The responsibility assumed by the couple and the Church is significant. While many focus on the day of the wedding, we seek to prepare for the second day and beyond. The Bishops of NJ have adopted a policy to assist in this preparation. Attendance at Engaged Encounter, Pre-Cana, or another approved marriage prep program, and individual sessions with a priest or deacon are required of all couples. Couples should contact the Rectory one year in advance of the intended marriage, and before finalizing other detail particularly reception facilities. Baptisms: The Church shares the joy of families in the birth of children, and, with their parents takes seriously the responsibility of bringing them up in the faith. Parents seeking baptism for their children are to attend Baptismal Prep Class. This can be arranged by calling the parish office. Parents should be registered members of the parish. Godparents, those who represent the church in the life of the child, must be practicing Catholics, if they are married, they must have been married in the Church, practice the faith regularly, and must obtain a sponsor certificate from their home parish. Please choose Godparents with these criteria in mind. Anointing of the Sick: This sacrament is given for those facing serious illness or surgery, and for those of advanced years. If you or a family member is planning to enter the hospital, please see one of the priests following Mass or call the rectory if you would like to receive this sacrament. Please the Respect Life Committee at or fax us at Is Anyone Among You Sick? One of the principle ministries of Jesus and His disciples was the healing of the sick. In the New Testament s Le er of James, 5:14-16, we read: Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters (priests) of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint [him] with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has commi ed any sins, he will be forgiven. The ministry of healing in the Church con nues from the me of Christ to this very day in the sacrament of anoin ng of the infirm. Therefore, when we have serious or chronic illnesses, we can avail ourselves of this gi given to us by Christ. The sacrament should be administered in addi on to the proper medical care of a physician. We might desire a specific kind of healing, and it is good to pray for that inten on, in addi on to adding the phrase from the Our Father, Thy will be done. The sacrament can be administered to a person many mes in their life. Many people are afraid to receive the sacrament of anoin ng of the sick. When we hear someone say they are calling a priest for us, we might get upset and think we are dying, but we should remember that the primary inten on of anoin ng is for healing. Its purpose is to reassure us that Christ is present with us in our struggles, and to give us the healing, strength, courage and peace we desire. With this purpose in mind, we encourage you to consider this sacrament when you are facing a serious and/or chronic illness. If you are scheduled to go to the hospital, you can approach one of the priests a er Mass to be anointed, or you can make an appointment with him for a later me. Most hospitals also have a chaplaincy office, or at least a way to contact a priest to come and administer the sacrament, and they can also provide Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist who can visit you, pray with you, and administer Communion to you when you are hospitalized. At a me of emergency, or when someone is dying, or it seems as though there is a good chance they might die, are other mes to call for a priest. Many are afraid to men on death or the danger of death in front of the person, and it may or may not be the me to men on it, but call for a priest. Too o en people wait un l the person is no longer conscious or able to respond to the COUNTERS NEEDED! Our parish is in need of volunteers to help count weekly collection. Volunteers are scheduled in teams of 4-6 fellow parishioners on Mondays (excluding holidays) once every 6 weeks If you can spare a couple of hours to help please contact the Parish office at and we will call you back with a date & time of our next Training Session. 5 FEBRUARY 10, 2019 FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME GOD S SUMMONS Confronted with God s power and majesty, the first response of the prophet Isaiah was to acknowledge his sinfulness. Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, he said aloud. Likewise, with his empty fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus instruction, Peter fell to his knees and cried out, Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man. Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats then left to follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart. When he heard the Lord say, Whom shall I send? Who will go for us? Isaiah answered, Here I am, send me. We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are reminded of the saving power of the gospel and know in our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in anything else won t lead to anything. What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness? What will it take for you to get off your knees? What will it take for you to bring to dock what is unimportant and to accept your call to be God s messenger? CHOOSING SIDES My great concern is not whether God is on our side; my great concern is to be on God s side.
