5 Gifts for a King As the wise men followed the star they were convinced that it would lead them to something amazing, a great king who had come into the world. They certainly could have been caught off guard when they gazed upon the sight where the star led them. Instead of a powerful ruler they were looking at a newborn baby surrounded by his mother and foster father. Yet, they didn t hesitate to lay their precious gifts before the Lord and do him homage. And after honoring the newborn king, they went in haste to return to their homeland, sharing the good news of the coming of the Messiah as they travelled along. The witness of the wise men is one we are invited to follow as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! We all are being asked to come before the Lord with the gifts we have to offer. These gifts aren t gold, frankincense and myrrh, but the gifts of our hearts and lives that we are able to share with God, the Church and others and enrich our parishes. Even more, as we journey from our faith communities through our family, work and social relationships we also look for opportunities to share the good news of Godwith-us with all we meet. Gilmary Council Grand Knight Bernard Komoroski ) Dear Children of God, When I was in 5 th grade at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic School in Hermon PA, my teacher used to refer to Jesus as the God-man. I had never heard Jesus referred to this way, so I asked my parents, why is she calling Jesus the God-man. Eventually I realized that she was trying to get us to recognize one of the most foundational mysteries of the Christian Faith. Jesus is 100% God and 100% man! This mystery is impossible to fully comprehend given that people and things can only be 100% of anything. This is why the church calls it a mystery! Not only does 200% not seem to be possible, but it is also beyond imagining how God could become one with us! God, who is Love and Perfection itself, has humbled himself to share in our weak and broken human nature. The best part of the story is that God not only shares our human nature with us, but He also shares his Divine Nature with us! This is the good news of our Christian faith! This sharing of the Divine Nature of God with humanity is our healing, help, and Salvation; Emmanuel! I used to ask Jesus, what do you have to do with my day to day life? Now I see that if we simply walk with Jesus, He has everything to do with our daily lives. So, what do I mean by walk with Jesus. In the morning, we can wake up and say, God, I am kind of a big deal and I have a lot to do. If you could do this and that for me that would be great, Amen! While this is not the worst thing to say, a far better prayer would be, Good morning God! I know you are a big deal and have a lot to do, so how is it that I can serve you? Then wherever you go throughout the day and whatever you do, look for how God is working in the people and circumstances around you and ask him how you can help. If you do this for a month, you will find out that God does not just act in our lives sometimes, but that He is constantly active and we only need to be attentive so see and participate in His amazing work! This gets really awesome because we can begin to see and become a part of not only the human works of Christ, but also His Divine activity! Try this 30day challenge, and you will never be the same! 6 Where am I going? I often think the journey of the three kings is like my own journey in this life. I wander around through life, often mistaking one sign for another. My feet seem to keep moving even when I have no idea where I am headed or in what direction I should be traveling. I feel lost much of the time and then suddenly an something happens, an awareness happens at the oddest of times through the oddest circumstance or situation. Imagine the faith the Magi had in following that star, a sign from God, as they traveled such distances unaware of what may lie ahead on their journey. What grabs my attention in today s gospel is that after their journey, the recognize Jesus and acknowledging their awareness of who he is for this world, they set about returning the favor. They shared their treasures with this family. As we journey through life, are our eyes fixed on that star, that goal that is the kingdom of heaven? Do we have the faith to keep moving forward with faith and trust unaware of what we may encounter along the way? When we experience our own epiphanies along our journey of life, those moments when the light bulb in our head suddenly goes on and we recognize God s grace and the blessings that come from that grace, do we then share the treasures that result from those blessings with others? Do we see Jesus in the faces of the hungry, and the bodies of the sick? Does our journey take us to awareness that Jesus is present everywhere we turn, everywhere we look, and everywhere we go? Do we respond today to that awareness with the same measure of gratitude the magi did so many years ago? Grace is God s eternal gift awakening you from what never was to what has always been. Receive what has always been yours to have. Author unknown In times past, there was a tradition of having your house blessed every year at the feast of Epiphany. The priest or deacon would come by and write with chalk over the main entry door of the house, what looked like the following: 20+C+M+B+18. The 20 is the first two numbers of the current year, the C+M+B stand for the three wise men, Casper, Melchoir and Balthazar, and the 18 is for the last two numbers of the current year. It has become more difficult for clergy to make so many visits to bless homes however, the tradition can still be carried out by you and your family who gather to pray and write with chalk over the door of you home, asking the Lord to bless your home. Every Year on this weekend, I offer the prayers and the blessings for all of you and your homes. The following is a prayer to use: O Lord, May all who come to our home this year find an open door to Your Presence and Peace. May they rejoice to find Christ living among us. May we seek and serve, in everyone we meet, that same Jesus who is Lord, forever and ever. 7 TTWWADI Figure it out yet? That s The Way We ve Always Done It is a phrase that probably makes bosses, administrators, church leaders, (and sometimes families) crazy. When a new boss takes over a department or a company, he knows how he wants to run it. His employees must be able to put aside the old ways and adapt to the new boss vision. Being resistant could result in the loss of their jobs. Some of you might remember the story that my boss told at our first staff meeting. It was about the new bride whose husband questioned why she cut the edges off the roast before cooking it. She said it was the way her mother always did it. When the husband asked his mother-in -law, she said she didn t know why, but that was what HER mother had always done. Finally, they spoke to the grandmother who said that the reason she did it was because she didn t have a pan large enough to fit the roast. My boss was trying to emphasize that just because that s the way we ve always done it doesn t mean it s still necessary or practical. Our daughter has dealt with this during the holidays. Her inlaws wanted to maintain the Christmas day customs they always had breakfast at Dad and stepmom s house, lunch at an aunt s house, and dinner at Mom s. Now that we have our granddaughter, we also wanted to see her on Christmas day. My daughter kept hearing but that s the way we ve always done it, and it made me cringe. Family dynamics had changed and it called for creating new traditions. So this year all the grandparents were invited to my daughter s house for Christmas breakfast and got to see our granddaughter discover her gifts under the tree. Everyone had a good time and it looks like we ve started that new tradition. A prime example of being open to change and new traditions is with the church s On Mission project. Holy Apostles Parish has already been through many changes some people embraced them, some just accepted them, and others resisted them. That s the way we ve always done it doesn t work when you have multiple churches merging into one parish. Each church wants to keep its own practices, but it s just not reasonable. This spring, we will see two new churches added to our mix. There wouldn t be much unity if each church continued to do its own thing. We have been blessed with a great leader in Fr. Steve who brought us through the Holy Apostles merger and has made us a vibrant new parish. Just think about the new traditions that our combined parish has Trunk or Treat, Elderly Outreach, Potluck Dinner, Health Ministry, Father s Day Breakfast, Columbus Day Italian Buffet, Parish Picnic, Festivals of Praise, and so many more. Honestly, I don t want to go back to the way we ve always done it. The new way is SO much better! STRENGTH from HEAVEN Saturday January 13, :00 PM - 8:30 PM We are pleased to have Father Mike Ackerman join us again to preside over the January Festival of Praise service. Brian Hartle will share witness to the love and support Jesus is always willing to provide. The Festival of Praise team and Praise Band, lead by Father Levi Hartle, has put together a service that has attracted many people from throughout the area and the entire dioceses. Join us in worship and become a part of this joyful experience. The service is truly a motivational evening with an inspirational homily, witness talk, songs of praise and worship, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and ending with Eucharistic procession and Benediction. Since 2001 volunteers from our parish have been traveling to Louisa, Kentucky - the heart of Appalachia. Our work is to continue the legacy of Fr. Ralph Beiting who worked tirelessly for the people of Appalachia for over 60 years. Our trip will be July 15-21, We will be teaching vacation bible school, completing home repairs and visiting with the local people. We are limited in our numbers, so it is very important that you contact me as soon as possible if you are interested ( ). All volunteers are asked to pay $75 to the mission center for use of the facilities and help with fund raising for the other expenses. God Bless! Engage with people more than pixels Texting is easier than talking. It gives you intimacy without risk. This year, resolve to spend more time looking into someone s eyes when you talk to them. Take time for a cup of coffee together. 2. Take your soul seriously We often ignore what we watch or say as if it has no effects on us. But the constant hatred and dehumanization in our media has consequences on our character. Life is a continuous journey of soul shaping. This year turn away from the rants and raves on the media. You only get one soul; don t squander it. 3. Increase your kindness If you wish to feel kind, do something good. Rather than joy leading you to smile, your smile can lead you to joy. It can be something small or large; It can be a charitable donation or a gentle word or help with a heavy bag. Just do it. 4. Choose someone to forgive Some people are very hard to forgive but you need not begin with the toughest cases. Small acts of grace will grow. Choose a place to begin. The more you forgive, the less the world can injure you; forgiveness is a soft shield for your soul. 5. In forgiving, include yourself Allow yourself the chance of making mistakes, without punishing yourself. God is the perfect one, not human beings. Will you succeed every time in all your efforts; of course not. But in all you attempt look of one thing, spiritual growth.
