5 The Catholic Community of South Pittsburgh Readings for the week of FEBRUARY 10, 2019 First Reading Isaiah is called to be a messenger for the Lord and responds, Send me! (Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8) Psalm In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord (Psalm 138). Second Reading Paul reminds us of the gospel he preached through which we are saved, if we believe it (1 Corinthians 15:1-11 [3-8, 11]). Gospel Jesus directs Simon to take his boat into deep water for a miraculous catch of fish. (Luke 5:1-11). AN ONGOING MISSION In his hometown synagogue, Jesus neighbors are amazed by his words. Nevertheless, they remind each other, Is this not Joseph s son? Surely the people know who he is. The carpenter s son. The young man who had learned in this very synagogue. The boy down the street. Conflict arises as Jesus begins to define himself in a new way. When he compares himself to the ancient prophets Elijah and Elisha the tensions grow. The tensions multiply when Jesus begins to tell of a new mission for God s people: the good news of the scriptures is intended for all. In his famous passage from the First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us of the eternal nature of love. Love does not come to an end. In today s readings, we are reminded that, like love, Jesus mission cannot be contained. Jesus slips through the crowd of persecutors and moves on to new challenges. We are called to this same perseverance in the name of love. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. ADDICTION RECOVERY MINISTRY will begin with an anointing Mass for those in recovery on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. at Saint Paul Cathedral. Bishop David Zubik will be the principal celebrant. All are welcome. READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Heb 11:32-40; Ps 31:20-24; Mk 5:1-20 Tuesday: Heb 12:1-4; Ps 22:26b-28, 30-32; Mk 5:21-43 Wednesday: Heb 12:4-7, 11-15; Ps 103:1-2, 13-14, 17-18a; Mk 6:1-6 Thursday: Heb 12:18-19, 21-24; Ps 48:2-4, 9-11; Mk 6:7-13 Friday: Heb 13:1-8; Ps 27:1, 3, 5, 8b-9; Mk Saturday: 6:14-29 Heb 13:15-17, 20-21; Ps 23:1-6; Mk 6:30-34 Sunday: Is 6:1-2a, 3-8; Ps 138:1-5, 7-8; 1 Cor 15:1-11 [3-8, 11]; Lk 5:1-11 FEAST OF ST. BLAIS E The Feast of St. Blais e is TODAY, Sunday, February 3, There will be a general blessing of the throats at all the Vigil and Sunday Masses. Faith, hope, and love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13 Page Five Isn t This The Son Of Joseph? In today s Gospel we find Jesus in the synagogue in Nazareth, his hometown. He proclaims that he is the anointed one of God and that he has come to renew the world in fulfillment of what the prophets foretold. The people are amazed by his words, but they also question him. They know him as the son of Joseph, the carpenter. To them he is a simple man from a simple family. While they are attracted by the words that he speaks they wonder how he could possibly do the amazing things that he speaks of. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to share his life and love with everyone we meet. Often times we feel called as missionaries to help those in need in other parts of our city, throughout our country and even halfway across the world! Yet, sometimes we can feel most challenged in proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel in our hometown or home parish. We wonder how we could possibly be effective witness of Jesus to the people who know our weaknesses and who have seen us at our less than best. Be confident! This is the exact witness that the world needs, that God calls us in our imperfection to set the world on fire with his love that is already burning in our hearts. As we continue our journey On Mission for The Church Alive! we are invited to be effective witnesses of the Gospel both near and far. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. ST. SYLVESTER MEN S RETREAT 2019 APRIL 12 APRIL 14 ST. PAUL OF THE CROSS RETREAT CENTER THEME: I HAVE CHOSEN YOU! Relax! Renew! 7 The Catholic Community of South Pittsburgh THE DEACON S CORNER This past week a couple of us were discussing Peter and some of his bonehead moves. He is one of my favorites, but he got it wrong so many times. We find Jesus was very patient with all his disciples. They were sometimes thickheaded, lazy, selfish, and slow to believe. Even from a merely human standpoint, we can see how frustrating they must have been. How much more irritating it would have been for God Incarnate to interact daily with these men. To say that it was uncomfortable for Jesus would probably be an understatement. With Jesus and his disciples, we find the perfect example of one of the Fruits of the Spirit, the virtue of Patience. He never complained no matter how painful it was at times. He remained humble and lowered himself to their level to achieve His mission of preparing them to spread His good news to the world when He returned to heaven. While the patience of Jesus is exceptional, the basic features of this virtue are the same wherever it appears. Patience involves such things as suffering, selfcontrol, humility, and generosity. They are all of themselves virtues. So, you might say that patience is a virtue because it is an exercise of several other virtues. As Christians, let us increase our patience by exercising our many spiritual disciplines: prayer, study, reading God s word (meditate on the scriptures), and of course the Sacraments. Patience can be very difficult but practicing this virtue will prove to be very fulfilling in our Christian walk of life. ~Deacon Mike In Christ, We Are One, We Are Sent HOLY ANGELS CHRISTIAN MOTH- ERS & WOMEN S GUILD ST. PATRICKS DAY CARD PARTY Reservations are now being accepted for the St. Patrick s Day Card Party on Sunday, March 17th from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the church hall. Page Seven STICKS AND STONES is a Canadian TV movie that is based upon the true story of a Massachusetts Junior Hockey team that traveled to a tournament in Montreal during the early days of the Iraq War. Upon arrival in Montreal, they encountered anti- American protests, some of them violent, on several occasions. Fed up, the American team decided to return home. Before they did, one of the Junior players from Canada tried to apologize for the poor treatment that they received, but the American kids, their coaches and their families were in no mood to accept his apology. The Canadian kid did not give up, and despite receiving no help originally from his team, his community and even the American team, he persisted and organized a Friendship tournament to show the American team that not all Canadians are bad or anti-american. Along the way, the Canadian boy learned about the brother of one of the US players that gave up his own budding hockey career to serve in the military. Regardless of your feelings on the Iraq War, this movie will inspire you with its message. While not a religious movie, its message is peace and going out of your way to right a wrong. As mentioned, this movie is based upon a true story. I gladly give this movie Five Beards out of Five Beards because its message is timeless and the way that it is told via this movie is very fitting in our lives today. This DVD is available for purchase on several of the popular online shopping sites. ~Deacon Tim Live Jesus in our hearts...forever!
