2 PAGE 2 FROM THE PASTOR ASTOR: My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Instead of my usual letter to you, I invited one of our Seminarians, Matthew Weaver, to write to you as we approach the Immaculate Conception. May God s Blessings be Yours this Week Father Ireland Dear Faithful of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, By the grace of Almighty God and by the benign intercession of the ever-virgin Mary, I am humbled and honored to have been asked by our pastor, Father Ireland, to greet you all amidst this blessed season of Advent. Each year of grace, through her Sacred Liturgy, Holy Mother Church presents to us this time of joyful penance so as to properly prepare our hearts for the joys of Christmastide and the coming of the Holy Infant King. However, just as a wise mother must sometimes coax her children with sweets to encourage their patience and fortitude during the course of a long journey, so too does the supreme maternity of holy Church condescend to our spiritual infirmities amidst the trials of life by providing us with the joyful feast of the Immaculate Conception. Every 8 December, just two weeks before the glorious celebration of His virgin birth, our sovereign Lord urges us through the voice of His divine Spouse, the Church, to draw more closely to our most blessed Lady, Mary Immaculate; for, where else but in the arms of His holy Mother Mary may we expect to find the Santo Bambino when He shall come? From her Fiat was He conceived of the Holy Ghost. From her inviolate womb was He brought forth. From her Immaculate Heart was the most Sacred Heart delivered to the world! Dear faithful, just as it was the Immaculate Heart that provided life to the Sacred Heart of the holy Infant Jesus that we may receive the eternal joys of heaven, so too by consecrating our hearts to hers on this holy day, vigor and joy shall flourish in our lives, in our families, and in our very parish dedicated to the same Sacred Heart. Therefore, I must entreat you: turn not away from the innumerable graces being offered to you on this most holy feast! All of your worries, all of your fears, all of your troubles no matter how large you have only to go to our Mother and hold out these afflictions to her, and she will present you with the healing balm of Divine Charity, of which her Heart has been christened the abundant vessel. If you are depressed, if you are faint of heart, if you are discouraged, run to our Mother, for she has crushed the head of Satan with her foot and will triumph over all evil. Prepare your hearts for the coming of Christ; make strait the way of the Lord. For this, our Lady has always recommended and encouraged the recitation of the holy Rosary, and so I must do the same. It is the prayer of the Gospels; it is the prayer of perseverance. If you are struggling with a particular sin perhaps impurity or anger pray the Rosary with devotion this Advent. You will see; either you will give up the sin, or you will give up the Rosary. This Wednesday, 8 December, I invite you, as holy Mother Church justly requests, to come to the holy Sacrifice of the Mass, to adore our Lord in the way He Himself has commanded, and to give honor to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. If you wish to be near our holy Infant King this Christmas, give your hearts over to her loving care, and she will do the rest. Wednesday, December 8, is a Holy Day of Obligation Masses will be celebrated on Wednesday, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, at 6:45 and 8:45 a.m. ~ 12:10 and 7 p.m. Assuring you all of my continued prayers this Advent, while confiding your intentions to the benevolent maternity of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, I remain, There will be a vigil Mass for the Holy Day at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 7. Very truly yours in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ our King, Matthew Weaver
3 DECEMBER 5, 2010 PAGE 3 FROM THE DEACON EACON S DESK BY DEACON DAVE CHORDAS First, let me thank everyone who gave food and money to help those in our community this past Thanksgiving. I would list all those who gave cash donations, but many were given without a name. We still have supplies for the Christmas season as it fast approaches. Donations are still gladly accepted. Would you help us identify those of our parish who are in need of food or other material necessities. Please call the Parish Office ( ) and ask for extension 25. Leave a detailed message including name, address and phone number of those in need. If you prefer, you may leave a note for me at the Parish Office or place it in an envelope to my attention and drop it in the collection basket. If prayers are what you need, then contact Tricia Brunton at the Caring Connection ((216, ) or her at tbrunton24@yahoo.com. Pray-ers are standing by ready to pray on your behalf. If it s work, then let me know through the St. Joseph Works Program. Several parishioners have obtained employment through this program already. Two families have come forward asking to be Secret Santas for families with children for whom they can buy presents this year. If your family would like to be a recipient of this generosity, please call me at the Parish Office. I can assure you that I will protect your anonymity. For those who are able, please consider inviting someone who you know is alone this Christmas over to your home for dinner sometime during the Christmas season. Perhaps you have time to visit a nursing home or hospice, bringing the gift of your presence and your love. The sight of the Nativity Scene, lit up in front of a house, is such a beautiful message of Christmas to all who pass by saying, We believe Christ should stay in Christmas. Be proud you are a Catholic. When someone says, Happy Holidays, respond Merry Christmas. Have a Blessed & Joyful Christmas Blessing of the Bambinelli Next Sunday, December 12, is the Third Sunday of Advent, also called Gaudete Sunday. On this day in Rome, the Pope invites all of the children to bring statues of the baby Jesus (the Bambinelli) from their nativity scenes to St. Peter s Square to be blessed. We invite all the children of the parish to bring their baby Jesus statues to Mass next Sunday. During the Mass, Father will ask the children to come forward with their statues for the Blessing of the Bambinelli. The statues may then be placed in the family nativity scenes at home on Christmas. It is our hope that this will help the children to appreciate the true meaning of Christmas: the gift of Our Blessed Lord Himself, the greatest gift of all. 4 PAGE 4 The Women s Guild invites you to participate in its annual Giving Tree event which provides Christmas gifts for less fortunate children in our diocese. The tree, which is decorated with colorful gift tags for children from infants to teens, is on display near the Holy Family Shrine in the front of the church until Sunday, December 12. Please take a tag, purchase a gift, wrap it, attach the tag securely to the package, and place it under the tree NO LATER THAN SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12. This will permit sufficient time for the gifts to be delivered before Christmas. As in previous years, gifts will be sent to the Fatima Family Center where the staff will distribute the gifts according to the wish lists that have been submitted to them. NOTE: IF YOU ARE GIVING A CLOTHING ITEM, PLEASE MARK THE SIZE ON THE TAG. Again this year we will also collect your donations of NEW baby items (bottles, sleepers, onesies, sheets, receiving blankets, diapers, etc.) which will be delivered to Birthright, Inc., where they will be distributed to needy pregnant women to help them prepare for the births of their babies. New or gently used maternity tops (any size) are also needed. These items must be UNWRAPPED and placed in the cradle near the tree. Your generosity in past years has been truly appreciated. 5 DECEMBER 5, 2010 PAGE 5 REFLECTING ON THE SCRIPTURES CRIPTURES Second Sunday of Advent Has anyone ever called you out? When I lived in the central city of a large metropolitan area, calling someone out in the neighborhood was a commonplace occurrence. Large porches and the lack of air-conditioning meant that folks would often spend summer afternoons and evenings sitting out front. Children would play together, while young teens would ride their bikes up and down the street. Block activities meant that everyone knew one another, and if anyone saw something happening in the alley behind the houses, it was certain that someone's momma would be told about it. On a warm summer night, even though you were ten houses away from your own home, you could be sure that if you were doing something wrong, whoever was sitting up on the porch would call you out right then and there. In today's Gospel, John the Baptist had no hesitation about calling out the Pharisees and the Sadducees. From his perspective, they were coming out to take part in a ritual cleansing-an important rite of Judaism in the time of Jesus-without having the proper disposition of repentance and conversion. John's warning to them does not make for comfortable reading, even today. As we go about all the hustle and bustle of preparation for Christmas, we might lose sight of the fact that Advent is also a time of preparation for our final end. Just like teens don't like being called out when they're doing something wrong, we don't like to think that much about the end of our lives. And it's even harder to do so in this busy season. But Advent celebrates Christ's coming: his coming in time at Bethlehem; his coming to each individual Christian in the fullness of one's life; and his coming at the end of time. Maybe take a little time this week to reflect on your readiness for Christ, so that you're not called out at the end Liturgical Publications Inc EEK READINGS FOR THE WEEK Sunday: Is 11:1-10/Rom 15:4-9/Mt 3:1-12 Monday: Is 35:1-10/Lk 5:17-26 Tuesday: Is 40:1-11/Mt 18:12-14 Wednesday: Gn 3:9-15, 20/Eph 1:3-6, 11-12/Lk 1:26-38 Thursday: Is 41:13-20/Mt 11:11-15 Friday: Is 48:17-19/Mt 11:16-19 Saturday: Sir 48:1-4, 9-11/Mt 17:9a, /Lk 1:26-38 Next Sunday: Is 35:1-6a, 10/Jas 5:7-10/Mt 11:2-11 MASS INTENTIONS NTENTIONS Monday, December 6, 2010 Advent Weekday Optional: St. Nicholas, bishop 6:45 a.m. Deceased Members of the Bledsoe & Rini Families 12 :10 p.m. Maria & Nino Pitrelli Tuesday, December 7, 2010 St. Ambrose, bishop and doctor of the Church 6:45 a.m. William Grad (Anniversary) 12:10 p.m. Joan Millett 7 p.m. Mary Mindy Gromek Wednesday, December 8, 2010 The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary 6:45 a.m. John Phillip Cermak 8:45 a.m. Antonio & Ida DiFranco 12:10 p.m. Michael Millett (Anniversary) 7:00 p.m. Dennis Latini Thursday, December 9, 2010 Advent Weekday Optional: St. Juan Diego, hermit 6:45 a.m. Edward & Grace Damm 12:10 p.m. Deceased Members of the Carmen, Nazzarine and DiTurno Families Friday, December 10, 2010 Advent Weekday 6:45 a.m. Louise Wolfe 12:10 p.m. Gianna Gabrielle Holmes Saturday, December 11, 2010 Optional: St. Damasus I, pope Advent Weekday 6:45 a.m. Frances Fitzgerald 4:00 p.m. Parishioners of Sacred Heart of Jesus Sunday, December 12, 2010 Third Sunday of Advent 8:00 a.m. Living & Deceased Members of the Herbst and Chimento Families 10:00 a.m. Ann Assing 11:30 a.m. Mary Kovach 5:00 p.m. George & Beatrice Suchy Rest In Peace Mildred Martinich who died this week and for her family during their time of grief. Our students are eagerly working on many Advent/Christmas activities and lessons. The students are going to confession as they prepare their hearts this Advent season. Some students are opening their hearts through song. Student Council members will be singing Christmas carols to the residents at Homewood. Students in Grades 2 and 4 will perform a concert for the school and parents on December 9. Many of our students are opening their hearts through charity. We are contributing to the Parish Giving Tree with donations of clothing and toys. The generosity displayed by these students is overwhelming. My sincere thanks to school parents for your direction and guidance with your children. Your Christian upbringing is evident in the way they respond to our various service/charitable drives. December can be hectic enough, so I appreciate what you do at home. Keep this thought in mind from Luke 10:40-42: In the rush of life, may you always find time and space for the people and activities that refresh your soul. May what seems most urgent never distract you from what is most important. Come and See the New LYCEUM SCHOOL, now located on the grounds of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Tabor House.
