4 Page Four December 2, 2018 Advent is a time of Opening Doors. As I stood in two of our churches, St. Sylvester and St. Basil, looking at the beautiful new doors I started to realize how important doors are to us. They can make a big impact on us by creating a first impression to what it may be like may be inside the door(s). I thought about how many of us have been recently entering different doors of different churches for the first time this Advent season. For many of us, we may be just re-entering the same doors we have been for years. Either way, the experience this year can be a beautiful time of re-entering into the loving, caring and forgiving relationship with the very One who loves us. It is a wonderful time to re-enter the door that Christ opened for us, the door to God the Father. Even more, Advent can be a wonderful opportunity for us to welcome others to re-enter the doors to Christ s love as it is shared and experienced through the parish community. This Advent season let us work together to welcome others to Come Home to Christ and re-enter the doors to His love. Let s use Advent to personally reach out to and invite members of our former parishes who left for some reason or members of our families who have drifted away not feeling as though they are important. Reach out to neighbors or friends who could use a personal invitation to celebrate God s loving gift of His Son born on Christmas. Advent can also be a good time for us to become more aware of the inner door to our hearts. Do we open them to others or just lock them for good. When we open the door and welcome others into our lives, we open the door and welcome Emmanuel, God-with-us. As I thought about this I began to remember the many people I have visited throughout my priesthood. I was always intrigued by the way people responded to my knocking at their doors inviting me in, if I was invited in at all. I have to say that most times there was a warm and cheerful greeting at the door. Sometimes the person inside would simply shout Who is it and what do you want. Some didn t bother to answer the door, peeking out the window or peep-hole until I left. Sometimes people would rush me in and rush me right back out. Some would seem very uncomfortable with my being there as if I were a spy or an intruder interrupting their lives. Either way, it made me think of how I respond to the knocking at my door, or entering my space so-tospeak, especially if is Jesus knocking. Since this is our first Advent season together as The Catholic Community of South Pittsburgh what a great opportunity to think about how we respond to the people outside of the doors to our parish and our church or even our personal space. Do we greet them with cheerful warmth and invite them to come through the door or do we respond to them with a grunt, Who are you and Why are you here? Are we greeting with warm hearts or are we turning the deadbolt to keep them out? What keeps us from recognizing that someone may be waiting for our warm welcome through the door? What if it is Jesus Christ? Each of us is an innkeeper who decides if there is room for Jesus! ~ Neal A. Maxwell Fr Steve Celebrations of Life s Journey Together we welcome: Lilanna Rose Rethage, Mia Grace Napolitano Who were baptized into our Faith & Family. Congratulations to the Parents & Godparents! 7 The Catholic Community of South Pittsburgh THE DEACON S CORNER A scripture presented today in the Liturgy of the Hours is Jeremiah 15:16 which reads, When I found your words, I devoured them; your words were my job, the happiness of my heart, Because I bear your name, LORD, God of hosts. It brought me back to my Thanksgiving day meal and all those favorite dishes which we only prepare once or twice a year. We have a much more intense hunger for these things than regular dishes. When we say that we devoured a book, we mean we couldn't put it down. We had to read it completely at one sitting. This is the attitude and desire we should have for God s word. We should have a deep hunger for his word. The other point is that we become what we eat. All the cells and muscles in our body absorb what we eat. (Looking in the mirror this morning I think I saw where all that dressing, sweet potatoes and pie went). If we truly devour the Word of God, we become more and more like Him every day. When we absorb his Word, it becomes part of our very being; our mind, our heart, and our soul. This should be our goal and our effort every day of our lives. So, devour God s Word with renewed hunger and desire for understanding His will in our lives. Absorb desire for understanding His will in our lives. Absorb each word for the increased power and growth of your faith. Let God s words be the joy and happiness of your heart every day of your life. ~Deacon Mike In Christ: We Are One, We Are Sent REMINDER... Ladies of Charity. Page Seven DEACON TIM S BOOK & MOVIE REVIEW.. This week's movie is one that can be enjoyed by your entire family - children and adults. Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey is a 1993 remake of the 1963 film The Incredible Journey. The film involves three pets, an old Golden Retriever named Shadow (voiced by Don Ameche), a cat named Sassy (voiced by Sally Field) and Chance, an immature Bulldog (voiced by Michael J Fox). The film is narrated by the young dog Chance and seen through his eyes. The film centers around the three pets and what they chose to endure to be reunited with their owners. As the title indicates, it is an incredible and rough journey. The film also has other positive themes such as bonding, loyalty and respecting the wisdom of elders. I am not embarrassed to tell you that I remember seeing this movie in the theaters with my wife, and then watching it over and over (and over) when our kids were young. Whether you love pets or not, you will find yourself enjoying this movie. I gladly give this movie Five Beards out of Five Beards for the timeless tale that it tells and the warm feelings that it provides for everyone. If you have never seen this movie, take a chance, pun intended, and watch it. You will thank me! ~Deacon Tim Live Jesus in our hearts.forever! ST. Bolton, which legalized abortion-on-demand in our country, over 60 million lives have been lost to abortion. Ending abortion and promoting a culture of life is why we march each year. Deacon Tim is trying to determine which size bus to reserve for our group. If you are interested in joining us, please contact him. If you cannot join us, please pray for our safety on the trip and for the end to abortion. "Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer
