4 This coming Monday, we welcome Bishop Zubik back to Holy Apostles Parish for the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation. The sacrament will be celebrated at St. Albert the Great Church at 7:00 PM. This year we have 55 young men and women receiving the sacrament and one adult. Through the Sacrament of Confirmation Catholics receive an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Through Confirmation, the Holy Spirit gives them the strengthened ability to practice their Catholic faith in every part of their lives and to witness Christ in everywhere and at all times. As our parish family prepares to celebrate this sacrament with our youth, think about your own confirmation and how you allow it to play an important part in your life. Now would be a good time to reaffirm our own commitment to the Holy Spirit. Now would be a good time to reflect on our own lives and think about how we are using these gifts of the Holy Spirit given to us at confirmation. Are we using them in every aspect of our lives and do we give them a chance to strengthen our relationship with God? Next Sunday begins Holy Week. It starts with Palm Sunday so if you are able to, consider wearing something red to Mass. Again, I invite and encourage you to join us at our churches to Experience the wonderful celebration and experience of Holy Week. There are so many sights, sounds, and smells that are a part of what is the holiest week of the year. Consider cutting our the invitation found in the bulletin and personally invite a family member, neighbor, friend or co-worker to join you this Holy Week. We begin the Easter Triduum on Holy Thursday with the Mass of the Lord s Supper and it includes, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday. The Great Easter Vigil is the high point of the Triduum. The word Triduum comes from the Latin word meaning "three days." The Triduum celebrates the core of our faith, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Thus, the Triduum commemorates the Institution of the Eucharist, the passion, crucifixion, death of the Lord, his descent to the dead, and finally his glorious resurrection on Easter Sunday morning. 5 HOLY APOSTLES LADIES OF CHARITY LENTEN NAIL PROJECT This Lent, the Holy Apostles Ladies of Charity is sponsoring a weekly collection drive at all weekend Masses at all Churches on behalf of social service agencies which serve those needs in our local area. If we read this out of context it could easily be taken the wrong way. One way that this was distorted by many Catholics in the past was basically to say that we simply need to forsake what is fun, good, and interesting and just suffer in this life so that we can have abundance of joy and reward in the next. That is not what Jesus did and it is not what He calls us to! Jesus did not just put his head down, grit his teeth and bear it his whole life. Jesus was a man of tremendous joy who loved to serve people, enjoyed being around others, and thrived on teaching them the truth. He had friends and went to banquets and genuinely enjoyed his life. That being said, His joy came from His intimate union with His Father and Father s will. Just doing what the Father desired was literally what Jesus lived for. As Jesus followed the Father s perfect will every day, He continuously died to His own desires and weakness, and did as the Father directed. When the Father s perfect will led Jesus to His suffering and Passion, He chose to love the Father s will above His own life. This is the meaning of the passage above! Jesus is saying, eternal life is found within the perfect will of God! If we live it now and die to our selfishness, then we will know love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and all the fruits of the Holy Spirit. If we are too busy for God, then we are too busy for love and joy in this life and the next, and that means we have our priorities backwards. The first thing we can do is serve the Lord in all the ordinary things that we already do in life. In the morning let s ask God how we can serve him and then throughout the day, pay attention to the promptings of His Spirit. We could also try 5 minutes of silence a day, making a morning offering, coming to daily Mass, reading the Psalms, singing our favorite praise songs to God, night prayer, listen of K- Love, listen to 106.7, Practice the Examine Prayer, Give Alms, fasting and the list goes on! 6 EAGLE SCOUT By Deacon Tim For Greater Glory" is a 2012 film that was based on the events of the Cristero War in Mexico. Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria, Ruben Blades and Peter O'Toole star in this historical war drama. The film is about the aftermath of the anti-catholic provisions of the 1917 Constitution of Mexico. Mexico's newly elected president says "religion is a plot to poison the minds of our people, to turn them into religious fanatics... this evil will not be tolerated" and he begins a violent campaign against the Catholic Church in Mexico and its faithful followers. for Churches are set on fire, priests are murdered and their bodies are hung on telegraph poles as a warning to others. A kind, older priest befriends a young boy, Jose Sanchez del Rio, in his parish and teaches him how to be an altar boy. The priest is murdered by the Mexican army, and Jose witnessed this terrible act. Jose eventually joins the Cristeros (Soldiers for Christ) and becomes the protege of its reluctant leader, atheist General Enrique Gorostieta, played by Andy Garcia. General Enrique unites the rag tag Cristeros and wins a few key battles against the Mexican army. Young Jose is captured and tortured for his Catholic Faith. In a moving scene, Jose is given one final chance, in front of his parents, to renounce Christ or die. Jose bravely says "Viva Cristo Rey" (Long Iive Christ the King) and is killed for his faith. General Enrique arrives too late to save his young friend, and soon afterwards converts to the Catholic Faith. in 2005, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Jose, along with 12 other martrys of this religious persecution, and Pope Francis canonized Jose in I proudly give "For Greater Glory" 4 Beards out of 5 Beards. This movie tells of an under-reported event in North American history and also serves as a warning to modern America to be vigilant against religious persecution, especially anti-catholicism. This film does contain some violence, but so does Star Wars... I am sure that most everyone will enjoy this movie. Hopefully, it will also cause some to look up and learn about the events of the Cristero War. Live Jesus in our hearts.. 7 March Festival of Praise On Saturday evening, March 10, St. Albert the Great church was once again filled with people praising our Lord. It seems each month there is a blend of regulars and new faces. My husband and I sat next to a couple from St. Sylvester s parish who were first-time attendees. Hopefully, they will become regulars. The evening began with welcome and prayer led by Eddie Wamala, who reminded us that when we open our hearts to God, He comes. He encouraged us to not merely sing the words to the songs, but to sing them from our hearts. Our witness speaker was Sister Mary Gianna, DLJC, who grew up without knowing God. At age 16, she was a sophomore at Columbine High School. Her normal routine was to study at the library, but on April 20, 1999, she had an overwhelming urge to leave the school. While driving away, she looked in her rear view mirror and saw hundreds of students running out of the school. She soon learned about the shooting that claimed multiple students lives. That shooting was centered in the very library where she would have been studying. Someone told her that God must have had a plan for her life. In her senior year, a friend invited her to go to church where she met a youth minister who introduced her to God. She said God led her out of Columbine and led her to Him. She became a Catholic and soon will take her final vows as a nun. She said that God has great plans for us we just have to say yes. The evening s presider was Father Dan Waruszewski, parochial vicar at Immaculate Conception Parish in Washington, PA. He began his homily with John 3:16, For God so loved the world that gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. He said that we try to earn our way to heaven by things such as rosaries, Masses, novenas, etc., but we can t do it on our own we need Jesus. Jesus gave Himself to us to break the chain of sin and death. We just have to accept His gift of salvation by opening the door to our heart and allowing Him to enter. Fr. Dan said that we must use our gifts and talents to build up God s kingdom on earth. He spoke briefly about the upcoming Church Alive announcement at the end of April and said that we need to remember our faith is in Christ, not in a church building, a mass time, or a clergy member. After Eucharistic adoration, the evening ending with a rousing version of the song Warrior. Saturday April 14, :00 PM - 8:30 PM In April we will once again celebrate the love we have for our Father at our Festival of Praise. This is a beautiful opportunity for us to offer praise to Jesus and receive His love as His beloved children. We know that Jesus is always there for us offering New Life, but sometimes we do lose focus. With the joy of Easter in our hearts, we remember that He is our salvation. Come and see what Jesus has in mind for all of us. Invite another family member or friend to join you and share in the love of His Holy Spirit. 8 THE DEACON S CORNER Deacon s Corner We have renewed our Nar-Anon meetings and they are every Monday. We hope to continue to grow our family and provide support for those who are dealing daily with the insanity of addiction; those who are friends or family members of an addict. As we have stated, these meetings are to provide input to those who are suffering and wish to learn through the experiences live by others. Remember we maintain anonymity. Speak if you want or just listen, but please come. Yes, there are many ways that Jesus shows himself to us in the Eucharist and the other sacraments, in the hearts of those who love and serve in his name but to meet him in heaven is what we desire most. Each day, not just during Lent, we should seek to follow the path that leads to him by living virtuous lives and drawing near to God in prayer. Yet, we know that we can t do this alone. In fact, it is the Church that Christ himself established that is to be our support on this journey through life to the glory of heaven. As the Church of Pittsburgh is On Mission for The Church Alive! we pray that this initiative will result in a stronger, more vibrant Church. And while we may wonder if that will mean a difference in our lives, we should be assured that it will! A stronger local Church means that we will be better supported on our journey with Jesus to eternal life. Whether it s inspiring celebrations of the sacraments or ministries that provide for the spiritual and temporal needs of all, a stronger Church will allow us to see Jesus more clearly in our midst and will give us greater hope as we prepare to see him in heaven. What have I done to deserve this? In many cases there are no answers to why bad things happen. The question should really be: When bad things happen, what can I do? You can choose to withdraw from life, wallow in anger, and never move on. Or you can turn your pain over to Jesus and welcome a new experience into your life. There is a story of a single father with two teenage children. He was diagnosed with stage 2 lymphoma. He worked full time and received chemotherapy every couple weeks. He was asked how he got through each day with cancer. Smiling he said, Every day is a miracle for me. I refuse to let anything, or anyone ruin it, especially by being bitter or angry. I live for my kids and for today. Believe it or not, I am happier now than I was before I was diagnosed. Bad things, painful and unfair circumstances, will happen. It is okay to ask, Why? But don t hang on to that question in despair. Let it go, like that single father did. If you know anyone going through a rough time, call, write, or sit with them. Be that Spirit filled catalyst to help them move forward and be the best medicine you can be for them.
