4 Congratulations to David and Deneen Skalniak! Last Sunday two members of our parish family received the Manifesting the Kingdom Award at St. Paul Cathedral in Oakland, from Bishop David Zubik. I share with you a page from the Mass program that explains the award. Manifesting the Kingdom Award. Our lives as Catholic Christians are about manifesting Christ. In God s plan it is revealed that each of us is an adopted child of God with the power now, through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, to work with Christ in bringing about a world of peace, kindness, truth and love. This Saint Paul calls the new creation. The Gospel speaks of manifesting and expressing the kingdom of God. Saint Paul in his letter to the Ephesians tells us how God chose us in Christ to be holy and blameless in his sight, to be full of love (Eph. 1:4). We have received a great revelation. :It is no less than this: in Christ Jesus the Gentiles are now co-heirs with the Jews, members of the same body and sharers of the promise through the preaching of the Gospel (Eph. 3: 5-6). The Church of Pittsburgh rejoices in so many good and exemplary Priests, Deacons, consecrated women and men, and faithful laywomen and laymen. Each one in his or her own way works to manifest the new life we have received in baptism. Through all of this effort the kingdom of God is made manifest in our midst as God s grace and love unfolds and embraces us. Smokey invites all parish pets to join him for a special blessing to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis, patron saint of animals. Wednesday, October 4th at 6:30 PM on the grounds of the parish office at St. Albert the Great. St. Francis is known for founding the Catholic Church s Franciscan order. He lived in Italy during the late 12th and 13th centuries. He is remembered for his great love and compassion for animals and nature. Join us as we give thanks and praise to the Lord for our pets. Celebrations of Life s Journey The Manifesting the Kingdom award is given by the Diocesan Bishop to laywomen and laymen and to consecrated women and men who demonstrate the presence of Jesus in their lives and have participated in an exceptional service to the Church reflected in so many different ways in the lives, ministry and work of those who receive it. The Diocese of Pittsburgh salutes these awardees, who work alongside their priests in the myriad tasks of the kingdom. Each pastor nominates candidates for the award as do the major superiors of religious communities. In addition, a number of women and men are nominated by diocesan staff for exceptional service to the diocese. From these have come the names of those who receive the Manifesting the Kingdom Award. Dave and Deneen serve the parish in number of ways. Dave is part of the Festival of Praise, (you will see Dave setting up and singing in the band). Deneen serves in the Ladies of Charity and the many projects they do, the Senior Outreach group, they both volunteer for both parish fish fries, the parish festival, the Trunk-or-Treat, the parish picnic. and many others. I also salute them and am grateful for their tireless dedication to our parish and the many ways they help me as the pastor. Fr. Steve Together we welcome Mireya Jordyn Schuitz and Josephine Grace Capaccio all children who were baptized into our faith & Family Congratulations to the Parents & Godparents If you need to prepare for the baptism of your infant, and you have not had the preparation seminar, please contact Deacon Mike at (412) , extension 206 to schedule a time. We will work to schedule a time that is convenient for both mom and dad to attend. Sponsors are also welcome. If you already have had the training, just call Deacon Mike and he will get you on the schedule for your newest arrival. Please remember members of our parishes who are in nursing homes, the homebound, the sick and their caregivers in your prayers. May God s mercy shine on them. Our sympathy is extended to the families of: John Malie, Ethel Mihalik, Elizabeth Naughton and Elizabeth Gasior Grant to Them O Lord, And Let Perpetual Light shine on Them.
5 Carrick Community Corn Fest By Stephanie Logue For this week s column, I decided to venture into a community event rather than a strictly church event because unity comes in many ways. On Saturday, August 25, the Carrick Community Council held its Corn Fest at Phillips Park. The Corn Fest has been an annual event for nearly 40 years for the Carrick/ Overbrook residents. A day of fun for families, it included face painting and other activities for the kids, musical entertainment, booths representing schools, churches, and community businesses, craft booths, fire and police departments, and wellness screenings. Food consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs, hot sausage, barbequed chicken, and ethnic foods. And, of course, it wouldn t be a corn fest without corn on the cob! Even though the Corn Fest is a community event, a number of Holy Apostles parishioners who are residents of Carrick and Overbrook have been involved for many years. Mike Woshner and Al Walker manned a table with information on Holy Apostles Parish and events, such as the Festival of Praise, the Men s Prayer and Fellowship Group, Retreat Center, church bulletins, parish information, and prayer booklets suitable for all denominations. They also treated the children to small bags of M&Ms. A great day for residents to show pride in their community. SAVE THE DATE!! 7 THE DEACON S CORNER Deacon s Corner If you are reading this, another prediction of the end of the world has come and gone, without very much excitement. Some fellow interpreted the Bible such that he believes it calls for the end of the world to come today, 23 Sept I believe he is a little off base, or at least a little off. The one good thing that comes from these predictions is that it reminds us that this broken world isn t intended to be forever. God has better plans in store for us, in time. Every time that one of these predictions occur, my thoughts often go to St. Michael the Archangel. In the icons of the orthodox church he is often pictured with the stoles of a deacon. I think that because he serves at the altar of God in heaven, as we earthly deacons do, here on earth. But Catholic tradition tells us St. Michael has four duties: (1) To continue to wage battle against Satan and the other fallen angels; (2) to save the souls of the faithful from the power of Satan, especially at the hour of death; (3) to protect the People of God, both the Jews of the Old Covenant, and the Christians of the New Covenant (us); and (4) finally to lead the souls of the departed from this life and present them to our Lord for the particular judgement, and at the end of time, for the final judgment. With all the threats and violence in the world today, it would be very appropriate to ask God to allow St. Michael to stand up for our nation, and for our Church in our world, and to respond to the sins of abortion, euthanasia, terrorism, genocide, and the like. And last but not least correct all the divisiveness and disagreement in our government today. By the way, if that prediction happens to come true before the end of the day See you in Heaven. Deacon Mike In Christ: We Are One, We Are Sent BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN Beginning this Sunday, October 1st, and continuing thru Sunday, October 29th, the Ladies of Charity will have baby bottles available for the Pregnancy Resource Center/Genesis. 8 Complete Joy As we read in his letter to the Philippians today, Saint Paul shares that his joy is complete when they are united in heart. It is a discouragement against envy and competition and an encouragement for humility and service. To be united in heart and one as the Body of Christ is always our mission as the Church. This task becomes even more essential as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! There is no doubt the Church will be made stronger as we unite our human, pastoral, spiritual and financial resources and form vibrant parishes throughout the diocese. The challenge is to place our focus not on ourselves, but on our neighbors and our new communities that they may be alive in faith and in the love of God. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. 52nd Annual Chimbote Mission Dinner The annual Pittsburgh Diocese fundraising dinner for the mission in Chimbote, Peru will be held October 12, 2017 at the Sheraton Station Square. With our diocesan support since the 1960s, the Center for Social Works has become a multi-service health and education facility consisting of a maternity hospital, an outpatient clinic, a clinical laboratory, and an orphanage. The doctors and staff treat an average of 17,000 patients and deliver 300 babies every month, offering compassionate care in a faith-filled Catholic environment. Your prayers and support go a long way toward strengthening and sustaining this vital mission in Chimbote. For more information on the dinner or to make a donation, call or go to.chimbote@diopitt.org. SACRAMENT STUDY You are invited to a series of discussions on the 7 Sacraments. We will cover them in 5 sessions on Wednesdays after the 9 AM Mass at St. Albert s. If there is enough interest, each session will be repeated at 7:30 PM that evening. The dates are: October 11, October 18, October 25, and November 8 and November 15. Marty Murawski will facilitate. I hope you will join us for all or some of the sessions. Please call so we will know how many people to expect. St. Elizabeth Elementary School will hold a Preschool story hour open to the public Thurs. Oct 12 from 1-2PM. Children that are 3 yrs or older (and potty trained) are welcome to attend. We will have a story followed by some activities with some Middle school students. We hope you are able to join us. Children can be dropped off after signing in with one of the Preschool teachers or Middle School students, Parents can stay, but not necessary. We look forward to seeing you. If you have questions me at siydon@st-elizabeth.org R.C.I.A The Rite of Christian Initiation Have you considered becoming a member of the Catholic faith? Or maybe you know someone who has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic, a disciple of Christ? If you feel drawn to the church and would like to attend, contact Deacon Mike at X 206, or by way of at mbabcock@holyapostlesparish.org. YOU CAN HELP! Our parish is dedicated to remaining in the lives of parishioners who may no longer be able to make it to church.
