRAISE Nar-Anon Meetings Continue Our local Nar-Anon meetings continue on Mondays, at 6:30 pm, in the St. Albert the Great chapel. This is at 3198 Schieck Street, in Baldwin (just off Glass Run Road). Addiction is a family disease. It affects the relationships of those close to the addict: parents, spouses, siblings, children, longtime friends, and employers. If someone s addiction is affecting you, first you must help yourself. Nar-Anon is a twelve step support group for families and friends of addicts. There are no dues or fees to join. Just come to a meeting. You will hear others, who are going through similar problems, talk about how they cope and find recovery. LADIES OF CHARITY MEETING In the coming weeks, a poster board for the Ladies of Charities will be on display in all four Churches for approximately two weeks. Dear Parish Family, Grace and peace to you in Christ! I promised a lady I met recently that I would walk with her in the fight ahead! Her name is Diane Ruchka and her son died last week from a drug overdose. Diane wants everyone to know about it because she wants people be aware of how destructive drugs are! With approximately 142 Americans dying of overdoses every day, that means that every three weeks, the death toll from drug overdoses is equal to that of September 11th (Paper by Shannon Meehan) This is outrageous! If you do not know anyone who has struggles with drug addiction, you will soon, if we do not do something! What is there to do? Often people say that the government should fix the problem, and I would like them to do more than they are, but the real issue is deeper than the government can handle. Every one of us is human and if we have any selfawareness we know that we are like St. Augustine who cried out to God, My heart is restless until it rests in you, oh Lord. Once we know that our hearts are restless because they are made for infinite love and goodness, then we can consciously place the yearning of our hearts on Jesus and find the peace we are looking for! He is the only thing that will satisfy your deepest longings! Jesus says, If you are thirsty, come and drink! Let us go to the Lord and place all our desires in Him? Only then will we be satisfied! Don t wait until you find satisfaction and joy through a robust prayer life and constant Christian living to share the Living Water, that is the Holy Spirit, with those in need! Let the world know that Jesus is the answer and can in fact satisfy every yearning of the human heart!! Love and prayers! Fr.
