4 Page Four January 13, 2019 In the gospel for today, Jesus hears that he is God s beloved son with whom God is well pleased before his ministry begins. Because Jesus is aware of his identity, being loved by God and pleasing to God, he is able to go out and do what God asks him to do. I often times think that if we were not so hard on ourselves, trying to live up to the unnecessary expectations that family, friends and the media place on us and instead just be aware of just how much God loves us for who He created us to be, we could do so much more in our own unique and individual way, whether great or small. The only person we really need to please in this life is the Lord. Now that Christmas is coming to a close and we are beginning a new year, I have come to realize how fast the time seems to be passing. It seems even more so now that I turned the corner and celebrated my 50th birthday. I was reminded by my buddy Fr. Tom Burke, I could now be eligible for special senior citizen discounts by becoming a member of AARP! Ouch! When did this happen? Have I really been so busy that the years have all gone by so quickly? In my prayer, I asked the Lord why he didn't try to stop me from wasting so much time with nonsense. My eyes welled up as I reflected on the days of yesterday, for what could have been, for what should have been, what would have been if only I would have! I quickly came to realize that nothing had been wasted and that every experience good or bad has been an opportunity to learn and grow in wisdom. God has always been there for me, calling me, nudging me, guiding me along the way. I may not have always been willing and able to let go but he never gave up. I am reminded of a passage from The letter of James where he writes, Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers: all Celebrations of Life s Journey good giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no alteration or shadow caused by change. James 1:17 It can be so easy to be deceived by the thought of youthfulness believing that I had all the answers and could do anything and solve anything on my own, quick to anger and slow to forgive. The older I get, the more I realize that the answers come from God if I pay attention and give him the time to speak. I am learning that growing older isn t about mourning the past and thinking about winding down the journey of life, but rather being excited about the journey that lies ahead. I look forward to embarking on a journey of new beginnings full of hope, laughter and love. I look forward to growing in wisdom, age and grace learning from all of you and with you, just how much God loves us because we are his sons and daughters. I have come to realize that there are no guarantees in life but that every minute of life is an honored gift from God and each moment must be treasured until we are called home to be with Him. Thank You to everyone who sent me well wishes, cards and gifts for my 50th birthday. Thank You especially for the love, prayers and support you have shown me in so many ways. Thank You for all the ways in which you walk with me on this journey of life as a priest. I know the journey can be difficult at times but when we walk together, loving and supporting one another, not forcing each other down a certain path but walking together following the Lord. I know we can make it if we simply, Let Go and Let God be our guide. You are not on a journey TO God. You are on a journey WITH God. ~ Steve Maraboli Fr Steve Together we welcome: Lucia Renee Stout Who was baptized into our Faith & Family. Congratulations to the Parents & Godparents! 5 The Catholic Community of South Pittsburgh Readings for the week of JANUARY 20, 2019 First Reading As a bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so God rejoices in the chosen ones (Isaiah 62:1-5). Psalm Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations (Psalm 96). Second Reading All the varied gifts in the Christian community are from one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4-11). Gospel Rejoicing at a wedding celebration in Cana, Jesus replenishes the wine supply (John 2:1-11). CALLED TO SERVE For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as one mightier than I. But he did as Jesus asked, and the Holy Spirit descended and heaven s voice spoke to Jesus, You are my beloved Son. Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. Peter was called, and you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God s word. He saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. Titus 3:5 Monday: Heb 1:1-6; Ps 97:1, 2b, 6, 7c, 9; Mk 1:14-20 Tuesday: Heb 2:5-12; Ps 8:2ab, 5, 6-9; Mk 1:21-28 Wednesday: Heb 2:14-18; Ps 105:1-4, 6-9; Mk 1:29-39 Thursday: Heb 3:7-14; Ps 95:6-11; Mk 1:40-45 Friday: Heb 4:1-5, 11; Ps 78:3, 4bc, 6c-8; Mk 2:1-12 Saturday: Heb 4:12-16; Ps 19:8-10, 15; Mk 2:13-17 Sunday: Is 62:1-5; Ps 96:1-3, 7-10; 1 Cor 12:4-11; Jn 2:1-11 Page Five You Are My Beloved Son, With You I Am Well Pleased As Jesus was being baptized by John in the Jordan River we are told of amazing things happening. First, the heavens were opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus in the form of a dove. Then, the voice of God the Father from heaven thundered, saying, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. Jesus did not need to be baptized for the same reason we do. As the Son of God, he was without sin. Yet, to be baptized is to be anointed to fulfill the mission of God the Father in the world. By being baptized in the Jordan, Jesus set an example for us to follow. Through baptism we are freed from original sin, sanctified by the Holy Spirit to share in the life of God through the Sacraments and in the Church, and anointed to fulfill the mission of faith, hope, and love that God the Father has chosen for us. While the Holy Spirit does not descend like a dove he is present in and through the baptized from the moment of baptism. And while the walls of the church do not shake with the thundering voice of the Father, the halls of heaven ring with joy as every new beloved son and daughter of God is welcomed into the life of faith through baptism. Our baptism was not simply a ritual, but a life-changing event that is in effect throughout our lives. How can the grace of baptism continue to be at work for the good of our parishes and communities? Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. ST. 7 The Catholic Community of South Pittsburgh THE DEACON S CORNER Today I would like to take a step back. A couple weeks ago we celebrated the Holy Family. It reminded me that in Baptism preparation we remind parents that they are the first and hopefully the best teachers of their children, and that includes in ways of Christ. On Holy Family Sunday we heard words similar to those in Ephesians 6:4: fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. If our home is one where anger, condemnation, sarcasm, intimidation, and fear rule, our kids will be turned off to God and turned on to wrath. The same traits that we see in our lives, will soon be seen in theirs. But if our home is one where there is peace, encouragement, patience, joy and love, children learn of the Lord naturally because they see God s characteristics lived out in front of them. Then a spiritual foundation can be established for children to grow in their knowledge and understanding of the Lord. The apostle Paul wrote of Timothy: from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. (2 Tim. 2:15). May the same be true of our Children. ~Deacon Mike In Christ: We Are One, We Are Sent MARCH FOR LIFE~BUS TRIP Deacon Tim is organizing a bus trip for the 2019 March for Life, which will take place on Friday, January 18th in Washington, DC. If you are interested in more information on this bus trip, contact Deacon Tim at deacontim@verizon.net. Since the 1973 Supreme Court cases, Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, which legalized abortion-on-demand in our country, over 60 million lives have been lost to abortion. Ending abortion and promoting a culture of life is why we march each year. Deacon Tim is trying to determine which size bus to reserve for our group. If you are interested in joining us, please contact him. If you cannot join us, please pray for our safety on the trip and for the end to abortion. "Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer Page Seven This week's book review is "Fasting" by Fr. Slavko Barbaric, O.F.M.. Fr Slavko is famous for many things, not the least of which is putting himself ceaselessly at the service of Medjugorje pilgrims. He actually died at Medjugorje while descending from Cross Mountain with a group of pilgrims, just after he finished leading them in the Way of the Cross. Fasting is an excellent book on a very important subject. Many important people fasted in the Bible. Moses fasted, St Paul fasted and most importantly, Jesus fasted. In Mark 9:29, Jesus told his disciples why they were unable to deliver a man from demonic possession and told them that certain demons cannot be expelled, except by prayer and fasting. The word fasting comes from the Hebrew word meaning to cover or shut one's mouth, and from the Greek word meaning not to eat. The early Christian Church fasted on Wednesdays and Fridays. The Church is now less strict on fasting, but this book may give you the inspiration to honor God with your own personal fast. As this book tells us, "fasting is a call for conversion directed to our body. Fasting will lead us to a new freedom of heart and mind. It is the process by which we become free and independent from all material things." I proudly give this book Five Beards out of Five Beards because is shows us how and why to bring the Grace of fasting to our own lives. Live Jesus in our hearts... Forever! ~Deacon Tim ST.
