4 Various holidays mean different things to different people throughout the world but Thanksgiving is definitely an American only holiday, a time when family and friends come together for reflection, giving thanks and incredibly delicious amounts of food. Many people use this day to express something that they are thankful or grateful for, things like home, a new car, a good job, a healthy family, good friends, good health, children, church, food to eat, sunny days, a smile, kindness, just to name a few. Thanksgiving is a time when we pray for peace, and try to remember and be thankful for something good that came because they were a part of our lives. November will be gone before we know it. Let us make good use of the Thanksgiving Day by spending some time in thoughtfulness, thanksgiving, prayer, reflecting on this thought by John F. Kennedy: As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. Did You Know? Gratitude and expressions of thankfulness have been found to lower stress, improve one s immune system, enhance cardiovascular function, increase energy levels, reduce the likelihood of depression, and even improve one s sleep. Studies show that those who cultivate habits of thankfulness have stronger relationships, report higher levels of happiness and a clearer sense of life purposes, demonstrate greater levels of generosity, and demonstrate more positive coping strategies in confronting both transitions and difficult situations in life. Gratitude, it seems, is good for our health, as well as our soul. Thanksgiving Mass A reminder that this year our parish community will celebrate Thanksgiving Mass on Thanksgiving day with three morning masses. Remember that we will also be collecting non-perishable food items to be sent to the local food pantries. Please remember to check the expiration dates before you bring items for the collection. It s not about cleaning out our cabinets or pantries from old, damaged or out-dated canned goods but about sharing what we have with those who are in need. PLEASE also remember that bizarre and unusual items are not very helpful to those in need and cannot be distributed to the needy. As I take time to give thanks for the many blessings in my life, I want you all to know how grateful I am that you are one of them. A Blessed & Happy Thanksgiving to you. Fr Steve Celebrations of Life s Journey Together we welcome: Wesley William Butler and SaraLou Ford Who were baptized into our Faith & Family. Congratulations to the Parents & Godparents! Our sympathy is extended to the families of: Jeffrey Joseph Stearn, Orest Horhut, Karl Meyers and Blake Seelhorst Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. The Pre- Baptism seminars are held in the St. Albert Chapel at 6:30 p.m. Both Mom and Dad should attend and sponsors are welcome. To schedule a Baptism contact Deacon Mike. 5 The Eucharist Give Thanks This coming week many of us will be busied about preparing a Thanksgiving meal and gathering with family and loved ones to share the gratitude of our hearts for the many blessings we have received. While Thanksgiving Day is celebrated as a national holiday by people of varied backgrounds, as people of faith, our hearts and minds are raised in prayer this day to the God who loves us and who provides every good gift and grace for our lives. Yet, our giving thanks to God for his blessings cannot be limited to just one day. Instead, thanksgiving must be woven into our daily lives. The word Eucharist means to give thanks. As we gather to celebrate God s love for us in the gift of His Son s Body and Blood, we give thanks from the depths of our hearts for the ways he is constantly at work to nourish, strengthen, enliven and inspire us. As Catholics, we enjoy the celebrations of Thanksgiving Day and we are called to work hard each day to form thankful hearts. And may our gratitude to God be expressed in words and deeds that strengthen our communities as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! 7 THE DEACON S CORNER A fellow once went to get advice from the local wiseman. He asked him what is the meaning of life? The wiseman thought and then replied to his client: You will have to come back tomorrow. My computer is down. Everything today relies on our computer (and smart phone). I mentioned once that I even had to text my own grandson, who was sitting in the same room with me, to get his attention. I believe that our personal relationships are really suffering. This may even be contributing to the wave of shootings and mass murders we are seeing. I just returned from a deacon s retreat and it was such a joy to lay down the smart phones and renew friendships. We told jokes and laughed. We shared our ministries and our relationship with God as the Church begins the On Mission effort to improve our faith and grow our churches. And of course, we prayed together. There are many challenges ahead. Yes, the computer will be a valuable tool as we proceed. But only a tool. The true strength and grace to get us through these challenges successfully will come out of our relationships with each other and most importantly our relationship with our Triune God. The stronger these relationships become, the more glorious God s earthly church will be when it is done. ~Deacon Mike In Christ: We Are One, We Are Sent Deacon Tim would like to let the good people of Holy Angels and St. Sylvester s know of two ministries that we have at Holy Apostles Parish. Deacon Tim leads a women's Bible study on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month. We meet at 7 p.m. in the meeting room at the back of St. Albert the Great Church. In addition, we have the Rosary Club which meets the First Friday of every month to pray the Rosary. The Rosary Club meets the First Friday at St. Albert the Great Church at 7 p.m. The next meeting of the Rosary Club is Friday, December 7th. MARCH FOR LIFE~BUS TRIP Deacon Tim is organizing a bus trip for the 2019 March for Life, which will take place on Friday, January 18th in Washington, DC. If you are interested in more information on this bus trip, contact Deacon Tim at deacontim@verizon.net. Since the 1973 Supreme Court cases, Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, which legalized abortion-on-demand in our country, over 60 million lives have been lost to abortion. Ending abortion and promoting a culture of life is why we march each year. Deacon Tim is trying to determine which size bus to reserve for our group. If you are interested in joining us, please contact him. If you cannot join us, please pray for our safety on the trip and for the end to abortion. A simple but correct definition of prayer would be "talking to God". While it is important to talk to God, our "conversation" with God will become more effective and more meaningful if we turn our monologue into a dialogue. "Listening at Prayer" is an excellent book by the late Fr. Benedict Groeschel that shows the way to have a dialogue with God by learning to listen while we pray. God speaks to us all of the time, it is just a matter of us learning how to listen to Him. This book is easy to read, but very powerful in the results that it has generated for several people that I know. Yes, God speaks to us in the silence of our lives, but He also speaks to us in the daily events of our lives. We just need to learn how to listen to Him and for the ways to listen for Him. This is a small book, easy to read, but also easy to implement. For those reasons and how it has successfully taught others how to have a more meaningful prayer life, I give this book Five Beards out of Five Beards. Try reading this book and as Lou Pappan used to say "you gonna like it!" ~Deacon Tim Live Jesus in our hearts..forever! Thanksgiving Prayer God, our Provider, from you comes every good and perfect gift. Hear our grateful praise to you this day. Join us in our joyful feast. When our celebration is done, remind us of your steadfast love and enduring grace. Continue to bless our lives with your mercy and sustain us with your Holy Spirit. Amen.
