3 November 15, Page 3 GETTING THROUGH THE TOUGH TIMES It s going to get worse before it gets better is a phrase that prepares us to buckle up for a rough ride. We know that enduring a difficult time will require some strenuous physical or emotional energy on our part before we experience the calm of normality. Our past experience tells us that we can endure the difficult pressure better when we know how long it will last and if we know that something better awaits us. Getting through the tough times while holding to the promise that awaits us is the message of this weekend s readings. They point toward the promises of God s kingdom that will come after the maelstroms and chaos of this world. ANNOUNCEMENT Please remember to keep ST. BARBARA CHURCH in your will and living trust.. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Eastern Christians developed very different traditions for confessing sin. They see the priest as a witness to God s action, a physician, if you will, rather than a judge. A person confesses sin to God while standing in front of an icon of Jesus, face to face. Without a grill, in the full light of day, near a table with an open Gospel book, the penitent asks the Lord for mercy. A priest standing to the side might offer counsel and confirm God s gift of forgiveness. Rather than list sins and offenses, an Eastern Christian is more likely to speak of a disposition of heart toward God and neighbor, and the desire to forgive those who have wronged them. Remarkably, although only a priest can pronounce the prayers of forgiveness, lay people, including married men and women, single Christians, monks, and nuns, may witness the confession. This is akin to the ancient Celtic practice of a soul friend as a spiritual mentor. Bishops may bless anyone with sufficient theological knowledge and discretion to do this. Eastern Catholics in the United States have largely drifted away from this tradition and toward Latin Rite customs such as confessional screens, set formulas and prayers, and penances. Today, in the interest of preserving the authentic tradition of the Eastern Church, there is a move to restore the older form. 5 Suy Niệm: November 15, Page 5 COÄNG ÑOAØN THAÙNH GIUSE Phúc Âm: Mc 13, "Người sẽ quy tụ những người được tuyển chọn từ khắp bốn phương trời". Trong ngày sau hết, ngày Con Người đến trong vinh quang đầy quyền năng. Ngày Ðức Giêsu trở lại để đưa nhân loại chúng ta về cùng Thiên Chúa. Ngài đến triệu tập những người được tuyển chọn từ khắp muôn nơi. Ðể cho họ được hưởng hạnh phúc vĩnh viễn bên Ngài. Những ai là người được tuyển chọn? Ai sẽ được cứu? Tin Mừng Ga 3,16 quả quyết: "Thiên Chúa yêu thế gian đến nỗi đã ban Con Một, để ai tin vào Con của Người, thì khỏi phải chết, nhưng được sống muôn đời". Vì thế, tất cả chúng ta đều được cứu, nếu chúng ta muốn. Nếu muốn thì hãy tin vào Ðức Giêsu Con của Thiên Chúa. Cầu Nguyện: Lạy Cha, chúng con thường sợ hãi khi nghĩ đến ngày phán xét. Chúng con hay sợ bị phạt trong hỏa ngục. Một hình ảnh lệch lạc khi nghĩ đến Cha uy nghi, nghiêm khắc làm chúng con khiếp sợ. Thế nhưng Kinh Thánh đã mạc khải cho chúng con biết: Còn gì quý hơn Con Một của Cha? Thế mà Cha đã ban cho chúng con, thì Cha còn tiếc gì với chúng con nữa? Cha yêu thương chúng con, không phải Cha phạt chúng con. Nhưng đúng hơn, chúng con đã lạm dụng tự do để chọn cho mình nỗi bất hạnh. Một câu hỏi quyết định, vì cuộc đời chúng ta là chính yếu. Thánh Máccô cho các độc giả, là chúng ta, một không gian để suy nghĩ: Sáp nhập cuộc khổ nạn của Đức Kitô vào đời sống chúng ta là gì? Nó sẽ đưa đến cho chúng ta nghệ thuật sống nào? Tin mừng sẽ cho chúng ta một câu trả lời: Việc Chúa đến đang xảy ra trong từng giây phút. Tin vào điều đó sẽ đưa chúng ta vào một lối sống trong thế giới này. Thiên Chúa cư ngụ trong khi thời gian cứ trôi đi. Sự hiện diện của Người là một lời hứa, một nguồn suối luôn được dâng hiến. Thời gian thuận tiện, chính là hôm nay. Không cần phải chờ đợi những dấu hiệu của tình tứ. Nhưng luôn hiện diện trong dòng thời gian, vì chẳng có thời gian nào khác, thế giới nào khác, để gặp được Đức Chúa của vinh quang. Durante siglos los seres humanos han estudiado las estrellas, buscado señales y escudriñando la Sagrada Escritura para así descubrir cuándo el mundo llegará a su final. Los discípulos de Cristo también quieren saber eso mismo: Dinos cuándo sucederá la gran destrucción y cuál será la señal de que ya están por cumplirse todas estas cosas (Marcos 13:3). Jesús responde con varios signos de los tiempos: guerras, terremotos, hambre, persecuciones, etcétera. Como bien sabemos, estas cosas suceden en cada generación. A fin de cuentas, Jesús dice que ni los ángeles, ni él mismo saben el día o la hora del fin del mundo (Mateo 24:36), por tal motivo, hay que estar siempre en vela, haciendo la voluntad de Dios. Si estamos obrando el bien y promoviendo el Evangelio de Cristo, no importa que se acabe el mundo. A fin de cuentas, eso es lo que anhelamos y esperamos, para que el Reino de Dios renueve la faz de la tierra. Parents are invited to come to the Hall at 4:00pm for a welcome home reception and also attend the 5:30pm Youth Mass with their children. Retreat is a life changing event. However, we have students with financial needs and would not be able to attend a weekend retreat without your help. Cheerleaders Raise Funds for Road to National Title St. Barbara Parish Hall was the site of a Western Day fundraiser for the Varsity and Jr. Varsity Cheerleaders. A delicious dinner of barbeque pork and chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, beans, and an array of desserts and candies. The cheerleaders showed off their Western dancing skills. Guests joined in line dancing. All proceeds are used toward cheerleading expenses and competitions. We wish the squads good luck as they cheer their way to a National Championship Title!
